SEPT - DEC 2005

All staff of CIMA Malaysia Division and Ms Christina Ho from CIMA Singapore spent 17 September 2005 at Sheraton Subang Hotel in Petaling Jaya taking part in a workshop on ‘CIMA Values’ led by Ms Ross Kamaruddin, Head of Business Development. The group was divided into five teams with one team leading the discussion for each CIMA Value. In each instance, they discussed the definitions and presented examples of Value Victories and Violations in creative ways. They then moved on to exploring each of the Values in detail to define an action plan which would embed the values in their daily work in the office. At the end of the workshop, Ms Sopiah Suid, Divisional Director of CIMA Malaysia Division, awarded prizes to employees who were seen to represent best each of the values on a daily basis. The winners were Mr Ronnie Wong (Accountability), Ms Vicky Paul and Ms Saraswathy Sithamparanathan (Customer Focused), Ms Tan Chiew Ann (Innovative), Ms Chan Siew Lian (Professional) and Ms Karen Yeap (Open).

Instilling CIMA Values

CIMA is pleased to welcome Ms Tam Kam Peng as its new Head of Learning Partnerships, effective October 2005.

This new and exciting post within the Education Directorate means that Ms Tam will have global responsibility for strengthening both existing links with learning partners and building new learning partnerships in CIMA’s developing markets.

In another first, Ms Tam is based at CIMA Malaysia Division in Kuala Lumpur but reports directly to CIMA’s Director of Education, Mr Robert Jelly, in the UK. Commenting on Ms Tam’s appointment, he said, “We are very excited that Ms Tam is joining the team. She has a proven track record of accounting education and training, especially in non-UK markets. One of her first tasks will be to visit the learning partners in the region. Ms Tam will be pivotal in ensuring closer working relationships that can only serve to improve the CIMA student learning experience in these key markets.”

The NAfMA Awards

(continued from page 1)

The NAfMA winners were assessed on eight criteria – leadership, management accounting information, resource management, customer / market focus, partnership management, value creation, business results and corporate social responsibility. These eight criteria are based on the management accounting concepts of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).

Chairman of the NAfMA Assessment Committee, Mr Michael Eow FCMA, said, “The most points were awarded for Value Creation and Business Results. Value creation represents the value that is derived from implementing successful management accounting practices. We also emphasised on business results in the assessment, focusing on key performance indicators, how they are measured and how management accounting practices have contributed to the profitability of the company.”

The awarding bodies for NAfMA are MIA and CIMA Malaysia Division. The working partners are CIMA-UiTM Asian Management Accounting Research Centre (AMARC) and National Productivity Corporation (NPC). NAfMA is supported by the Accountant General's Department of Malaysia, Bursa Malaysia, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers, British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce, the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry and SMI Association of Malaysia.

Types of awardThe NAfMA Excellence Award is the top award for the organisation with outstanding best practices in management accounting.

The NAfMA Best Practice Award is for the organisation that has best practices, focusing on fully implemented management accounting systems that set new standards or introduce innovations in the workplace. These systems have been benchmarked and tested, and outcomes have been carefully measured, evaluated and documented. Best Practices will generally have broad impact and applicability within a particular organisation.

The NAfMA Practice Solution Award is for application of the most effective management accounting system, tool or technique that has had a positive impact on daily practice. This application may have led to quality or process improvement, improved efficiency, lowered costs, or otherwise addressed a particular problem in the workplace.

The guests at the NAfMA 2005 Presentation & Dinner

Mr Ian Christison FCMA had a memorable time during his visit to Malaysia. During his 10-day stay from 22 - 30 August 2005, he participated in various events including having a fun time with members and students.

The highlight of his visit was an evening spent with members and students at Zouk, a ‘hip and happening’ place in Kuala Lumpur. It was the first time ever that CIMA Malaysia Division held an event at Zouk. This is an unusual venue as it is a regular haunt for the young and ‘yuppies’ in Malaysia. This new approach to getting participation from the young members and students was the brainchild of the Division’s President, Mr Y C Lee FCMA. 170 CIMA members and students had a great night out, laughing to the antics of Logi & Monty, the comedians, and taking part in the games and lucky draws. The leaders of CIMA, Mr Christison FCMA, Mr Y C Lee FCMA and past presidents of CIMA Malaysia, led the way in dispelling the notion that accountants are ‘square’ and boring by actively participating in the games and burning the dance floor.

The charm and charisma of Mr Christison certainly had a great effect on ‘rescuing’ lapsed CIMA members. During a dinner targeted at selected lapsed members, five out of six members who attended the dinner re-instated their membership. One was a member who had lapsed for 20 years while two others had lapsed for 10 and 11 years respectively. The dinner was but one of the activities to promote the reinstatement scheme for lapsed members in Malaysia.

