WiMAX Forum vs IEEE 802.16 Group
To define 802.16 standards To develop the testprocedures andcertifications that demonstrate
interoperability among WiMaxvendors' gear
A working group under IEEE Organization to certify thecompatibility and theinteroperability ofBWAproducts (specifically thosedescribed by IEEE 802.16 andETSI HiperMAN)

802.16 Standards History
Extension for 2-11 GHz: Targeted for non-line-of-sight, Point-to-Multi-Pointapplications like last mile broadband access
Original fixed wireless broadband air Interfacefor 10 66 GHz: Line-of-sight only, Point-to-Multi-Point applications

WiFi vs WiMAX
Mobility is possible. No Mobility
Up to 70Mbps Up to 54Mbps
Max~ 35km(~10km : 802.16e) max < 100m
QoS can be guaranteed QoS not guaranteed
Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)
Hotspot or LAN
Use licensed and unlicensedspectrum
Use unlicensed spectrum 802.16d/e standards 802.11a/g standards

WIMAX FDD and TDD Profiles
Guard time required betweenDL and UL
Guard channel requiredbetween DL and UL
Cost higher Cost lower as same filters, mixers etc. for transmitter and
receiver
Not efficient for asymmetricoperations, but suitable forVoice and E1 backhauling.
Little waste of spectrum forasymmetric operations
Difficult to support multiplenational FDD spectrumallocation
Easier to support multiplenational TDD spectrumallocation
A pair of spectrum blocksrequired for DL and UL
Same frequency spectrumblock for DL and UL

Summary
WiMAX Forum certify products follow 802.16 and ETSIHiperMAN.
IEEE 802.16 group defines standards for PHY and MAC.
WiMAX is extension of WiFi, with capability to guaranteequality of service and provide mobility.
Initial WiMAX product focus on TDD mode as it is ideallyfor transport of asymmetric traffic and lower cost formodem.
