Philip Johnson, architect and former Dir ector of the Departmentof Architecture and Design, T h e Museum of Modern Ar t; inassociation with Mark Wigley, architect and lecturer at PrincetonUniversity; coordinated by Frederieke Taylor.
This is the third of five architectural exhibitions in theMuseum's GERALD D . HINES INTERESTS ARCHIT ECTURE PROGRAM.
Conceived to examine current developm ents in architecture, theprogram includes the publicatio n of catalogues to accompany theexhibitions, as well as lectures and symposia.
DECONSTRUCTIVIST ARCHITECTURE focuses on seven int ernational
architects whose recent work marks the emergence of a newsensibility in architecture. T he architects recognize t h eimperfectibility of the modern world and seek to address, inJohnson's words, the pleasures of unease. Obsessed with
diagonals, arcs, and warped planes, they intentionally violate
the cubes and right an gles of modernism. Their projects continue
the experimentation with structure initiated by the RussianConstructivists, but the goal of perfection of the 1920s 1s
subverted. T h e traditional virtues of harmony, unity, andclarity are displaced by disharmony , fracturing, and mystery.
The exhibition includes drawings , mode ls, and site plans forrecent projects by Coop Himmelblau, Peter Eisenman, Frank Ge hry,
Zaha M . Hadld, Rem Kool haas , Daniel Libeskind, and BernardTschumi (11st of projects attached). Their works are preceded byan Introductory section of Constructivist paintings andsculptures drawn from the Museum's collection.
