Open a box similar in size to a paper ream — and presto, your family trans-forms into a team of scientists with instruc-tions and parts to recycle paper, build a compost tube, make packing peanuts disappear and more. In another kit, little scientists roll up their sleeves and make slime, gel and goop. Or, how about the opportunity to build a volcano and watch it erupt? This is just a small sampling of the ex-tensive collection of science products that mom of five and Harvard trained biologist — turned mompreneur — Esther Novis offers through her company, The Young Scientists Club. The experiments are de-signed for kids, ages 4 to 12. As the former high school biology teacher tells it, back in 1999 her 5-year-old son needed a challenge and she was “ready to do something else than going to the playground.” Her search for science experiments that fused fun and fostered real learning came up empty, so she cre-ated her own. When her son piped up that he instead wanted to play with his friends, Novis invited them over. The gath-erings grew into a science summer day camp that continues to run out of Novis’

Rhode Island home. When her friends in other parts of the country expressed interest, she started mailing out some of the experiments. The mailings experienced a growth spurt of their own and became a subscription ser-vice. The products are now also available for individual retail purchase and include a series based on the characters from The Magic School Bus books. The camp continues to serve as a test lab for new products. “I’d have to say the most fun I’ve had learning about science is since I’ve been writing and researching for all my own products,” shares Novis, who has also written experiments for science textbooks and articles for national magazines. Novis finds that kids aren’t the only ones who get excited about the science kits. “I think it’s so much fun for the parents, es-pecially for the parents who may not have that strong of a science background.” Each kit comes with detailed instructions. There is also online and phone support. “For me, it’s not making the billion dollar sale,” Novis describes. “For me, it’s trying to get as many children interested in the sciences as I can.”

In 2006, then Dallas fifth-grader Maddie Bradshaw’s search for fun locker magnets came up empty. mom, Diane Bradshaw, never imagining a million dollar business would eventually follow. Her daughter soon repurposed the magnets into “Snap Caps” — bottle caps that can be snapped on and off a magnetic base attached to a suede neck-lace — and started selling them to school friends. At first, it was more of a hobby, just like the kidpreneur’s side business making cus-tomized lap desks. Only, one afternoon changed everything. After a Dallas Learn-ing Express store consigned 50 caps and 50 necklaces, everything sold out in two hours and the store wanted to place an order. Fast-forward to today. A team of 25 employees ensures 50 to 60,000 hand-made Snap Caps ship out monthly to 900 stores. In addition to necklaces, tweens are wearing the caps on headbands, using them as magnets, showcasing their collections on magnetic Snap Cap Keep-ers and attaching them to their boots with magnetic Snap Cap Huggers.

Snap Caps:

The 13-year-old company president, Maddie, and her 9-year-old younger sister, Margot, who is vice president, co-own m3 girl designs — named for Maddie, Margot and Mom. Their mother, a former shoe and handbag buyer, over-sees operations. Before moving forward with the first order, she made sure it was something her girls were interested in doing. “I’m really surprised it has grown this big,” says Maddie. “I think it’s a lot of fun.” Margot, who joined the business once it got off the ground, echoes that sentiment and enjoys when her big sis-ter seeks her advice on “what little girls like.” The girls, who remain the creators of all the designs, primarily focus on school and sports. Most of their profits are ear-marked for college and savings. The girls are humble about their accomplish-ments, something for which their mom is grateful. “I tell both girls this could go away tomorrow.” The company is a 2009 national spon-sor of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and this year is donating all proceeds from its rainbow “Wish Cap” to the non-profit. “My mom has taught us that philanthropy is really important [and] that whenever you receive something you should always give back to others…” says Maddie, who is also giving back to other aspiring kidpreneurs and has a how-to book in the works. “I feel extremely proud,” says Diane Bradshaw of the girls. “I think the whole thing has been so inspiring to other kids, and I think in today’s society, it’s really hard to find healthy role models.” -RK v

3 cups baking mix (Bisquick)2 cups (1/2 lb.) grated Cheddar Cheese

24 cherry tomatoes, halved

Preheat oven to 375. In medium bowl, combine sausage, baking mix and cheese. Mix well with your hands until the meat

and cheese are well mixed (the mixture will seem dry). Roll in your hands and press the mixture into 1-inch balls.

Transfer the sausage balls to a baking sheet and flatten with the palm of your hand. Make a small indention with your thumb

in each patty and nestle a tomato half, cut side up.

