April showers bring MAY flowers... and Mother’s Day. Come in and treat yourself, you deserve it!

Spring is finally here! Yeah! With Spring comes beautiful weather. We can finally get out of the house without having to bundle up. Spring also

brings new stresses. In addition to the regular everyday busy-ness, add in the new sports schedules, spring concerts, scheduling summer camps and spring fever. The days are longer and that gives us more time to do do do. If I got a quarter for every time I heard my clients, colleagues, friends, and family members say “It’s too much, I just can’t do it all” I would be rich (or at least have my laundry paid for each week). “Doing-ness” has become an epidemic.

We are Human beings not human doings. What would your day look like if you were able to just “be” for just a short time each day? I am certain that if you were able to “just be” for even thirty minutes a day, you would feel more relaxed and centered. You find that life comes to you rather than having to chase life. Emptying the mind with thoughts of the past or the future opens you up to the present moment. You have the ability to focus on the now. Your loved ones, especially your children, will feel you present with them and they will feel appreciated. Mother’s Day is on May 8th this year and this is the

day where mothers are honored. Many families use this special day to celebrate by doing something special with their mothers. If you are a mother take this day to honor yourself and just be. Make this day about you. In honoring yourself you will be assured that you will receive exactly what you want. If you want flowers or chocolate, have them delivered to you. If you want something specific, don’t wait for it to be someone else’s idea, drop a strong request to your loved ones. If you feel that they will not be able to give that to you, then make it happen for yourself. Perhaps you want to send yourself a beautiful card. You will not be disappointed and anything else you receive from your loved ones will be bonus. Give yourself the gift to just be. Miracles happen around you when you show yourself the love and respect you deserve. Try it and see. I can promise you that you will not be disappointed.

Just because your child hates getting a haircut, doesn’t mean it has to be a battle between the two of you. Many kids dislike haircuts because they’ve had

a bad experience in the past. But, that doesn’t mean every haircut has to be a

challenge. Because most kids find it hard to stay still, here are a few things you can do to make the experience better:

• Pick a kid-friendly place. Some salonsand barbershops don't like kids.• Because many kids find it hard to sit

still, find a barber/stylist who knows how to deal with kids.• Take them to the shop before their

haircut so they know what to expect.• Let the barber/stylist be the boss. Do

what he or she says.• Don’t tell them it won’t hurt, or that it

won’t take long because they'll start to worry and put their guard up.• Avoid the word cut as this may be

scary. Use the word trim or style instead. • Pick a shop that has a distraction

such as a kids car to entertain your child.• Brink a drink or snacks in case your

child gets fidgety. • Put a video or game that your child

likes on your smartphone to distract them if they get fidgety.• Bring a change of clothes with you in

case your child won't wear the cape.• Go to the same stylist. Things will get

better as time goes on.

Another way to reduce the stress of your child’s haircut is to turn up at a quiet time. Because children’s moods can change quickly, shops that don’t require appointments are a great option as you can just turn up when they are happy.Good stylists and barbers will work with

you and your child. They will explain what is happening to our child and let them touch the equipment to feel at ease. Make sure you and your child feel

comfortable with your choice as your child be be getting haircuts for many years to come. A bad experience will make it harder to convince them that they need a haircut in the future.

Parents have many different roles and responsibilities when it comes to raising children. Too often overlooked is the importance of modeling for your

children what a healthy relationship looks like. Parents are so caught up in arranging a world that is in orbit around their children's schedules, that they miss one of the most important lessons of parenting. It is healthy to show your children that you and your spouse love each other and the life you have together, that is separate from them. A parent’s imperative is to raise children to feel safe and independent so that they grow up, go off into the world and have their own relationships and create their own families. If children believe that their parents’ only happiness is directly dependent upon them, it can interfere in their separation process. Our healthy relationships teach our children how to become loving partners, how to disagree without animosity, and how to sustain love through the marathon of marriage. When you greet your partner at the end of the day, give

each other a kiss before giving your child a kiss. Hugging your partner, dancing in the kitchen, laughing together all show your children that you have an intimate connection with your partner. Even if it makes your kids a bit jealous, or a bit embarrassed, the ultimate lesson is a positive one. The concepts of the oedipal complex or electra complex are the battles that your children need to lose. Children often go through a stage where they seem to be in love with their parents; little children talk about wanting to marry their parents, older children sometimes believe that they know how to take better care of their parent than the other parent. Making sure your children see a romantic, loving, commitment is healthy way to secure their independent, emotional development. Many parents believe that you shouldn’t fight in front of

your children. However it is actually better to show your children how to argue effectively and demonstrate that not agreeing doesn’t mean you don’t love each other.

