Team work makes grade 1 and Kindergarten smile in Wellness!
First grade has been working hard. Here are some pic-
tures of our math fluency "sprints", students working
on building reading stamina during Read to Self, and a
picture of letter writing practice during phonics.
All the classes have come together in their own mingas (communities that work together to build relationships and help one another through their work and play together). They have begun to learn a little bit about the culture of the Andean Native Americans of Ecuador and Peru, both pre-inka and Inka. Several classes are following the Inka rules that ruled the Inka Empire for over 100 years, “Don’t steal, Don’t lie, Don’t be lazy.” They have learned them in the Kichwa language. All classes are reviewing material from last year through songs, poems, and games.
The elementary and intermediate classes will be learning family vocabulary through their classroom mascots, Carlita and Car-los. You will find the photos from their trip to the Andes with Senora Goodman this summer through a power point presenta-tion they have given the class as well as on the bulletin board in the main hallway. (They also brought back some family members from Peru).
The fifth grade class will be experiencing inquiry-based learning through the Ecua-dorian and Peruvian artifacts that have come back with Senora Goodman from her trip to the Andes. They will begin to study world cultures, mapping, and mak-ing comparisons between our own cul-tures and the Spanish speaking world.
Middle school will be studying the Inka
culture in 8th grade through independent
projects and the Aztec culture in 7th
grade through artifacts and hieroglyphs.
The 6th grade will begin by creating con-
versational puppets to practice introduc-
tory dialogues.
News from the Guidance Office As I’m sure you know, bullying can be a serious issue in schools, and is one that we work hard to educate students about at Marlborough School. Sometimes stu-dents are quick to label any negative interaction with a friend as bullying, when it may have been more of a misunderstanding or a conflict that could be worked out. In classroom guidance, we are reviewing the definition of bullying and learning the differences between unkind be-havior and bullying.
In 4th grade students have been studying energy and its relation to
speed. They were challenged to make a bumper coaster that would
not enter the swamp of alligators! They used foam tubing as the
track, marbles for the coasters, and a cup at the end to signify the
alligator. They soon discovered that the higher you begin your
coaster the more energy it has and therefore it was gobbled up by the
alligator. They learned that more energy = more speed and that ener-
gy can be transferred from object to another.
Grade six is being introduced to Literary Ele-ments and Narrative Structure terms. Grade seven has just started their class novel The Ransom of Mercy Carter . Grade eight students are working together in researching some of our great US Landmarks. Our AHT students are paired up with those who stayed here, and to-gether they will give presentations to their class-mates about the history and symbolism of these landmarks.
Middle School Language Arts News from
Mrs. Beaudin
We are off to a great start in Language Arts for grades six, seven, and eight. The students in all three grades have already read several reading selections and composed two com-plete essays. This is in addition to journal writ-ing, grammar work, and vocabulary. If you are upstairs, be sure to come by the Language Arts bulletin boards to see some of their work.
The second graders working on read to self and read to someone.
We are working to build our stamina as independent readers!
First grade has been
practicing all the
ways to make 10!
Today we practiced

Grade five is studying Earth's systems. Here the students