Bake until meat is cooked through, about 15 to 25 minutes. Serve hot/warm. Great with salsa!

He’s black and white, round and cud-dly-looking, and speaks Spanish, French, Hebrew, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and English. Meet Little Pim, the animated panda and star of the Little Pim language DVD series, geared for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. The series uses a blend of animated scenes and real-life multicultural footage to introduce everyday vocabulary words around such themes as waking up, eating and playing.

“Kids are hardwired to learn up to three languages without any trouble be-fore the age of 3. This 0 to 3 window is a crucial learning opportunity and most parents are missing it. I felt the calling to make it easier for parents not to miss it,” shares creator Julia Pimsleur Levine, who channeled her documentary filmmaking background and the desire for an effec-tive teaching tool to use with her children into creating the series. The DVD series debuted in late 2007 and has since doubled its language offerings.

Neuroscientist Dr. April Be-nasich, Director of the Infant Studies Laboratory at Rut-gers University and a Little Pim consultant, explains, “As newborns, babies’ brains can discriminate the sounds of every language in the world. Towards the

end of the first year they begin to prefer their native

language and become less receptive to the sounds of other

languages.”

She says while older kids can cer-tainly learn a new language, the ideal time to start is during the first few years while “their brains stay more open and plastic to sounds of other languages — making it easier for them to learn addi-tional languages.” “The challenge is to keep those neurons active by exposing children to a second language,” describes Pimsleur Levine, who grew up speaking English and French and is the daughter of the late Dr. Paul Pimsleur, founder of the Pimsleur Method, a renowned audio-based language pro-gram for adults. Little Pim is a family busi-ness. Her mother, Beverly Pimsleur, serves as Little Pim’s language advisor. Pimsleur Levine’s mission is to make learning a foreign language accessible and fun. Each 35-minute DVD is broken into 5-minute segments, providing stop-ping points for parents and children to practice together. The series, designed to match how young children learn, builds off of familiar words. Parents don’t need any prior knowledge of another language. The series has attracted such celebrity

moms as Angelina Jolie and Constance Zimmer, of Entourage. At LittlePim.com there are download-able companion guides to the DVDs, a “talking” coloring book and other activi-ties. On the site, the company lists benefits that go beyond learning another lan-guage. “Research also proves that young children who learn a language before the age of 5 tend to have superior read-ing, writing, analytical and social skills, as well as more extensive vocabularies than their monolingual peers… It materi-ally contributes to a young child’s cogni-tive development and also gives him an advantage in the future of our increasingly global marketplace.” Watch for many new products includ-ing DVDs in additional languages, flash cards and CDs in French and Spanish featuring some songs from the Baltimore-based Milkshake band. v

From stories about bugs that boogie to a “Doo-Wop Pop” teaching a group of kids a lesson in both music and life

to a tale about the high and low notes in Mozart’s short 35 years, the following children’s books not only teach young

readers about different styles and terms, but just may leave them empowered

to create their own music.


Bugtown BoogieBy Warrren HansonLaura Geringer Books, 2008Suggested Ages: 3-8

“They were all in there a-dancin’ to a buggie-wuggie beat, swingin’ and a-wingin’ and a-tappin’ all their feet. They were buzzin’ by the dozen, swarmin’ all around the floor.” Join a little boy as he walks home one night through

the woods and discovers an underground all-night dance party with itty-bitty partygoers. Blinking lights through a tiny hole in the base of a tree reveal the vibrant “Bugtown Boogie” — home to a full cast, including a termite playing the trumpet, a humbug on the drum, centipedes “shimmyin’ and shakin’ every leg” and a lone stinkbug.

The imaginative, colorful illustrations are sure to reveal something new each time your child flips through the pages.

The Cardboard Piano By Lynne Rae Perkins Greenwillow Books, 2008 Suggested Ages: 4-7

The tale of a gift of a cardboard piano from one young friend to another is the launch pad for a lesson on how even best friends may not always see things in harmony and the importance of put-ting yourself in someone else’s shoes.

Tina wishes she could take piano lessons like her friend, Debbie, but doesn’t have one. After Debbie learns that a long ago, famous Russian musician used a pretend piano to practice during his voyage to America, Debbie makes an elaborate one out of cardboard for Tina, envisioning her learning to play on it and of one day playing duets together. Only, the outcome isn’t one Debbie expects or wants. Your child will join Debbie in gaining knowledge about friendship. A DVD with an animated version of this thoughtfully told story accompanies the book.


