Here are a few questions to consider:

• Howdidyoucopewiththehardtimes?Whathelpedyoutogetthroughthelowpoints?Whohelpedyou?

• Lookingatyourlifeline,whathavebeenyourtopthreemajorlifeevents?

GettinG started

In the last session, we introduced the Together We Canprogramtoyou.WealsostartedworkingonyourMemory Book. Before we start ontoday’slesson,let’stalkaboutsomeofthethingsyoumayhavethoughtaboutsincethe last session:

• Didyougiveanyfurtherthoughttotheyarnnetworkactivitythatwedidasagroup?Whatdidyouthinkaboutit?Didyoutellothersclosetoyouaboutwhatyoulearnedfrom theactivity?

Atthissession,wearegoingtolookmorecloselyatyourpastlifeevents.Understandingyourselfwillhelpyouhavehealthyrelationshipswithotherpeopleandbethebestparentyoucanbe.Wewillalsolookatyourgoalsanddevelopapictureofwhatyouwouldliketohavehappenasa result of this program.

Much of the time in this program will be spent talkingaboutandplanningforyourchildren’sandyourownfuture.Beforewebeginfocusingonthefuture,we’regoingtotakealookback.Lookingatthepastalsohelpsusdreamaboutand plan for the future.

OnthehandoutisadrawingofZakia’slifeline.Alifelineisawayofshowingtheupsanddownsinone’slife.YoucanseeonZakia’slifelinethatshefacedsomeveryhardtimes,likebeingkickedoutofherparent’shome.Butshealsohadsome

Research even shows that people who set goals for themselves and meet them are:

• Lessanxious

• Morefocused

• Moreselfconfident

• Happierandmoresatisfied

Not all goals are alike. The most important step hereistosetgoalsthathelpyouworktowardwhatyouwant.Sometimespeoplesetgoalsthataretoobig,andtheybecomediscouragedwhentheyfailtoreachthem.Otherpeoplesetgoalsthataretoosmall,andtheyloseinterestinthem.The trick is finding the right balance.

Hereisaneasyformulatohelpyousetgoalsthat work. It is called SMART Goals:

• S = SpeCifiC. The goal should emphasize what youwanttohappen.Whatareyougoingtodo?Trytouseactionwordslikedirect,organize,developorplan.Whyisthisimportantformetodo?HowIamgoingtodoit?

• M=Measurable.Thismeansyouwillknowwhenyouhavereachedthegoal.Forexample,peoplewhowanttoloseweightusuallysetaweightlossgoalinpounds.Notallgoalscanbemeasuredinthiswaybutthinkabouthowyouwillbeabletoseethechangeyouwant.

• a=attainable.This goes back to our earlierpointaboutsettinggoalsthatyoucantrulyreach.Ifyourgoalsaretoohigh,youwillbecome discouraged and give up.

• r=realistic.Thisdoesnotmeaneasybutdo-able.Youwanttochallengeyourselfjustalittlebit,butnottoomuch.Asyoureachyourgoals,youbecomeexcitedaboutmovingontothenextone.

• t=tiMely.Setatimeforwhenyouhopetoreachyourgoal.Ifyoudon’t,youruntheriskofnotworkingtowardsit.Someofusaregreatat putting things off until tomorrow.

• Whatrelationshipsdidyouincludeinyourlifeline?Whomostinfluencedyourlifeinagoodwayorabadway?

• Isyourlinealwaysaboveorbelowtheneutralorbaseline?Whatdoesthattellyou?

• Whenyouthinkaboutyourlifelineinthefuture,whatdoyouwantittolooklike?Whatkindofeventsdoyouhopetosee?

Ifparticipantsareattendingasacouple,have them complete their own scrapbook page.Spendsometimeansweringquestionsabouthowtocompletethegoalsheetifparticipantsstruggledwithdoingthisashomework.Prepareflipchartsahead of time with the information below on goals.

Foryourhomework,youwereaskedtofilloutthe handout called My Goals. The purpose of this homeworkwastohaveyouthinkaboutwhatyouwanttogetoutofthisprogram.Onewaytohelpyougetthemostoutofthisexperienceistosetgoalsforyourself.

If you look at your past it can help you dream about the future. You can look back and see what was happening when times were hard and when times were good. It can help you imagine what direction your life could go in the future. This can help you set goals.

One way to think about the past is to draw a lifeline. Let’s look at the lifeline Zakia drew.
