Surface preparation

First clean and degrease the surface which will be coated with MOLYKOTE 106 Anti-Friction Coating. Phosphatization or sandblasting (180 grid) increases the adhesion and service life.

How to apply

Stir the Anti-friction Coating thoroughly before applying by spraying, dipping, centrifuging or brushing. Recommended dry film thickness: 5 to 20μm.

Curing

60 minutes at 150°C, 30 minutes at 180°C(Object temperature).

Solubility

Thinning can be carried out using MOLYKOTE® L 13 Thinner.

LIMITATIONSThese greases should not be applied tosurfaces that are to be painted. Thesegreases should not be used with highlyloaded ferrous metal bearing

combinations, especially where slidingfriction is encountered.

• Suitable for permanent lubrication, with simultaneous corrosion protection, of friction contacts involving high compressive stress and low speeds, and wherever oils or greases cannot be used for technical reasons or are undesirable because of the risk of soiling.

• Used successfully on hinge pins, plain bearings, cams, keyways and dentate couplings on aircraft, on pins, springs and bearing surfaces of motor-car brakes, moving parts of locks, switches and regulators; on special chains and on all types of magnetic armature.

HOW TO USE

How to apply

Carefully degrease friction surfaces with solvent and allow solvent to evaporate completely. Stir the anti-friction coating thoroughly and apply by spraying, dipping, painting or centrifuging (dilute with MOLYKOTE® L 13 - approximately 10-20%). The friction surfaces should be coated as evenly and thinly as possible. Annealing: 2 hours at 150°C

or 1 hour at 200°C.

Diluting agent: L 13 thinners.

HOW TO USEFor best results, clean and drysurfaces before application.

Dow Corning silicone compounds canbe applied by hand, by speciallydesigned automated equipment, orby brushing or wiping. When usingsome high pressure dispensingequipment, separation and compac-tion can occur. Certain designs ofgrease guns may seize with siliconecompounds; test prior to using.

Where a thinner consistency isneeded, the compound can bedispersed in a solvent and appliedby brushing or spraying.1

USE LIMITATIONSThese specific Dow Corningcompounds should not be applied:• To any surface that will be

painted or finished. Suchcoatings may not adhere to the

silicone-treated surfaces. Ifcontaminated by a siliconecoating, parts can be wiped orwashed with solvent or washedwith detergent.

• To O-rings or other componentsmade of silicone rubber becausethey can deteriorate the siliconerubber. These compounds willalso slightly swell natural butylrubbers. Any rubber should betested for excessive swell orshrink.

Because each application may varyin chemical composition, pressure,flow velocity, relubrication require-ments and equipment design, thesilicone compound should be testedbefore adopting for regular use.

These compounds are not intended foruse with liquid oxygen or other strongoxidizing chemicals and should not beused in applications requiring LOXcompatibility.

These products are neither tested norrepresented as suitable for medical orpharmaceutical uses.

The solvent evaporates after applica-tion, leaving a nearly transparent, thinfilm. This lubricant film begins to meltat 32°C (90°F) and adheres tenaciouslyto most surfaces, whether in a solid orfluid state.

HOW TO USEApplicationDow Corning 557 Silicone Dry FilmLubricant may be sprayed from anaerosol can or an automatic lubricator,applied by brushing or dipping. Only avery thin film is needed for maximumresults. The film is useful immediatelyafter the solvent evaporates.

Avoid freezing. If bulk Dow Corning557 Silicone Dry Film Lubricantseparates due to freezing, heat thesolution to 32°C (90°F) and stir theproduct until the wax dissolves backinto solution. It should remain stableuntil frozen again or until excessivesolvent evaporation occurs.

Avoid unnecessary solvent loss, wherepossible, by closing open applicationsystems. When dipping, use thesmallest dip container appropriateto the volume of parts being coated.Keep containers closed unless dippingor removing product. Do not leavedip drums or tanks open overnightor between shifts.

In most dip operations, excessivesolvent loss is unavoidable and thesolvent must be replenished. Addingnaphtha alone will not suffice. Thesolvent component consists of 94 per-cent naphtha (41°C [105°F] flashpoint) mixed with methyl amylalcohol. This premix should be addedto the depleted product that has beenheated to 32°C (90°F) and stirred untilall wax solids have gone back intosolution. Methyl amyl alcohol can beadded up to 8 percent, but not lessthan 6 percent of the solvent mixture.

The amount of premix solvent to beadded can be determined throughexperience or by conducting a percentsolids test by weighing a well-mixed3-g (0.1-oz) sample, heating to 105°C(221°F) for 20 minutes and weighingthe remaining wax at room tempera-ture. When adding solvent, strive forno more than 8 percent wax solidsunless a thicker film is desired thanprovided by the standard formulation.

This rejuvenation process should workthree to four times after which the usedmaterial should be replaced with freshproduct.

Removal of FilmDow Corning 557 Silicone Dry FilmLubricant may be removed by mostsolvents or by vapor degreasing.


USABLE LIFE ANDSTORAGEWhen stored at or below 25°C (77°F),Dow Corning 557 Silicone Dry FilmLubricant has a shelf life of 60 monthsfrom date of manufacture. Refer to

DESCRIPTIONMolykote® D 10 Anti-Friction Coating is a specially formulated dispersion ofsolid lubricants in a solvent-based resinbinder. It is supplied as a thick liquidsuitable for screen-print applicationprocesses.