M Is for MusicBy Kathleen Krull Harcourt, Inc., 2003Suggested Ages: All

M Is for Music is a far yodel from your basic alphabet book. Each of the artistically illustrated pages includes music-related words — from A for anthem and accordion to Z for zydeco, zither and zippy music. As the inside jacket points out, “Music and the alpha-bet have always gone together. Don’t kids learn their letters by singing the ABCs? But, you’ve never seen — or heard — a musical alphabet like this one.” The book ends with a “musical notes” section and offers definitions for many of the terms introduced.

Doo-Wop Pop By Roni SchotterAmistad, 2008Suggested Ages: 4-8

Five quiet classmates fend off their shyness at school after some en-couragement from the man they call “Doo-Wop Pop.” The school janitor, who sang doo-wop in his early days, challenges one of the kids to “Be-boppa bold, Elijah Earl. Be-boppa brave. Come-a, come-a, come-a outta your cave.”

He teaches the kids some of his signature moves and challenges them to work together to create their own song. You may guess the high notes coming next for the kids, but there is also good news for the Doo-Wop Pop.


Mozart: The Wonder Child: A Puppet Play in Three ActsBy Diane StanleyCollins, 2009Suggested Ages: 8-12

Author and illustrator, Diane Stanley, takes readers 250 years back in time to meet Wolfgang, an amazing 3-year-old boy who is able to pick out chords on the keyboard and soon learns to read music. The next year, the boy we know now as Mozart writes a concerto and at just 6, takes off from his home in Salzburg on an 88-stop tour around Europe.

From there, Stanley whisks her readers off on an adventure, sharing the suc-cesses celebrated and the struggles Mozart endured during his short 35 years. Stanley presents the story as a three-act puppet play, inspired by the Salzburg Marionettes.

Although an illness claims the composer’s life just as he is trying to complete his Requiem, Stanley leaves her readers on an upbeat note, encouraging them to discover Mozart’s music for themselves.

Children who know how to read notes can also try playing the strands of music depicted in some of the illustrations.

A Mommy Tip: How to Quiet a Noisy Toddler - Here’s a trick I used to do when my kids were toddlers. If they were being noisy or fussy - and I wanted them to be quiet, I would go up to their ear and whisper as I talk to them. Because they wanted to hear what I was saying they quieted down! Wish that worked now on my teenagers!!

Cut, dice, and roast your favorite veggies on a cookie sheet. Set aside.

Put 1 box pasta in a casserole dish (dry), pour your favorite sauce over it and fill the jar up halfway w/water...pour water and mix.

Mix in roasted veggies.

Put in oven (at 400) for 35 minutes (give or take, I never am exact) and sprinkle cheese over for the last 10 minutes, uncovered.

Add 2 cups boiling water to the Jello and let dissovle, in a 13 x 9 glass dish. Add 2 cups yogurt and mix in the fruit. Let sit in the refrigerator over night or until hardened. And there you have it..MUSH.

A Local Mom’s Solution to Keep Everything from Runaway Sippy Cups to Children at Bay

What began as a creative solution to keep a beloved, stuffed blue dog on a leash in order to prevent its pint-sized owner from hurling it from the stroller, ultimately unleashed a business idea. Self-professed germaphobe Jennifer Spencer also wanted to protect sippy cups and pacifiers, but felt especially motivated to keep her then toddler’s “Blue Doggy” clean and safe after learning she couldn’t purchase a backup litter of the no-longer-made stuffed pet. The DFW area mom sewed nearly a dozen tethering device prototypes before finding one that did the job. The result – an elastic band covered with a cute patterned, cotton fabric. An adjustable loop at one end holds an item and the other end clips onto the likes of a stroller, shopping cart or baby carrier. “I didn’t stress about the germs anymore,” Spencer shares of what became her own travel-everywhere security object. “It made my life so much easier.” After other parents saw her son, Jake, using the tether, Spencer often received questions about where they could get one and even offers to buy it on the spot. That same year, in 2005, Spencer, who

