Review: Selecting Projects
A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. Step #1 in DMAIC is selecting a solid Yellow Belt project.
One tendency people have is to take whatever project they
planned to do anyway and call it a “Six Sigma” project. This doesn’t
always work!

DMAIC Projects
Not every project qualifies to be a Six Sigma project!
DMAIC is the method to use when you have …
• an existing process• it’s broken (too slow, poor quality, too costly, etc.)
• you don’t know the cause or solution

Where Do I Find a Project?
Look for processes that are too complex, areas
with too much waste, cost or confusion, or where
excess variation is causing problems
There are several ways to find projects at Olin Brass:
Look for processes that are causing you “pain” – customers are complaining, things that are taking too long or aren’t done right
Compare yourarea’s process outcomes to
to competitors, standards or
best practices

Example Processes
To start your thought process consider this sample of typical processes you may find in a practice. Candidate processes are those that have less than desired quality outcomes, take too long, or perhaps contain waste.
Casting
Annealing
Inspecting
Testing
Scheduling
Billing
Cleaning
Changing Over
Measuring
Disposing of hazardous waste
Documenting or Coding
Completing paperwork

Considerations for selecting a good Yellow Belt project:
– The process you are fixing is part of your existing job
– You control the “x dials”
– You can get data easily
– The scope is small enough that you can do this part time by yourself or with several volunteers (while still doing your day job) over a 2-8 week period
– Your management supports the effort

Selecting a Team
The project you select impacts who will be on your team. Many Yellow Belt projects are done by people on their own, but sometimes they recruit helpers. This is a decision you’ll have to make early on.
You may recall from White Belt training that there are several roles
in any Six Sigma Yellow Belt project.
• Sponsor• Champion• Yellow Belt• Coach / Advisor• Team Members

Assembling Your Team
Once you have selected a project,
determine who best fulfills each role.
Sometimes it helps if you have a draft Charter or SIPOC first to help explain what you are working on.
Recruit them, explaining your proposed project,
timeline, and their duties.