Another highlight of the President’s visit to Malaysia was the launch of the CIMA Corner at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang. Mr Christison presented a set of the CIMA Study System to Professor Dr Dato’ Daing Nasir Ibrahim, Dean of the School of Management at USM.

The other appointments during the President’s visit included a meeting with the Malaysia Divisional Council members, the face-to-face membership assessment, presentations on the CIMA Learning Scheme and a special briefing on elevation using the CV route.

Natural All The WayVegetarians are an ingenious lot when it comes to cooking. How else can they come up with dishes that are tasty and have the texture of meat?

The Nature’s Vegetarian Restaurant in Bangsar and Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur, offers an extensive selection of vegetarian dishes and a few “meat” varieties as well. This restaurant, decorated in traditional Chinese style, also caters for wedding dinners and birthdays.

Yam basket, Ginger Steam Fish and Taufoo, Peking Duck, Butter Fried Lotus and Golden Dragon Ball (Kam Si Sau Kau) are definitely the best choices to savour. The Ginger Steam Fish is quite ingeniously put together - slices of tofu interspersed with pieces of “fish” (soya skin or fu chuk) wrapped with seaweed and doused with blended ginger and soya bean paste. If you close your eyes and chewed, you would think you were really eating fish.

During breakfast, you can try their delicious vegetarian dim sum which is served only at the Bangsar outlet. A special discount of 10% awaits CIMA members who want to try the fine taste of healthy vegetarian dishes at the Nature’s Vegetarian Restaurant. Please use the coupon below to enjoy the discount.

Nature’s Vegetarian Restaurant is located at No 24, Jalan Telawi 3, Bangsar Baru, Bangsar and No. 6, Jalan 31/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur. For reservations, please call 03-2283 5523 (Bangsar) or 03-23001631 (Sri Hartamas). Dim Sums are served from 8am - 6pm while Ala Carte is available from 12pm - 10pm.

Former Enron Whistleblower Speaks on IntegrityAs a special guest of CIMA Malaysia Division, Ms Lynn Brewer, the former Enron whistleblower, attracted 250 participants to a seminar on “The Value of Integrity – Understanding the Hidden Value of Intangibles” held in Kuala Lumpur on the morning of 6 September 2005. The participants included leaders from the Malaysian business community and accounting professionals from various industrial sectors. Ms Brewer is currently the President of the Integrity Institute Inc, USA, which independently assesses and certifies corporate integrity at the request of organisations. During the seminar, Ms Brewer spoke about her three years working for Enron and how she discovered bank fraud, corrupt dealings, espionage and power price manipulation. She also explained the role of the Integrity Institute which is to examine non-financial indicators of companies and to give them a better understanding of their business. She said, “We want companies to understand what would happen if they allowed poor corporate governance to go on. If

they don’t change and end up becoming the next Enron, they will do it knowingly.” The Integrity Institute has identified 10 non-financial indicators that have direct impact on an organisation’s bottom line. The indicators are communications, compliance and ethics, corporate culture, earnings quality, environmental and social responsibility, executive compensation, governance, leadership, risk and stakeholder perceptions. She said that these measures also benefited consumers, allowing them to make informed decisions based on the integrity of the company. During the seminar, Ms Brewer was joined by her Associate, Mr Jonathan Lewis, Managing Director of Corporate Governance Accreditation (Pty) Ltd (CGA), Johannesburg, South Africa, who presented a paper on “Your Business Excellence Assurance”. In the afternoon of 6 September, Ms Brewer spoke at a Roundtable Forum on “Ethics & Integrity in the Business World - An International Agenda”. The forum was jointly organised by CIMA Malaysia Division and the Institute of Integrity Malaysia (IIM). About 75 participants attended this event which was held at the premises of IIM in Kuala Lumpur. The participants shared their experiences and thoughts on the value of integrity in businesses, how business performance hinged on good governance and integrity and that leaders should lead by example. The Malaysian media was also captivated by Ms Brewer’s presence in Kuala Lumpur and this was evident by the good turnout of the press at an interview organised by the Division on the day before the seminar. The media, including magazines such as Malaysian Business and Accountants Today, published several articles on the interview with Ms Brewer. Malaysia Airlines was the Official Airline for Lynn Brewer’s seminar while The Edge was the Official Business Weekly. The event was supported by the Malaysian Institute of Directors, Bursa Malaysia, the Malaysian Institute of Accountants and the Minority Shareholders Watchdog Group.

It was a grand Hawaiian-themed night where members of the CIMA Malaysia Toastmasters Club got together to celebrate the installation of their new president as well as the new line-up of Exco members. As the term of 2005/2006 begins under the leadership of its new President, Ms Sharmini Ariaratnam ACMA, the members are looking forward to bigger challenges and even greater achievements for the coming year.

