Comprehension Test 1:

Read the passage. Thereafter, answer the questions.

Tigger comes to the Forest

1. Pooh woke up after hearing a noise. He went to see who was trying to get into his honey cupboard – there was no one there. He heard the noise again.

2. There were many noises in the forest, but this was different. It wasn’t a growl, a purr or a hiss, but… it was coming from outside Pooh’s door.

3. Pooh opened the door. “Who’s there?”

Pooh saw a strange creature. It was orange with black stripes and a pink nose.

4. “I'm Pooh,” said Pooh.

“I'm Tigger,” said Tigger.

“Pleasure to meet you. You’re a strange creature. Can I help you?” Pooh asked.

“Could I have some food?” asked Tigger.

5. Pooh offered Tigger everything he had to eat in his house, but Tigger refused it all! “Tiggers don’t eat any of this.” Tigger said.

“We will go and find Christoper Robin, he will know what to do,” said Pooh. They left. Pooh said nothing - he was thinking of a poem.

6. What shall we do about poor little Tigger?

If he eats nothing, he'll never get bigger. He doesn't like honey, acorns or thistles, because of the taste and the bristles.

But whatever his weight in pounds or ounces.

He always seems bigger because of his bounces.

7. Finally, they found Christopher . “There you are, Tigger!” said Christopher Robin. “I've found a Pooh,” said Tigger. “But I can’t find breakfast!”

Comprehension Test 2:

Read the questions about an extract from “The Tales of Peter Rabbit” by Beatrix Potter. Then read the extract carefully, as many times as you think you need to, so that you can answer the questions correctly.

Extract from: “The Tales of Peter Rabbit” by Beatrix Potter

1. Once upon a time there were 4 little rabbits, and their names were, Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter. They lived with their mother in a sandbank, underneath the root of a big fig tree.

2. “Now my dears,” said old Mrs Rabbit one morning, “you may go into the fields or down the lane, but don’t go into Mr McGregor’s garden! Your father had an accident there and he was put in a pie by Mrs McGregor.” “Now run along and don’t get into mischief. I’m going out.” Then, old Mrs Rabbit took her basket and her umbrella and went through the woods to the baker’s. She bought a loaf of brown bread and five currant buns.

3. Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries, but Peter, who was a very naughty little bunny, ran straight away to Mr McGregor’s garden and squeezed under the gate. First he ate some lettuces and some French beans and then he ate some radishes, and then, feeling rather sick, he went to look for some parsley. But, around the end of the cucumber frame, who should he meet, but Mr McGregor!

4. Mr McGregor was on his hands and knees pulling out young cabbages when his eyes met Peter’s. Mr McGregor jumped up and ran after Peter, waving a rake and calling out, “Stop thief!”

5. Peter’s heart was pounding. He rushed all over the garden as he had forgotten the way back to the gate. He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages and the other shoe amongst the potatoes. After losing them, he ran on all fours and went faster. He might have got away altogether if he had not unfortunately run into a gooseberry bush which caught him by the large buttons on his jacket. It was a blue jacket with big brass buttons. As Mr McGregor came closer, Peter managed to free himself by wriggling out of his jacket.

6. He rushed into the tool shed and jumped into a watering can. It would have been a beautiful thing to hide in, if it had not had so much water in it. Mr McGregor was quite sure that Peter was somewhere in the tool shed, perhaps hidden underneath a flowerpot. He began to turn them over carefully, looking under each one.