Of course it is better not to yell in front of your kids, but if it happens once in a while don’t over think it. Losing control is something else; raging or being physical is never acceptable. Children experience anger and frustration, just as their parents do, if you don’t show them that these are normal feelings, they could grow up feeling more confused about their own emotions. However, be mindful to protect them from issues that could raise their anxiety. Seeing you kiss and hug after an argument demonstrates that it is safe to have your feelings without losing love.Taking time to go out without your children is very

important for your relationship, as well as your children’s understanding of the need to nurture and tend to your love. Date night, weekend get-aways, even watching a grown-up movie in bed together all convey that your life, your love, your interests are worthy, necessary, and happy parts of your life. Single parents should not feel badly to take the time to date. Even if your kids have trouble initially accepting you with a new partner, they will ultimately worry less about you if they believe you have a companion in your life. You don’t have to share all the details of your dating experience with your kids, but it is okay to let them know that you are interested in having romance in your life. Having children is a blessing, but childrearing is a long

and consuming journey. Accepting that the health of your relationship with your partner is part of the process of teaching your children well will help create balance and harmony in your household. Don't feel guilty for taking the time to show love and understanding to your partner, since that is actually a way of giving to your children too.

Your Neighborhood Martial Art’s Instructor,

Renshi Adam McCauley, Go No Sen Karate,

Catherine Anesi, LCSW specializes in helping people transform their lives.

In life, not every day will be a party. There will be lousydays, and then there will be really bad days. Waking up

with a big zit on your wedding day, winning the lottery but your dog soiled the ticket, bringing the wrong presentation materials on the day of your most important client meeting, or ripping your pants during performance day — these things happen, and not just to some, but to everyone. Some people just know how to handle such misfortunes better than others. They know how to nonchalantly shrug off a disaster and move on without qualms. How?When a series of unfortunate events strikes, what do you

do to end the string of bad luck? It’s pretty simple really. Take a deep breath, turn on your positive button, and do the following:• Stay on course and focus on your goal. Missed the bus

to work? Take the next step and grab a cab. Got a D on your school project? Your goal is to graduate, so hit the books and make up for it by acing your finals. Don’t let a little obstacle sway you away from your ultimate goal. No matter how many times you miss the target, there’s no rule in life that limits you from trying again and again. Those who keep trying always conquer in the end. I always tell my students the 7 words to keep in mind. They are: Never Give Up, Never, Never Give up!• Focus on the positive and count your blessings. Heavy

rains getting you down? Remember that rain nourishes the trees, plants, and flowers. Down with the flu? Take this rare time to slow down from your hectic schedule, focus on your health, and finish reading that book that’s been lying on your bedside table for months. Be thankful for every little thing, because there’s always something good in things that you used to perceive negatively.• Believe that there’s always a way to turn things around

for the better. Everything has a solution! Instead of

constantly complaining about how bad things are, allow your creativity to flourish amidst the black waters of misfortune. Take it as a personal challenge to make things better and improve your problem-solving skills. • Stay fit and healthy. If you’re wondering what physical

health has to do with luck, the answer is that it lowers the risk of encountering misfortunes. If you’re clumsy, moody, irritable, weak, and not at your best, chances are, things don’t always go the way you planned them to be. But if you’re active, alert, and always at the top of your game, then your chances of failure are lessened. And even when you do encounter obstacles, you can easily resolve it because you are at your best.• Focus on the now. Stop dwelling on past mistakes and

bad experiences. Stop connecting those negative things to the present, and instead, accept where you are at the moment. If you think you cannot do accounting work today because you failed math in college, well, think again. Some of today’s millionaires never even went to college but are now mentally counting their revenues on a daily basis. Your past doesn’t define what you can do today. You need to focus on the now and believe in the things you can do today.• Be consistent and just do it. Bad days and experiences

can very easily diminish your motivation to reach for your goal. But if you have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, it is very easy to get back on track. Set realistic

goals and just do it.

On March 8, we observe International Women’s Day, a celebration of women’s economic, political and social achievements. Yet women still face

challenges, such as the ability to gain the financial resources needed for a comfortable retirement. If you’re a woman, what steps should you take to make progress toward this goal? For starters, contribute as much as you can afford each

year to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. When you salary goes up, boost your contributions to these plans. And consider growth-oriented investments in your retirement accounts. Here’s another tip: If you are married,

talk to your spouse about Social Security. If you become a widow, you could receive survivor benefits, but they will be reduced if your spouse started to take Social Security before full retirement age. Also, have your spouse consider maintaining a life insurance policy with you as the beneficiary. By making these and other moves,

you can help yourself move toward the financial security you deserve.