had an occupational therapy practice, launched Parent Pardners, Inc. together with her father and hit the ground running to get the Take-Along Tether ready to sell. Before the product was available to customers, Spencer stumbled upon a second use. One day at the mall, after her son hid in a clothing rounder, Spencer had an “Aha” moment. She released the stuffed dog from the tether and connected one end to her belt loop and the other to her son’s. The tether is also marketed as “a buddy system.” A quick release buckle in the middle of the tether is designed for emergency purposes and for the convenience of say, being able to refill a sippy cup without disconnecting both ends. The product has garnered wide print and TV coverage. In the company’s early days Spencer’s mother-in-law handled most of the sewing; as demand grew, a local company took over the job. Spencer inspects every tether before packaging. Last year, this mompreneur sold her therapy practice in order to dedicate more time to the Take-Along Tether and to spend more time at home with Jake and big sister Abigail.v

As Summer Reading clubs wrap up at the local libraries, librarians are shifting gears to focus in on their weekly toddler age story time programs. Museum and zoo educators are also shifting their focus to toddler programs. There are more places now than ever before offering programs for parents and toddlers to enjoy together. Zoos in the fall with their lush botanical settings, backdrop of birds singing, autumn breezes blowing and mild temperatures provide a great immersive environment for parent/child nature appreciation and discovery. At the Frank Buck Zoo in Gainesville, TX “Stroller Safari” has become a popular Fall program. Each week “Stroller Safari” meets in front of a different animal exhibit. Zoo education staff shares simple facts about the featured animal(s) of the week. Toddlers are tactile learners so there are always “bio-facts” such as horn, animal wool and replicas for them to touch. Parents and their children will also enjoy meeting one of the many animal ambassadors that take part in the zoo’s amphitheater programs for school age students. Frank Buck Zoo’s “Stroller Safari” ends in time for families to make

their way to the giraffe barn feeding deck for the 10:30am daily giraffe feeding, an up close experience not to be missed. The Frank Buck Zoo’s “Stroller Safari” program is held each Wed. at 10:00am beginning Sept. 2 and ending Oct. 14 and is free with paid admission.

One mom’s Story

Kim Norris had no reason to believe that toys were more than playthings before her daughter, Lindsey, was diagnosed with Hypotonia, or low muscle tone,

at 7 months old. The Bel Air mom realized that her daughter

wasn’t meeting her developmental milestones and brought the issue

up with her pediatrician. That meeting, back in 2006, sparked a journey that has been equally

terrifying and rewarding.

Lindsey’s sessions with speech lan-guage pathologists, occupational thera-pists and physical therapists taught both mother and daughter a lot about “play.” As Norris began to rethink her goals for when her daughter would meet each developmental milestone, she caught on to what the therapists were doing with her daughter and started using toys as instru-ments for learning. As Norris worked to-ward her goals of helping Lindsey to sit unassisted by her first birthday and walk by her second birthday, she used the items in her toy chest as her tools. No “medical equipment” was used during Lindsey’s occupational therapy sessions, Norris recalls. Instead the therapist relied on bottles of bubbles, Play-doh, cups and saucers, and balls.

At home, Lindsey continued to work on her skills by finger painting, pouring water from a teapot into cups, catching bubbles on a bubble wand and playing with chopsticks. “Play is their work. Play is their incentive, it’s how they learn — through mistakes and trials and tribulations,” Norris shares. Furthermore, this self-declared “toy expert” insists that parents don’t have to use a particular brand of toys or even toys at all. A coffee can makes a great drum or noise maker if filled with marbles or pebbles. Parents can also make up games while sitting at the dinner table or driving in the car. For example, in the Norris household they play a game where someone will call out an emotion and everyone has to make that face.

Parents of all children alike can ben-efit from Norris’ techniques. She suggests “identifying your child’s desires and using your imagination” as methods for finding activities that will best serve your family.

Blowing bubbles can help both speech development as well as fine motor skills if you catch the bubbles on the wand and then blow them off.

Make a vocabulary book using an in-expensive photo album filled with actual photographs of body parts, fruits/vegeta-bles, family members, familiar household objects and animals.

Playing with a dollhouse encourages imagination and social interaction.

Norris “looks back on it all like it’s a gift” when she speaks of her life now. Lindsey is 3 years old and thriving, de-spite some continuing challenges. A lot has changed for Norris as well. She has

gone from being a stay-at-home mom to a small business owner. Her experiences with Lindsey inspired her to open her own toy store in Bel Air this past spring.
