    PREFACE

    PRACTICAL APPROACHES FOR TEACHERS TEACHING ENGLISH UPSR

    is a comprehensive guide designed to help teachers meet the challenge of teaching

    English Language in primary schools. It gives teachers an insight on step by step

    approaches on how to tackle questions in Paper 1 and Paper 2. It is hoped that byusing this guide teachers are able to help their pupils to achieve better results in the

    UPSR English Language Test.

    This up-to-date guidebook is based on the topics in the English language syllabus for

    the primary school and thorough research of the school text books and past-year

    UPSR papers. It adheres to the latest development and requirements of the UPSR

    examination as stipulated in Huraian Sukatan Pelajaran. The contents of this

    guidebook are effective and practical for teachers who wish to attain excellent results

    for their pupils in the UPSR English Language paper. Teachers are encouraged to

    make use of the guidelines to assist their pupils. They may adapt or adopt the model

    test papers given. It is our hope that the teachers will benefit tremendously from them.

    E 31 - 40 READING COMPREHENSION

    Steps in answering comprehension questions

    Read the passage quickly to get a general idea of the

    passage (skimming). Do not waste time on difficult words.

    Read the questions given (study the needs of the

    questions).

    Read through the passage slowly and carefully a second

    time (scanning) to find answers to given questions.

    Underline words or phrases which may help.

    Read the questions carefully again, paying attention to

    words in bold /italic or words in quotation marks.

    (e.g. best / most probably /them in line .)

    From the options A, B, C and D, tell pupils to cancel theimpossible answers. Usually there are two of them. Then,

    check the remaining options for the BEST possible

    answer.

    For the vocabulary question, advise them to choose aword that is of the same tense and part of speech as the

    original word.

    If a question is difficult, ask them to do other questions

    first and come back to it later.

    Remind them not to leave any questions unanswered.

    2.2 PAPER 2

    Pupils should master a variety of grammatical items such as conjunctions,

    prepositions, interjections, various types of pronouns in order to produce compound

    and complex sentences.

    2.2.1 Tips on Writing

    Section A

    1. The pupils need to read the instructions carefully.

    2. Get them to study the picture and label what they see in the picture.

    3. Let them write as many words as they can. Tell them to look out for action

    words, prepositions or adjectives if necessary.

    4. Tell them that the words given may help. These words will give clue or clues

    on how to construct sentences.

    5. Then gradually guide them to build phrases from the words that they have

    written. Use the phrases to construct good sentences.

    6. The pupils need to decide on the tenses and pronouns to be used.

    5. When constructing sentences, make sure that they are grammatically correct.

    6. Remind them to write the sentences in the simple present tense or present

    continuous tense

    7. Make sure they use correct punctuation and spelling.

    8. Make sure what the pupils write is relevant to the stimuli and describes thepicture given.

    Section B

    1. The pupils need to read and understand the given text.

    2. Guide them to identify the information to be transferred.

    3. Then they are required to fill in the ten blanks in the table with relevant

    information.

    4 Remind them to copy accurately from the text.

    5. Tell them to check and see that the answers are correct.

    6. When answering Part B, remind them to make sure that only one choice is

    made and give a short description of it. They can use the information in the

    table to help them.

    Reminder :

    For question 2 (a), your pupils must :

    o read the information given carefully a few times.

    o understand the requirement of the text.

    o transfer only the required information

    o look at the examples given when filling in the blanks make sure you.

    o take note of punctuation, spelling and legibility.

    (Be careful with your capital letters P, M, L, K,S)

    For question 2 (b), tell the pupils to bear in mind that:

    o this is a thinking skills question.

    o consider all the aspects/factors before you make your decision

    and give reasons for your choice based on the aspects given.

    o take note of punctuation, spelling, grammar and legibility.

    o To make the choice based on the instruction eg. sister, mother or

    family

    o when making the choice, make sure that they have their reasons to

    support their answer. Use phrases they can get from the information if

    there is any.

    Section C

    1. Tell your pupils to read the instructions carefully.

    2. Get them to study the pictures and the words given. These words will indicate

    the correct tense to use.

    3. Encourage them to use all the words given.

    4. Guide them to make short simple sentences first. Then change them into

    compound or complex sentences by using conjunctions.

    5. They have to make sure that the sentences are grammatically correct.

    6. Guide the pupils to make the description as interesting as possible by usingadjectives and adverbs.

    7. The pupils are encouraged to use variety of sentences.

    8. Remind your pupils to make sure that there is a flow in the story.

    9. Tell them to pay attention to their spelling and punctuation.

    10. They must write neatly and legibly.

    Reminder:

    o Study the pictures and notes given to determine the appropriate tense(s) to be

    used in the writing.