May is the month I get inspired by the season to grow my own spring pantry. One of the many benefits is being able to step outside my kitchen

and harvest edible herbs to enhance my culinary creations. Herbs are packed with essential vitamins and nutrients to use for more than just cooking. Many herbs can serve as a kitchen pharmacy to treat common ailments too.Herbs contain medicinal cancer fighting anti-oxidants

and flavonoids that support the immune system which offer a wide array of health benefits. Some of my favorites are basil, which aids in digestion and circulation; chives and arugula, which promote bone health due to their high levels of vitamin K; mint for soothing digestion and calming effects; and parsley for it’s detoxing and cleansing properties. Using freshly harvested herbs in your recipes will add

delicious flavor to your plate and expand your palette without the extra calories. You may even find these herbs

substitute the need for adding salt and sugar.Whether it’s a salad,

homemade dressing or adding herbs to a cup of tea, the thrill of harvesting your own food will always delight. Culinary herbs are easy to grow, gentle on the budget and big on flavor.May 8th is Mothers Day.

Give the gift that keeps on growing, both fragrant and utilitarian too. Take a large basket and simply fill it with herb plants like rosemary, peppermint, sage and basil. Top it off with a trowel and bow. It’s the gift that keeps on giving and a daily

reminder of how much she means to you. Experiment using your favorite herbs to create a

marinade to enhance the flavor of your favorite protein and vegetables or try my cilantro marinade.

Cilantro Herb MarinadeIngredients:• 3 tablespoons lime juice• 2 tablespoons EVOO• 1 tablespoon minced shallots• 1 tablespoon cilantro, minced• 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Directions:• In a mini food processor, combine shallots, cilantro, Dijonand lime juice.• Slowly add in EVOO.• Sea salt and pepper to taste.

When my boys were little we would always celebrate their birthdays by starting the day with breakfast in bed. Once they got a little older,

they loved the idea of returning the favor for my birthday and for Mother's Day. It was never anything very fancy - just homemade goodness. It was a time for all of us to crawl into our big bed and spend a few minutes together and it always felt special because we never allowed the boys to eat in their rooms so it was a real treat to be able to eat a full meal in bed. The greatest part about breakfast in bed is that is more

the idea of it and the ritual than it is the actual food being eaten. Little kids can help make and butter toast, they can crack the eggs and set up the trays with napkins and utensils. Let them pour the juice into the glasses. Just something as simple as a cup of tea and toast and eggs is more than enough to make anyone feel special. Add to that a tiny jar with a dandelion picked from the yard and it is the perfect start to the day. If you have a little extra time and you want something

yummy that the kids can say they baked themselves, I suggest baked french toast. It is something you can prepare the night before and your kids can pop it into the oven the morning of Mother's Day and feel like they made it! Delicious and easy!

Baked French Toast

One loaf of stale bread cut into cubes3 eggs, beaten1 1/2 cups milk or half and half or a combination of both1/3 cup brown sugar1/3 cup white sugar1 teaspoon vanilla extract1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Mix all ingredients together in a big bowl and pour into a 9x13 pan. Cover pan with foil and store in the refrigerator overnight. The next morning, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Put pan in oven and bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven and let it sit out while you prepare the dishes and drinks. Cut into squares and dust with confectioners sugar or drizzle with real maple syrup. It is by far my favorite breakfast! Enjoy!

Stay Sweet! Susan

Rosy Grapefruit Sorbet Sugar tames the tartness of the grapefruit in this

refreshing palate-cleansing sorbet. With only two essential ingredients, it is a breeze to make. (You’ll need an ice cream maker.) Should you come across a sorbet recipe with water added to the juice, drop it immediately from your browsing. A sorbet must be intense with fruit flavor and there should be no watering down.Ingredients (Makes about a quart)4 large Ruby Red grapefruits

¾ cup granulated sugar 2 T grapefruit vodka* 2 T Campari bitters**Directions

1. Squeeze juice from grapefruits. Strain. Youshould have about 3 cups of juice (If you have more, add more sugar accordingly.) 2. In a small saucepan mix sugar with ½ cup of juice. Heatand stir just until sugar is dissolved.3. Cool and add to remainder ofjuice. Stir in vodka and bitters. 4. Chill in refrigerator overnight or until cold.5. Prepare in ice cream machine according tomanufacturer’s directions. This should take about 20 minutes.6. Scoop into a container with a tight-fitting lid and place infreezer. The vodka will prevent the sorbet from freezing

hard. It’s not essential if you’re going to eat it the same day, but otherwise highly recommended. Campari marries well with the grapefruit flavor, slows down the hardening and gives the sorbet a lovely rosy color. You can, of course, use unflavored vodka, but I always look for ways to intensify flavor.

