Dear factory planer, design a factory which can produce watches today and cars tomorrow, that can produce different volumes each day, which is inflatable and transportable (Helmut Schulte). The global competition, wide production programs und frequent discontinuities lead to so far unknown challenges for the planning process of factories. Besides the classical resource, layout and logistic planning, also the definition of the own value adding scope, the choice and allocation of suitable production locations, the conception of production systems and the usage of suitable planning tools, are part of the process. The lecture factory planning shows the state of the art of the particular topics, bestpractice methods and approaches are explained and reference solutions presented. The theoretical content is deepened by an accompanying case-study and the presentation of actual industrial factory planning projects. This approach enables future production managers and factory planners to define and develop single production plants as well as production networks of globalized companies.

Content The course will focus on the following concepts:

• Characteristics of innovation

• Stages and methods of the innovation process

• Creativity and technical problem solving as core activities of innovation

• Networks & alliances for innovation; distributed / open innovation

• Technological change, S-curves, and disruptive innovation as core concepts of technology management

• Launch and marketing of new products

The class is entirely case-study based, but will also integrate short lecture modules and in-class exercises and group work. In addition, we will discuss a number of academic journal papers on the topics of the class.

Aims and Learning Outcomes

Overall goal: Students gain theoretical and practical knowledge in innovation management as preparation for interdisciplinary leadership roles.

Creating and managing new technological knowledge is a key success factor of most firms. The idea of the class is to provide an introduction into innovation management from both the perspective of a manager who has to make decisions about her firm's technology and innovation management processes and from the perspective of an academic researcher studying these decisions.

We will discuss some selected core questions of managing innovation in a corporate context. We will focus both on strategic aspects of setting up the capabilities and competences of a firm to innovate and on the particular tasks and processes to manage one product/service development project.
