Model Farms High School NEWSLETTER ISSUE 12 Term 2 – Week 3 Monday 7 May 2012 Gooden Drive, Baulkham Hills Telephone: (02) 9624 3133 Facsimile: (02) 9838 8407 Email: [email protected] PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE… Student Successes Jake Bohan continues his run of success with his baseball. Jake has been selected to join as a member of the CHS Baseball team and will head off now to play in Adelaide in the nationals. We hope his winning streak continues. Good luck Jake. The Year 10 Dance elective class has been selected to participate in the Sydney West Dance Festival. This is a great achievement as over 100 Primary and High schools auditioned and only 50 were chosen to perform. The Sydney West Dance festival is a fabulous showcase of the talent to be found in NSW public schools. Students will be performing on Wednesday 6 th June in the Matinee concert and again that same night. NAPLAN The NAPLAN tests will take place on the 15 th , 16 th and 17 th of this month for students in Years 7 & 9. As usual, Year 7 tests will be conducted in the old hall while Year 9 will be held in the English classrooms. Most students should be used to NAPLAN testing by now but if for any reason your child is stressed about sitting for them please contact the school and speak to a Year Adviser or Deputy Principal and we can ensure that we allay any fears they may have. I have no doubt that our students will perform as well if not better than they have in the past and look forward to the positive results they have achieved previously. Prank phone calls Some parents have reported receiving phone calls late at night from a person claiming to be either the Deputy Principal or one of the teachers from the school. This person usually is abusive and complains about their child at school. On occasions they have rung several times and become increasingly annoying. Please know that no one from the school would ring very late at night and certainly not be abusive. I strongly encourage any person who receives such calls to report it to the police, who are already aware of the spate of calls made over the last few weeks and are taking the matter very seriously. Once the person is identified, if it is a student from the school they will be dealt with in accordance with the DEC suspension policy and the school’s discipline policy. If anyone has information about this please call the school and either speak to me or Mr Anderson. Alternatively ring the local police station. P&C Trivia Night Don’t forget the Trivia night is on Saturday evening in the school hall. The P&C has been working very hard organising this event. Our students and school benefit so much for the contributions made by the P&C and they deserve your support. It should be another great night of challenging questions and fun activities. It’s not too late to get your table organised so, see you all there.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE (Cont.)… UWS Mentoring Program We have been fortunate enough to link with UWS in the provision of a mentoring program for boys and girls at the school. Next week we will have 3 university students with us, each of them in the last semester of their Master of Teaching degree, for the next few months and they will work with a number of our students engaging them in enhancing literacy and numeracy as well as a personal interest project. This mentoring program has worked well in my previous schools and it provides an opportunity for both mentor and mentee to develop a relationship over time and enhance their learning experiences and time at school. FROM THE DEPUTY … Tax rebate for school items: The Education Tax Refund provides up to 50 per cent back on a range of children's education expenses. In the 2011-12 tax year, you could claim up to $409 for primary students and $818 for secondary students. The Education Tax Refund now includes school-approved uniforms, purchased from 1 July 2011, so items of clothing including hats, footwear and sports uniforms approved by a school as its uniform may be claimed from 1 July 2012. Keep your receipts for school uniforms and other education-related purchases so you can claim them at tax time. You will need them to calculate your refund and you may need to show them as proof of purchase. The website www.educationtaxrefund.gov.au will help you decide if you are eligible and explains what you can claim and how to claim. Privacy Awareness Week: 27 April – 5 May 2012: Privacy Awareness Week is a chance to remind your children to protect their personal details and information, especially online. Australians lead the world when it comes to average monthly social media use and we share many details of our lives online. As a parent, you can help your child behave in safe and smart ways to minimise the risks of their online activity. To ensure that your kids are protected from cyber bullying, unwanted attention or privacy breaches, you can:

remind them not to share their usernames and passwords with anyone

go through the privacy settings of social networking sites with them to make sure they are only sharing their personal information with their friends

talk to them about the danger of identity theft and the permanence of online sharing. For more information on how to educate your children about protecting their privacy online and how to avoid being a victim of identity theft or even how to stop junk mail, go to: http://www.privacyawarenessweek.org/youth.html Pre-loved jumpers: If you have discovered that your son/daughter has outgrown their jumper (or the dryer has done its job too well) please send the jumper to me. The knitted jumpers are in high demand and I am happy to be the “intermediary” in the allocation process.

    This week’s news

Half Yearly Exams: Term 2 is our Half Yearly Exam time for Years 7 to 10. Please make sure that your student is aware that

they need to be preparing for their examinations during their home study time.

    Year Paper 1 Paper 2

    7 Tuesday 8th

    May Thursday 10th

    May

9 Week 5 – dates to be advised

10 Week 6 – dates to be advised

Please make sure that your students bring their correct equipment to the examinations. Both of the Year 7

Half Yearly Examinations will be done as non-calculator examinations, so no calculators will be allowed.

Year 9 and 10 will have one non-calculator examination and one calculator examination.

    Calculators:

Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-82AU is sold at the uniform shop

for $35. Students need this calculator from Year 7. It is vital for their progress that students are familiar

with their calculator and know how to use the different functions.

    Checking Emails:

All students from Year 7 to Year 12 have their own Department of Education email address.

Teachers use emails to send assignments and other information to their students. Students

must regularly check their emails via the DET Portal. Please remind your student to check

their emails. If you don’t have a home computer, there are computers in the school library

that students can use to access the DET Portal.

    Maths Competition:

Notes have been handed out for this year’s Australian Mathematic Trust Mathematics Competition. It is to

    be held on 2nd

August this year. Notes must be completed and returned to the school with payment by 10th

May. Should your child not receive a note and they want to do the test, they can collect a note from the

    Mathematics Staffroom.

    Mathletics:

Don’t forget that all of our students from Year 7 to Year 10 have now received their passwords for

Mathletics. In addition to using Mathletics for homework and class work, Mathletics is a most useful

resource for preparation for NAPLAN and the Half Yearly Examinations. Please encourage your student to

show you the website. You can also encourage your student to compete with other students from all over

the world online. Thanks again to our P&C for their generous financial support of Mathletics in our school. Free After School Maths Tuition

Free Maths tuition is provided by the Mathematics faculty every Thursday from 3pm to 4pm. Students from

Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 can go to room 8-07 and Years 11 and 12 to room 8-06. It is fully supervised by the

    Mathematics Faculty.
