at night. lt

But
whatever
its

al
outdoor
lighting
has
the
basic
purpose
of
providing
visibllity.
Good
visibility
is
achieved when the

can
quickly

l\.4uch

than purely
a

of illumination, visibility
is
better described as a function of

where
a set
of factors
are brought together in harmony.

Adequate Light Levels
For reasons of conservative des

l\.4oldcast

Minimized

Glare
By
way
of the r cutoff
classificatjons,
the IES attempts to
descr be
the
high
ang e
glare
produced
by outdoor
uminaires. Specifically they
state
"a

This applies to any

lun'rinaire."3
ln
effect,
the
IES has
designated
any
light above 80" as unnecessary
and
a
potent
ally dangerous source of
glare.
While
this is often reasonable, l\4oldcast
believes that in many
app
ications
(depending
on
the
environment and
the mounting height) this may not
be
suffic
