• Some plantation owners escaped the • This ended in spread the conflict of race

in Cuba even more

• It was caused by growing frustrations of the people at their rulers

• They had a poor economic system and it was very difficult for colonies to develope

• Many interventions took place during the wars

• The British, Irish and

• French individuals were all against Spain

• America frequently joined the conflict

• Capitalism was the main cause for other countries joining in on the wars

• Many countries had investments that became threatened when they were at war• Agriculture, ranching, mining, manufacturing, and population were

threatened• These events stopped trade as well

• Even with their independence, they were unable to form a stable political structure

• Strikes in the unions caused problems for trade commerce and land owners

• After many problems with their leader Perón was arrested but was soon after released and made president

• Perón promised social justice and strong nationalism

• A major achievement of his was the purchase of the British owned railways for Argentina

• After the death of Perón’s wife, the government began to falter• Revenue decreased because of this he cracked down on the people to try to

make up for the decrease in production• It wasn’t long before Argentina became divided

The Second World-Modern Latin America• The U.S. had initially attempted to support Argentina after their great loss of money

• Argentina quickly began to lose support from many countries• they were dependent on foreign investments• Argentina’s unstable poor economy was unreliable

• The country was no longer considered a respectable place and it shows what can happen when a nation is so dependent on the investments of other countries

• Poor previous leadership lead them to a financial meltdown that made it almost impossible to get new investors

• Among other problems, national gas supplies were dwindling

The Second World-Modern Latin America

• Brazil and Argentina were rivals and both had nuclear weapons at the ready

• Now they cooperate in trade• This shows how when differences are solved, it benefits

everyone

• Argentina, like many Latin American countries, wanted to emulate Chile

• Chile has the most vibrant economy of all these countries

• Chile is able to trade with china whose high prices contributed to its growth

• Chile keeps its distance from unruly continental affairs but seeks alliances wherever it can

• It is the only country that seems to really have a chance at joining the first world in the near future

The Second World-Modern Latin America

• The country of Chile was started off instantly towards success as it was quickly developing near its beginnings• This is even more remarkable because of its

challenging geography

• It was thought that economic growth is what would reduce poverty but Chile focused on education and technology• Because of this incomes doubled and poverty

dropped below 15% since 1990

• Its advantage was that it was the gateway to the overseas market• This created jobs for the people and

increased the trade

• Chile had free trade agreements with the U.S. and China which was also highly beneficial

Page 9: Modern latin america

The Second World-Modern Latin America• Another one of Chile’s great advantages was its

openness to trade and its low levels of corruption

• Instead of fighting Bolivia over territory, Chile gave Bolivia access to its ports in exchange for unlimited oil and gas

• This once again shows how working out differences ends more beneficial than fighting • The country also uses its

resources to create dams for use of hydroelectric power• They also focus on

environmental preservation of their resources

• Chile has the best government of the Latin American nations with its stable politics

• Other countries should follow the example of Chile for its success