Once properly cured, it offers wearresistance with high load-carryingcapacity, as well as long-term resistanceto gasoline, motor oils, and solvents. It also offers excellent corrosion pro-tection. The coating is serviceable atoperating temperatures from -70° to380°C (-94° to 716°F).

TYPICAL APPLICATIONSMolykote D 10 Anti-Friction Coating is ideal as a long-term lubricating filmon pistons used in gasoline and dieselengines, compressors and pistonpumps, pneumatic and hydraulicsystems, and other applications thatrequire help to reduce piston andcylinder wall wear during break-in,cold-start, and ongoing operationsituations.

HOW TO USESubstrate PreparationThe surface to be coated must becompletely clean and free of greaseand oil.

How To ApplyMolykote D 10 Anti-Friction Coating is specially formulated and supplied for use in screen-print manufacturingprocesses. For optimum performance,the surface should be coated as evenlyas possible. A cured film thickness of 18 to 20 microns is recommended.It also can be applied by spray, dip,brush, tampon-print, and otherprocesses. Depending on the applica-tion process, further dilution using a solvent such as N-methylpyrrolidonemay be required. Please refer to thesolvent manufacturer’s safe handlinginformation prior to use. Stir wellbefore and during use.

CureSuggested cure times are 30 minutes at 180°C (356°F) or 60 to 120 minutesat 150°C (302°F). NOTE: Actualcuring times vary with substrate size,mass, and material; coating thickness;type of curing oven; and other factors.To assure proper cure and adhesion of the coating, specific tests can beperformed.

HOW TO USE

How to apply

Clean points of contact. Apply in same way as lubricating greases, using brush, spatula, grease-gun or automatic lubricating device. Suitable for delivery by central lubricating system. In the event of long breaks in service e.g. overnight, the pressure in the delivery equipment should be relieved. Not to be mixed with other greases.

Because of variation in quality of plastics and elastomers, compatibility tests should be carried out for swelling and shrinkage, stress-crack formation, and changes in strength and hardness.

Solubility

DOW CORNING High-Vacuum Grease is insoluble in water, methanol, ethanol, acetone, glycol and glycerine. It can be dispersed in kerosene, stoddard solvent, benzene, toluene, ethyl ether or petroleum ether.

Chemical resistance

DOW CORNING High-Vacuum Grease is unaffected by most vegetable and minerals oils, many organic compounds, and most common gases. It is also resistant to most aqueous solutions of inorganic salts and to dilute acids and alkalies. The suitability of DOW CORNING

High-Vacuum Grease should always be tested before the material is adopted for regular use.


In case of eye contact, flush eyes with water.

APPLICATIONS

� MOLYKOTE HP-870 Grease can be used broadly under harsh conditions such as

high temperatures, corrosive, solvent, liquefied natural gasses, high vacuum, etc.

� This grease is ideally used for use in clean rooms, semiconductor manufacturing

equipment, cardboard manufacturing equipment, hot air dryer motor axles, etc.,

where the evaporation of the lubricant could be problematic.

HOW TO USE

Clean points of contact. As is usual

with lubricating greases, apply or fill

by means of a brush, spatula, or

automatic lubrication device.


Although MOLYKOTE HP-870

Grease is extremely chemically stable,

it gradually begins to break down at

temperatures in excess of 250ºC

releasing a toxic gasses; be sure that

this product is only used in an

environment with adequate ventilation.

Do not smoke cigarettes if they have

been in contact with this product. Be

sure to wash your hands thoroughly

after working with this product.

Industrial Lubricants Molykote®

Gearbox and

Chain Oils

FEATURES

DESCRIPTION Molykote® gearbox and chain oils help

prevent wear and process interruptions

in power transmission systems and

components. Compared to conven-

tional oils, they also offer greater

resistance to oxidation and stable

performance at high temperatures and

under high loads. Molykote gearbox

oils maximize fill intervals and main-

tain viscosity characteristics at wide

temperature ranges.

HOW TO USE Follow equipment manufacturer’s

recommendations for maintenance

procedures and oil specifications.

To ensure the longest possible life

span for lubricating fluids, sample

analysis is recommended. When

utilized on a regular basis, sample

analysis can track normal aging and

depletion of antioxidants in lubricating

fluids. Moreover, sample analysis can

identify abnormal contamination that

may be limiting lubricant life. Contact

Dow Corning customer service for

additional information.

LISTINGS AND

SPECIFICATIONS

Molykote lubricating fluids are kosher

approved and conform to USDA list-

ing requirements under H-1 or H-2

designations (see Typical Properties

table). An H-1 designation indicates

the lubricated part can have incidental

food contact not to exceed 10 ppm. An

H-2 designation indicates the

lubricated part cannot have contact

with food.

Molykote gearbox and chain oils have

a shelf life of 60 months from date of

manufacture. Refer to product

packaging for use-by date.

PACKAGING Molykote gearbox and chain lubricants

are available in 18.9- and 208.2-L

(5- and 55-gal) containers.
