It gives me great pleasure to present toyou the 2012 Momentum for ChangeLighthouse Activities. This year’s activitiesfall under the Urban Poor pillar of Momentum for Change, which has been generously funded by the Bill & MelindaGates Foundation. They consist of mitigation and adaptation activities thatare a result of collaborative efforts betweenthe public and private sectors and bringmultiple benefits to the urban poor in developing countries.
In showcasing these activities we are providing a public platform to highlightbroad-ranging climate change actionsthat are already achieving tangible resultson the ground. By shining light on inspiringand transformational mitigation and
adaptation activities, Momentum forChange aims to strengthen motivation, spur innovation and catalyze furtherchange towards a low-emission, high resilient future.
I hope these activities inspire you to commit to further action to address climatechange. Let’s all do our part to build Momentum for Change.

Adaptation to Coastal Erosion in VulnerableAreas, is a coastal protection activity implemented in Senegal by the Centre deSuivi Ecologique (CSE). The activity aimsto protect the coastal areas of Rufisque,Saly and Joal – all just outside Senegal’scapital Dakar – against further erosionbrought on by sea level rise and stormsurges.
The activity is one of the first of its type toreceive funding from the Adaptation Fund, which finances projects and programmesthat help developing countries to adaptto the negative effects of climate change.
Started in January 2011, the activity aimsto reduce exposure to climate change impacts on the coast, by protecting housesand coastal infrastructure – such as fishing docks, fish processing plants andeven tourism – that are threatened byerosion and salt-water intrusion. Some ofthe measures introduced by the activityinclude anti-salt dikes to mitigatesalination of agricultural lands and sea defenses to prevent coastal erosion. The activity also incorporates development of coastal management policies and regulations.

The Ahmedabad Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) is an affordable and climate-friendly way for the citizens of Ahmedabadto reach their destinations in the shortesttime possible. Going by the name “Janmarg”or “the people’s way”, the BRTS beganoperation in October 2009, and hasgrown from 12 kilometres of route to 45kilometres and growing.
Passenger numbers have also increased, from 18,000 to almost 130,000. Some ofthe climate-friendly and accessibility-friendly features of the system includespecially designed buses with right handside doors and a match between the busfloor and the platform height at each station, a complete revamp of the roadright-of-way to include cycle tracks andpedestrian facilities, and a commercialspeed of 25 km/h, enabling faster commuting. The activity has become thebackbone of public transit in the city.

Access to clean drinking water is a problemin many parts of Africa, and its purificationcan also be a problem for the environment.Dirty water often must be boiled, requiringfuel from unsustainable and costly sources, like wood or kerosene. In Kenya, LifeStraw®
Carbon For Water™, has found a methodto combat this.
LifeStraw® is an easy-to-set-up and maintain water purification system thatuses no fuel. Each filter can produce at
least 18,000 liters of quality drinkingwater over a 10-year life span. The individuals who have received this familyfilter no longer need to treat water by boiling it using wood fuel – a traditionalnecessity that releases greenhouse gases.
Financing from carbon credits earnedfrom the voluntary carbon market pay for the running of the activity. In this way,the activity also shows the viability of carbon market-financed projects in Africa.

The Guangzhou Bus Rapid Transit System(BRTS) is the first metro replacement-leveltransportation system outside of SouthAmerica. It includes a range of innovativefeatures such as the first high capacityBRTS worldwide to operate direct serviceroutes; no bus terminals or interchanges;and usage of mainly 12-meter buses.
It is the first BRTS in China and has someof the highest bus flows, with one bus coming every ten seconds into the cityduring morning rush hours.
Guangzhou is also the first BRTS with abike-sharing system along its corridor. The bike-sharing system has 5,000 bikesand 109 bike-share stations. More thantwo-thirds of the bike-share users previouslymade the same trip using motorizedtransport, showing a saving of CO2 impactfor the decrease in such journeys.

This activity, spearheaded by the LankaElectric Vehicle Association (LEVA) (withsupport from the United Nations Development Programme’s Small Grantsprogramme) has helped to demonstratethe viability of and paved the way for thecommercial introduction of electric andhybrid vehicles on the streets of Sri Lanka’scapital, Colombo.
Starting with advocacy work, where LEVAsuccessfully lobbied for government support for electric vehicles (includinglower tariffs for importing parts), the activity has helped to introduce electricrickshaws and hybrid buses into the city’stransport mix. The activity also trainsunemployed young people to operateand maintain these electric and hybridvehicles, and has promoted a public awareness campaign on the benefits ofgoing electric to reduce pollution.

Organic waste composting in Nepal aims to process organic waste and turn it intocompost that can be used by the localcommunity in Kathmandu. Developed bythe private company Biocomp Nepal incooperation with the non-profit foundationmyclimate, this activity reduces, throughcomposting, emissions otherwise causedby traditional landfills.
Organic waste accounts for almost 70 percent of garbage collected in Kathmandu. The composting plant collects waste fromvegetable markets to produce the compostover a four-month period. Through composting, landfill space is freed andthe resulting product is sold to farmers inthe valley as a soil improver.

In Latin America, artisanal brick makersuse fuel that has a high environmentalimpact in kilns with low energy efficiency.Wood, tires and plastics all find their wayfor use as fuels in the brick-firing process, contributing to air pollution, deforestationand adversely affecting the health of peoplewho live nearby.
Energy Efficiency in Artisanal Brick Kilnsin Latin America (EELA) aims to reducethe carbon footprint of traditional brick
making, while at the same time improvingthe businesses of local artisans. EELA teaches brick makers how to use energyefficient brick kilns, and how to use better, cleaner fuels to fire bricks, helping to create a better product for theirmarket. The activity also works with thebrick makers on business skills, trainingthem in product improvement as well asbetter enterprise management.

The goal of this community-based adaptation activity is to pilot the implementation of six coping strategiesto climate change vulnerability in severallocal communities. The activity, implemented by Creative EnterpreneursSolutions, Ergonomidesign and the UNDevelopment Programme among others, aims to show that these coping strategiescan be duplicated on a large scale to communities in similar situations. Thestrategies include use of energy-efficientstoves, agro-forestry and vegetable production under micro drip. For example,
the use of EzyStove, a locally-producedenergy-efficient wood-burning stove, provides a solution for the problem ofcooking over an open fire. It reducesharmful smoke, decreases deforestation, creates local jobs and drastically reducescarbon dioxide emissions.
This holistic, community-based activity is a response to local concerns overalarmingly high rates of deforestationand increasing respiratory illnesses dueto the widespread practice of cookingover open fires.
