NAPLAN 2016

This week parents will receive their child’s NAPLAN results. All students who participated in the NAPLAN tests will get an individual

report of their results. NAPLAN individual student reports provide information about what students know and have achieved in the areas

of reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy. They also provide information on how students have performed in relation to

other students in the same year group, and against the national average (over one million students participate in NAPLAN tests each

BOYS SOFTBALL PSSA FINALISTS

Last Friday I was excited to hear that our Primary Boys Softball Team had been successful at winning the Western Region Section of

the PSSA Carnival in Mudgee and will progress to the NSW State Finals later this year. This is an amazing feat considering that the

boys have had limited exposure to the game prior to playing in the school competition. Thank you Mrs Mutton for introducing the boys

MOLONG RSL GALLERY PROJECT COMES TO AN END At the end of Term 1 the School was approached by the RSL Portrait Gallery to assist by making an online presence for the Portrait Gallery. Year 10 ICT took up the challenge. They researched different mediums for the online presence which was also to act as a guide to the gallery. Two different approaches were taken with one group researching the production of an app while the other group focussed on the production of an interactive website. Both groups required visits to the Portrait Gallery to collect the information and photographs that would form part of the end product. There was also a lot of research about the local identities that are represented in the gallery, as this information would be provided to the end user either by means of the app or website. After working on this project for a term, the two teams presented their end products to Helen Haynes and the decision was made that the ongoing cost of the app would be prohibitive to the Gallery and they decided to go with the website. This website is now live http://www.molongrslportraitgallery.com.au. I am proud of the very mature approach that the students took to this real world task, they needed to research their chosen medium, produce an end product and then present this to the Gallery representative. Thanks to the Gallery for giving the school the opportunity to provide such an engaging task with tangible results. On Monday 15th August the students were all awarded with a Certificate and pen and have been deemed “Friends of the Gallery”. Please see photo at right.

SCHOOL CAPTAIN NOMINATIONS FOR 2017 The school is in the process of selecting Captains for 2017, which involves several steps just to be successful in the nomination phase. To be eligible, students must have a sound academic record, have received no demerits in 2016 and have a sound community record. Nominees are then required to write an application for the position detailing their ideas regarding leadership at MCS and outline what they would do to provide that leadership. They then attend an interview with a panel where they are asked questions about their ideas and capabilities as a school leader. The School Principal and current Captains form part of the panel. Candidates then present a speech to the Secondary school at a formal assembly, and this is repeated for all staff K-12 and Yr 12 students so all in the school community have an opportunity to hear the speech supporting their nomination. The steps outlined above are, in themselves, a test of leadership and any who make it through this process should be proud of their accomplishments. This year we have seven students who have been through this process, hoping to take on this leadership role in their final year at MCS. Karla Pearson, Bohdi Johnson, Jessica Burgess, Brooke Watts, Tieke Thomas and Shanniece Callan have made it this far, and we wish them all the best over the next week as the process is finalised. Please see photo of students below.

What a busy time of the year it is! Our Athletics Carnival finally happened after so much rain. Unfortunately, the rain water logged the grounds at Orange High school and the Orange District PSSA could not go ahead with the District Athletics Carnival. Alternative arrangements were made and next week we will announce in the Newsletter who qualified to represent our district at Western. For those of you who ordered singlets, we are awaiting instructions from ODPSSA.

Congratulations to our Age Champions.
