A BUSY TIME AT MOLONG CENTRAL
The next few weeks are very busy as we approach the end of the term with learning experiences and extracurricular activities. Our teachers will be very busy organising opportunities and preparing for excursions. It is most helpful if you can ensure that payment is made on time for excursions. We have worked at ensuring there is enough notice given before an excursion so that parents have time to organise themselves for this extra expense and School Stream is being used to provide an additional reminder to the notes that accompany excursions.
PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES
Molong Central School has a strong reputation of providing a wide variety of extra-curricular opportunities to students. These opportunities range from sporting representation, cultural experiences, social opportunities and excursions that compliment Key Learning Area content. These opportunities often come at a cost to students. Sometimes families find themselves having difficulties with these expenses. Although student assistance is an option when these times arrive it is not always possible to cover the total cost of more expensive excursions. Our staff work tirelessly to keep the costs as low as possible and should you require assistance please make an appointment with me well before the final cut-off date for payment. WONDERFUL WRITING
Last week the Primary assembly Hayley Miller from Mrs Brown’s class read her creative writing piece to the assembly. Hayley’s work highlighted the talents some of our students have developed and the joy and expression that Hayley exhibited whilst reading was felt by all who listened to her story. I look forward to reading more outstanding examples of writing throughout the year.

NEWS FROM THE ENGLISH FACULTY This year in English we have hit the ground running. All levels are busily working towards their first assessment task with the exception of Year 12 who have already submitted their major work for 2017. This is their Area of Study Portfolio which consists of an extended text based response, a piece of creative writing and a range of short answer questions as well as journal entries. This year’s concept is Discovery and the range of multi-modal responses demonstrates our students’ creative imaginations. This week Year 7-10 have been completing PAT-R testing which allows us to assess each students’ ability and structure lessons accordingly. This is part of the Orange Network’s initiative to improve literacy levels. As part of this strategy all students in Years 7-10 are continuing their involvement with the online literacy program, ‘Wordflyers’. This year we have expanded the program to include Year 10. This program allows all students to work at their own pace to improve their levels of literacy. The exciting news is that this program can be accessed at home so your child should consider including it in their home study program. As we near the half-way point of the Term your child is about to undertake their first assessment task in English. These may take many different forms so I encourage you to take an active interest in these tasks as they reflect the dynamic and ever-changing subject that is English. Ms Geraldine Brown, English Faculty.
Above is a photo of some of the Year 12 Multi-Modal texts which were submitted as part of their AOS Portfolio.
ART EXCURSION TO COWRA GALLERY FOR THE ARCHIBALD PRIZE On Tuesday the 7th of March a collection of art students from Year 7 through to Year 11 visited Cowra Art Gallery to view their exhibit of forty-nine of the fifty-one official Archibald Portrait Prize 2016 finalists. After a short bus trip and the requisite McDonald’s stop, we arrived at the gallery and were greeted by the gallery curators. They gave a brief overview of the history of the prize, this year’s entrants and some of the past controversies that the competition has faced. Molong students were commended for their attentive and inquisitive attitude before being split into two groups of fifteen to view the portraits. The other group did a drawing activity based on images of the portraits in the gallery just next door. Both of the gallery’s curators took groups through the exhibition and pointed out different aspects of the very different portraits, highlighting some interesting facts. The portraits were incredibly varied and everyone had their favourite portrait, which they robustly put a case forward as to why it was their favourite and why they thought it should have won. After a relaxed lunch where debate and discussion about the competition continued, we all headed back to the bus for the drive back to school. Upon our return, we held the ‘Molong Central School Student’s Choice Award’ with the clear winner being ‘Deng’ by artist Nick Stathopoulos. The incredibly detailed portrait of Sudanese refugee and lawyer Deng Adut was also the 2016 People’s Choice winner and very popular with Molong art students. The excursion was enjoyed by all students who relished the chance to visit a local gallery that was given the fantastic opportunity of holding such a prestigious and national event as the 2016-17 Archibald Prize. A big thank you to Mrs Claire Ryan for organising the excursion and Cowra Art Gallery for having us. Mrs Elizabeth Byrne, Visual Art Faculty

HOW TO HELP YOUR STUDENT WITH
ASSESSMENT TASKS
Assessment tasks are important tools used by teachers to work
out each student’s knowledge, skills and understanding and rate
of progress.
It is important that teachers get the most accurate picture of each
student’s personal performance in each task in order to help them
most effectively.
To really help your student.
Encourage them to start the task well before the due
date.
Get them to explain to you what the task requires. If they
seem confused, direct them to their teacher for
clarification.
Read drafts of the task. Correct spelling, grammar and
punctuation mistakes with your child and explain your
corrections. If unsure, underline words and passages
and ask them to check with their teacher.
After reading a draft, discuss what you have learned
from your reading. Point out areas which may need
greater explanation and explain why you had trouble
understanding.
Encourage them to constantly revise their work with you
as an audience in the above manner.
Encourage them to submit a draft to the teacher before
the due date to receive feedback and to ensure they are
meeting task requirements.
Try not to...
Let others complete your child’s work for them. This
prevents the classroom teacher from understanding
exactly what your child does or does not know and a
false picture of their learning and progress. This can only
result in ‘gaps’ in your child’s knowledge and
understanding which are likely to cause problems in later
learning.
Compare your child’s results with others. Concentrate
instead on their individual progress and improvement.
Communicate directly with the child’s teacher about how
to complete the assessment task. A valuable skill for
your child is learning to discuss and clarify their thoughts
directly with the teacher.
Create stress for your student. While assessment tasks
are important, they are not the only measure of your
student’s success at school. Emphasize the importance
of personal improvement rather than overall results.

PRIMARY NEWS
Primary School Disco Last Wednesday all students K-6 attended our first Disco for the year under the theme, “Dress as your favourite TV show or movie character”. With this in mind we had some very interesting characters dancing in our school hall. Amongst them all we had Captain Hook, Alice in Wonderland, Minions and Casper the Ghost. It was great to see the effort all the students put into their costumes. A big thankyou to all the Primary staff who attended to supervise this fun filled evening. Without their help such occasions would not happen. A big thankyou to Stage 3 for hosting the night. A fantastic night.

Hi Everyone,
It has been lovely to see so many students and their families visit
the Book Fair over the past week. The Library has been a very busy
place and we have had some very savvy customers who have spent
a great deal of time selecting their books. The support from the
school community has been greatly appreciated and it is hoped
that the commission we receive will help us to purchase some new
resources for the collection.
The 2017 Premier’s Reading Challenge website is up and running.
Students are now able to login using their DoE credentials and
enter the books they have read. I would like to congratulate
Sophie Heath (5/6 Rooster) & Olivia Hobbs (1/2 Eagle ) for
completing the 2017 PRC. These girls have borrowed consistently
since last September and I commend them for their efforts. A
detailed note will be sent home this week explaining the PRC.
Could you please return ASAP, the note to the Library, indicating
whether or not your child will be taking part in the Challenge this
year?