Fresh Orange Sorbet Here is a delightful icy refreshment for a sultry (or any

other) day . . . and soooo easy to make. It requires an ice cream maker.Ingredients (Makes 6 servings)1 cup water½ cup sugar2 cups fresh orange juice

ProcedureMake a sugar syrup by bringing water and sugar to a

boil in a small sauce pan. Keep it at a slow simmer for 20 minutes. Take off heat and let cool. Add orange juice. Taste for sweetness. Refrigerate until chilled. Make your sorbet according to the manufacturer’s instructions for your ice cream maker. For a decorative twist you can create frozen orange cups

from oranges cut in half. Gently scoop out the contents, removing all the pulp. Place in the freezer for about an hour until the orange halves are frozen. When sorbet is ready, scoop into orange cups, garnish

with fruit and serve.

Empowering Women World Wide, the ad hoc interfaith coalition of Northern Westchester women, is holding a community forum on Tuesday, May

10th at 7:00 PM, at Temple Israel of Northern Westchester (31 Glengary Road, Croton-on-Hudson, NY) to learn about the Syrian refugee crisis, the global response, and what we can do locally to help. We will also assemble school kits to be distributed to children in need world-wide. The coalition includes women from Temple Israel of Northern Westchester, Asbury United Methodist Church, St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Hudson Valley in Croton, and the Upper Westchester Muslim Society in Thornwood. We are facing the most pressing refugee crisis since

World War II, with millions of refugees worldwide. In Syria, anti-government protests have led to ongoing civil war since 2011, causing about 13.5 million people to flee from their homes. Reports on the casualties estimate that one million people have been wounded. The New York Times reported in February that 470,000 people have been killed. In March, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), an opposition group based in England, reported the deaths of more than 13,000 children and 8,000 women in the conflict. The United Nations Refugee Agency wrote, “by the end

of 2014, Syria had become the world’s top source country of refugees, . . .with 95% located in surrounding countries.” These include: Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. We’ve all seen horrifying pictures of their plight in refugee camps, and of those attempting to cross the Mediterranean seeking refuge in Europe. 75% of the Syrian refugees are women and children. Speakers will address the Syrian refugee crisis--with

attention to women and children refugees, the impact of the crisis on the countries to and through which the refugees are fleeing, and the global (including that of the United States) response. Local action we can take to respond will also be addressed. Following the program those who wish will remain to

assemble school kits, which will be distributed by the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to refugee children in need. The speakers and program include:~Rabbi Rachel Grant Meyer: Community Engagement,

Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) ~Sana Mustafa: a Syrian activist who was granted political

asylum in the U.S. During the week of our program Sana will celebrate her graduation from Bard College.~ Local clergy and leaders will speak about action to

inform our community about the Syrian refugee crisis, UMCOR’s distribution of resources where needed, ways to help immigration agencies, urging our legislators to respond to the crisis, and a call to action. For more information, please send an e-mail to

• Talk with your parents about what they want! Do they want to stay in their home no matter what? Do they prefer a senior environment such as assisted living? At some future point, they may not be able to tell you and you want to know what they would have wanted you to do.• Talk to them about Advanced Directives. Do they want

to be resuscitated, do they want artificial feeding etc. This is always a tough discussion but one that really needs to be done. • Get a Health Care Proxy in place which specifically

states their wishes. Help them to appoint the child ablest to follow through with their wishes. Don’t feel offended if they choose your brother or sister over you as health care proxy. All that matters is someone they love is going to follow the wishes they have put forward. • Make sure you have a Power of Attorney and

more importantly, make sure that power of attorney is comprehensive! It is best if you see an elder attorney. An inadequate Power of Attorney can cause great problems down the line. Even worse, no Power of Attorney can lead

to guardianship and high legal fees. • Learn about resources for the Aging. Meet with a

Geriatric Care Manager or an Aging specialist to become knowledgeable about the options before you need them. Options such as Home Delivered meal services, online food shopping, Adult Day Care, Home Care, Assistive Technology, Assisted Living and Nursing homes all cost money and planning can help reduce the “pinch”. • Be involved with their medical care. You may not need

to go to appointments yet, but you should know who their Medical Doctors are and make sure you have a HIPPA release for all of them. • Make sure you know where their Will is and DON’T place

it in their safe deposit box if you do not have access.• Get them to make a list of all their financial information

(ie; where they have accounts, life insurance, stocks and bonds especially if they are still paper, etc). They don’t have to hand that information to you. Just ask them to compile a list and put it in a safe place – one you know about and can access if needed.• Find out if they have Long Term Care Insurance. If they

do, understand the plan benefits so you will be prepared
