General Information

Models in the Mountains 2017 is a model horse enthusiast’s gathering in the Angeles National Forest at Chilao School, a 2,000 square foot vintage 1963 school house owned by the non profit association Redbird.

We are located in Chilao Campground off of Highway 2, 26 miles back in the Angeles National Forest from the intersection of the 210 Freeway and Angeles Crest Highway (2) in La Canada Flintridge. We are located in the heart of the Angeles National Forest, and two miles from the famous Newcomb’s Ranch Bar and Restaurant.

To reach Chilao School, DO NOT USE GOOGLE or GPS. Follow written directions, and look for signs on the road. From the Antelope Valley/14 freeway, exit Angeles Forest Highway. Proceed over the top of the mountain and down into a valley past Mill Creek campground. Turn left onto Upper Big Tujunga Canyon (look for either a Redbird or Models in the Mountains sign). Take Upper Big Tujunga Canyon for 9 miles to Angeles Crest Highway. Turn left. Proceed 6 more miles to Chilao Road/Chilao Campground. Follow signs through campground to Chilao School. From the Los Angeles/San Fernando Valley area, take the 210 freeway to Angeles Crest Highway/Highway 2 exit. Turn north, up hill, away from the city, toward the mountains. If you immediately come to

Chilao - Location Details

Chilao is located in the heart of the Angeles National Forest at an elevation of 5,200 feet. It is in a transition zone of hardwood and conifer forest, and high desert chaparral.

In October 2014 President Obama created the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument within the forest. Chilao sits roughly in the center of the new National Monument designation.

The weather, once upon a time and not so long ago, could be more or less predicted. That is no longer the case. Generally speaking, June is temperate and lovely, with lows above 40 and highs below 80.

There is no cell phone reception in Chilao. We do have internet (note the words “high speed” were not included) at the caretaker residence, and guests will be given the access code. We would encourage you to make sure your loved ones know that you can be reached via email or social media so they don’t panic if they cannot reach you by phone. At this time there is no land line telephone at the school, although that may change in the coming months.

You are welcome to camp free of charge on the property. There are several areas suitable for setting up tents, numerous places to park, and if you have a very large motorhome, there are several locations within a few hundred yards of school where you can park. We have a magnetic roller (it picks up nails and other metal objects that could injure tires) and we recommend using it to make sure these off-site spots are free of metal debris before you park. There is one electrical outlet behind the school; it will not be able to provide enough juice for a whole herd of recreational vehicles, but it can be used for light-draw appliances such as lighting.

Chilao is home to a number of campgrounds and day use areas, the USFS Chilao Visitors Center, the famous Newcomb’s Ranch Bar and Restaurant, the fire station where the very first Hotshot Crew evolved, and Chilao School.

Chilao has seen several eras of human habitation. It was a favorite place to gather in the summer for five regional Native American tribes until the late 1700s. At that time, native people were rounded up and taken to missions, where many of them died. (Toypurina was a Tongva—Gabrieliño Native American medicine woman who opposed the rule of colonization by Spanish missionaries in California, and led an unsuccessful rebellion against them. She eventually succumbed to the tide of change, marrying Mañuel Montero,a man of Spanish descent, and dying at the tender age of 39).

The California Gold Rush began not far away in Placerita Canyon and forever changed the character of the neighborhood. The most infamous Chilao resident was the bandit Tiburcio Vasquez, who lived here for 23 years. The early to mid 1900s saw Chilao flourish with human activity which peaked in the mid 1960s and began to decline a decade later. The Station Fire of 2009 almost made Chilao a ghost town. Spared from the fire, Chilao School had sat empty for 30 years when it was given to the non profit association Redbird. The Chilao School property is now inhabited year round and slowly but surely, we are working to put some sense of community back in Chilao.

Why name a horse show after a horse thief?

Tiburcio Vasquez is best known in the American version of history as a feared and ruthless bandit and horse thief. In Mexican history, he is a hero, and some sources claim that the character Zorro was based on him. ( Although Joaquin Murrieta is often noted as the character reference, and Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a missionary gone rogue who died in 1810, is also given that distinction, it is Vasquez who was most like the fictional Zorro).

In learning his history several things become apparent. He was embraced by the people who knew him, and welcomed into numerous homes. His friends were many, and included Indian people, who at the time were still being hunted - the bounty on Indian scalps was a hefty $25.00 at one point (and was only lifted a little over a hundred years ago).

He lived in and around Chilao for 23 years, probably very close to, if not exactly, at the present location of Chilao School and the Chilao Fire Station. He and his compadres stole horses from both Los Angeles and San Bernadino Counties, hid them in Chilao and nearby Horse Flats, and sold and traded them in the opposite counties. Vasquez Rocks, another favorite location of his, bears his name, and Castle Rock in Chatsworth -

which I lived, unknowing, at the foot of for a number of years, was another of his favorite places. Adobe style Indian houses lined the steep slopes of Castle Rock, and I recall what I thought were nothing more than rumors of their remains when I resided there in the early 1980s. I never went to look; the Hell’s Angels had taken up residence just below the great rock face, and they seemed nice enough, but I was always a bit shy.

That he was able to survive for as long as he did, with so many people aware of his location and unwilling to surrender it, is testimony to his character. More than one officer of the law had been told that if they knew the man personally, they might not be so eager to hang him. Indeed, the judge that ultimately did have him hung would later state that justice may well have not been served that day. Although several people had been killed during his raids, there is no proof that it was ever Tiburcio who fired a fatal shot.

Wrote lauded historian Will H. Thrall of Chilao and Vasquez in 1948: “It was said that Jose Gonzales was guard for the camp and stock, living in a little log cabin near the present site of Newcombs Ranch Inn; that he battled with and killed a big bear when armed only with his knife, and this gained for him the nickname of "Chillio," or as we today would say it, "Hot Stuff." In those days the area was known by that name but down through the years the spelling has been changed, by those who did not know, to the Chilao of the present time.”

Few but the Native American people who came before him knew this land better than Tiburcio Vasquez. Its every trail, overlook, outcropping, canyon and stream was known to him. Its beauty was largely unspoiled. His was a life lived under incredible blue skies and star emblazoned nights. His horses fed on native grasses and drank pure mountain water. There were long periods of inactivity in his bandit career - when the bounty of this land carried Vasquez and his followers without need to leave the mountains. There are just a few people who have such a love for this place today, and probably none who know it as intimately. It seems fitting then, that as we bring the spirit of the horse back to Chilao, we do so recalling his name.
