Intended Learning OutcomesAt the end of this module, typical students should be able to: . recognize the thematic, narrative and stylistic features of a selection of texts representative of different European literarymovements;• contextualise analyses of the texts in question within the cultural, social and historical contexts to which they speak;• and within the broad framework of gender studies;• recognize and analyse the similarities and differences between the primary sources considered in terms of their portrayals ofgendered identities; • demonstrate this accumulated knowledge in a comparative essay of appropriately academic style and register.

Teaching and Learning MethodsThe course will be divided into three parts, each dedicated to a text from the European literary canon as represented by thethree languages taught with the School of Modern Languages: French, Italian and Spanish. However as this is a school-widemodule and students will not have a working knowledge of all three languages, class discussions will be based on referenceto an agreed English translation of the work in question. Each part of the course will begin with an introductory lecture to the author/text to be studied, and the following two sessionswill be seminars for which preparatory reading (including secondary sources where relevant) and points for consideration willbe set, so that a guided discussion can take place. A final, concluding seminar will be used to generate a comparativediscussion of the works studied in order to aid students in formulating their comparative essay assignment.

Assessment MethodsThe summative assessment for this module takes the shape of a single essay of 2000-2500 words, which must compare andcontrast two of the texts studied.

Formative assessment is carried out via informal group presentation work and guided seminar discussions.

Intended Learning OutcomesBy the end of this module students should be able to:• recognize the stylistic and thematic features of selected modernist texts from across world literature, represented by worksfrom France or the Francophone world, Italy, and Spain or Latin America;• distinguish between the varied historical, socio-political and cultural contexts that have informed the creation of the selectedtexts; • but also recognize the similarities between those works in terms of stylistic choice and thematic concerns;• demonstrate this accumulated inter-cultural and awareness and literary knowledge in a comparative essay written in anappropriately academic register and style.

Teaching and Learning MethodsThe course will be divided into three parts, each dedicated to a text from the modernist literary canon of the three languagestaught with the School of Modern Languages: French, Italian and Spanish. However as this is a school-wide module andstudents will not have a working knowledge of all three languages, class discussions will be based on reference to an agreedEnglish translation of the work in question.

Assessment Methodshe course is assessed by a single essay of 2500-3000 words, which must consider two of the texts studied, comparing andcontrasting their version of literary modernism and/or shared thematic interests.
