Dear Sally (1)

Thanks for your letter. (2) It sounds like you had a great

summer. I really enjoyed the holidays too, but they

weren't long enough! (3) (4)

As soon as school broke up I went off to Spain with my

parents. We stayed in a lovely little village on the north

coast and spent loads of time on the beach or walking in

the mountains. (a)

When I came back (:) I spent three works working in a

cafe. At first I was in the kitchen, washing up - I hated

that. But after a while the boss let me take orders and

serve customers. That was much more fun, and I got

some good tips too. In the final week of the holiday I

went and stayed with my cousins. We just lazed around

and spent most of the time watching DVDs' Then it was

back to school. (4)

Anyway I'd (3) better stop here as I've got quite a lot of

homework to get through before tomorrow' (4)

How's school going? Write again soon with more news'

Love (5)

I recentlV read The phantom of the Opera, a

I novel written in 1910 by Gaston Leroux. ltI has been adapted a number of t imes for

the cinema and also made into an immenservsuccessful musical . ( I ) (4)

I t 's set in Paris and is the story of Er ik ( the'phantom'), a menacing f igure who l ives hidden

away in the basement of the opera house. He is in love with Christ ine, an opera singer, but she in turn loves a young ar istocrat cal ledRaoul. (3) The plot is very intricate with tots oftwists and turns, which keep the reader turningthe pages. (2) (4)

My main cr i t ic ism of the book is thecharacter isat ion. (2) The characters areunmemorable and rather shal low. l t is of tendif f icul t to understand why they do certainthings, for example, (6) when Christ ine choosesto have a conversation with Raoul on the roofof the opera house. (4)

To sum up, I enjoyed this ,gothic' horrorstory despite the weaknesses in thecharacter isat ion. However, I 'd only recommendit to people who real ly enjoy horror or ghoststor ies. (4) (5)

Part 2 An articleYou have seen this announcement in a magazine.

We are offering a prize for thebest art ic le with the t i i le:

Wri te an arr ic le of 120-180 words.

A town that I really likeHave you ever visited the south west of England?(1) | was brought up there, in a town calledKingsbury. and in my opinion you couldn't choosea better place to live or just to visit. (3)

Kingsbury is only a couple miles from the coasr, where you can find lots of fantastic beaches. Thesurrounding countryside is very beautiful and thereare some wild, woodland areas nearby, ideal forwalking and other outdoor activities. (3)

The town itself is very pretty, with narrow windingstreets and lots of interesting old buildings. Thereare quite a few good caf6s and restaurants anothe shops are excellent. Every weekend there's afarmers' market when you can fresh local mearand vegetables. (3)

Finally, the pace of life is slower than in the city.People are fr iendly and aren' t always in a hurry. They have more time to stop and chat with you. (3)

So, whatever you're looking for in a small town- attractive buildings, great shops, nice places toeat and dr ink, good leisure faci l i t ies - Kingsburyhas them a l l . (3 ) (4 )

Part 2 A reportThe college where you study wants to raise some money to buynew books and DVDs for the library. The principal has asked youto write report recommending the best way to raise the money.

Write a report of 120-180 words.

The purpose of this report is to consider differentways of raising money to pay for new books andDVDs for the school library, and to recommend thebest course of action. (1)

Prize draw rzrOne idea is (5) to sel l numbered t ickets and offeror izes. Students and teachers could be asked (5)

to br ing in unwanted i tems that would be sui tableas pr izes, and the school could also approach (5)local shops and restaurants who might be wi l l ing tocontribute orizes.

Sponsored run (z)Another possibi l i ty would be (5) to organise asponsored run around the local park. Studentscould ask their f r iends and family to give a certainamount for every mi le they complete.

My recommendation tzlI recommend that we organise a sponsored run.Although the advantage of offering prizes is that itwould be easier to organise, the plan might come tonothing (5) i f we are unable to f ind enough suitableprizes or sel l enough t ickets. A sponsored run, onthe other hand, is l ikely to raise more money andwould have the added benefit of involving more ofthe students and staff. (6)

Start with an introduction setting outthe aim of the report.

Organise the information into sections.Use headings if appropriate.

You can use numbered or bullet points.

Use fairly formal language.

Express opinions impersonally.

Write an essav of 120-180 words.

owadays many homes have more than one

television, and some chi ldren even have a TV

in their bedrooms. I t is not surprising, then,

that stat ist ics show that watching television is the most

popular lersure activi ty for the majori ty of chi ldren. (1)

Therc is no doubt that chi ldren need t ime to relax after

school. and most chi ldren's programmes are certainly

verv e ntertaining. Furthermote, (2) some television

programmes. especial ly documentaries and news

programmes. are educational and informative, and can
