Introduction

The Academic Librarian of this century must be more dynamic.

Their environment has shifted from one that relied heavily on print sources to electronic formats.

Because of these changes in the academic environment, the librarian must also change his or her focus, become current, and remain current with the information field.

Reasons for IT Orientation Course

o Obtain increased operational efficiencies

o Improve the quality, speed and effectiveness of services

o Improve access to remote users and other stakeholders

o Improve access to resources on other networks and systems, including the Web

o Provide new services not hitherto possible

Reasons for IT Orientation Course

Improve the management of their physical and financial resources

Facilitate wider access to information for their clients

Facilitate wider dissemination of their information products and services

Enable their participation in resource-sharing library networks, and

Enable rapid communication with other libraries (including outreach libraries) and professional peers.

IT Orientation Course

To create Internet literate people from amongst new entrants as well as in-service Librarians and to make them familiar with use of software tools in Library automation, Networking and Digitization. Acquisition of knowledge is a two-way process between the librarians and the readers and, therefore, collectively they must advance the frontiers of knowledge.

The training will be totally practical based and all the components of the library automation, networking and digitization are to be covered.

Objectives of IT Orientation Courseto train the librarians in the advanced skills of information gathering, processing, organization, digitization and retrieval;

to provide the librarians through understanding of IT applications in information environment including Web based Library Services, library networks and communication systems ;

to enumerate the applications of CD-ROMs/DVDs to Library and Information Centres;

to discuss the important CD-ROM/DVD products & Databases;

Objectives of IT Orientation Course

to illustrate the querying and browsing facilities of OPACS;to train the librarians in the better searching information in CD-ROM Databases, e-zines, online databases and Internet;

to explain the importance of bibliographic standards, formats, information retrieval protocols and record structures; and

to encourage librarians to participate and organize the IT based seminars, symposia, workshops, etc.

Eligibility Criteria

Asstt. Librarians, Dy.Librarians, University Librarians (Universities) and College Librarians (Colleges) with the minimum basic pay Rs.8,000/- and above.Competency in Computer applicationsAge: below 50 yearsSelection: All India basis and preference will be given to those having adequate computer applications knowledge

Grading for Participants

Assess the participants on the basis of live projects, weekly seminar presentations, overall practical tests, and Innovative & creative works. The grades assigned to the participants by external experts from Library and Information Science.

The grading should be as follows: A: 75 per cent and above B: 60 per cent to less than 75%C: 50 per cent to less than 60 per centD: Below 50 per cent

Grading for Participants

Those librarians who get D grades are required to repeat the IT Orientation Course after a gap of one year without financial commitment to UGC-ASC

The total marks are to be fixed at 100 and the division of marks as follows:

Live Project – 30 Marks, Weekly Seminar Presentations – 40 Marks, (4 Weeks * 10 Marks)Overall practical tests – 20 Marks, andInnovative & Creative works – 10 Marks

In Closing …librarians will need to acquire more perspectives and new competencies. gain the knowledge must learn to act - to apply that knowledge in different situations. They also need to prepare themselves the complex challenges of the future by dealing with rapid and substantive changes, managing the diversity of people and views, and thinking globally. In addition, they need to focus on both the internal and external variables that affect libraries.

In Closing…It is desired that this project presentation need not have any conclusion,as there should not be an end to the creativity of a Librarian and all of these challenges must be at the forefront of our minds as we work to create web based library services for the future.IT Orientation Course of UGC- ASC for Librarians is the pathway to the future