Some of the Club’s current achievements include a membership growth of 30% since its inception in June 2003 and the attainment of the President Distinguished Club Award in 2004/2005. So far, the Club has produced six Competent Toastmasters (CTMs), one Advanced Toastmasters Bronze (ATMB) and three Competent Leaders (CL) which is a significant achievement over a short period of time. The CIMA Malaysia Toastmasters Club has also helped in the formation of the CIMA Johore Toastmasters Club and in the pipeline, is the formation of the CIMA Penang Toastmasters Club.

President of CIMA Malaysia Division, Mr Y C Lee FCMA, said, "The eloquence and the confidence demonstrated by the toastmaster members is one of the many important attributes that we would like our younger CIMA members to acquire as they continue to climb the corporate ladder."

On 2 September 2005, the committee members of the CIMA Penang Students Club and the Club’s advisors, Mr Albert Yeoh Pit Shing ACMA and Ms Loh Lay Eong ACMA, gathered at the Fusion Restaurant to celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival.

Both the advisors and staff of CIMA Penang Branch thanked the committee members for their support and commitment towards CIMA’s activities during the year. The committee members had also put in great effort in the progress of the CIMA Penang Students Club.

Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival

Proving once again that accountants are not sedentary people, nearly 40 CIMA students and members participated in the mass social event of the year in Penang – Starwalk 2005. The event was held on Sunday, 11 December 2005.

All the CIMA walkers had attended the Pre-Starwalk Walking Clinic two weekends earlier, and were already well-trained to do the correct stretching, breathing and walking techniques.

While completing the walk in the prescribed two hours was not a problem for most of the participants, it was more difficult to pull oneself up from bed in the wee hours of the morning, to be at the starting point, Penang International Sports Arena, by 6am. However difficult it was, all the CIMA walkers were there, and after the flag-off by the Penang Chief Minister at 7am, everyone pushed on hard to beat personal records. By 9 am, all the CIMA participants had completed the walk, thereby earning their Certificates of Participation.

During the Starwalk, there was also great entertainment provided, with national singing sensations filling up the time as the lucky draws and prize presentations went underway.

Congratulations to Mr Albert Yeoh Pit Shing ACMA who was appointed as the new President for CIMA Penang Branch in November 2005. Mr Yeoh took over the helm from Mr Danny Tan FCMA who had served for the last three years. A new committee was also elected to serve the 2005/2006 term of office.

The MIA AGM was held at the Kuala Lumpur Hilton and it was attended by 436 members.

NAC 2005 attracts a record number participantsThe Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) once again hosted its flagship annual event, the National Accountants Conference 2005 (NAC 2005). This year, the event registered more than 1,700 participants and marked another major milestone for the Institute.

The NAC is a platform for members of the accounting fraternity to network, exchange ideas and generally update themselves on issues relating to the profession. Significant progress in the development and betterment of the profession can be achieved by the implementation of some of the many ideas conceived and shared at this conference. It has served as an important avenue to assess the profession’s needs and adopt the best practices gained from this conference.

This year, the two-day conference which was held from 22 - 23 November 2005, at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur focused on the accounting profession’s perspective in ‘Accountants: Managers of Value’.

In conjunction with the event, both the MIA and the Malaysian Accountancy Research and Education Foundation (MAREF) presented the MIA-MAREF Outstanding Research Paper Awards (MORPA). It is the first time that MIA and MAREF are collaborating on a project of such nature to give due recognition to accountancy research which is cutting-edge and relevant in improving the practice of accountancy. By encouraging such outstanding practices, both organisations aimed to achieve excellence in accounting research initiatives.

In his keynote address during the opening ceremony, the Honourable Minister of Education, YB Dato’ Sri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, said that this year’s theme abstracts the role of accountants in a bold way, showing accountants awareness that they practise their well-established profession in changing circumstances, against a backdrop of new opportunities and challenges. “With all these challenges before you, it is therefore appropriate that you are examining anew the scope of your profession, emphasising your responsibility to the community, reiterating your commitment to professional integrity and making sure that the training of accountants is up-to-date. Accountants must now also be well-rounded professionals with strong managerial and communicative skills.” He also noted that members of MIA serve the country in many capacities. The range of occupations undertaken by accountants, or ex-accountants, is vast: from auditors and consultants to entrepreneurs, from restaurateurs to CEOs of public listed companies. “In all these capacities, accountants bring a common set of skills, an understanding of the importance of controls, safeguards and visibility; a sense of the role accountability plays in making possible that trust between people which is the basis of prosperity, good governance and peace,” he added.

The MIA president, En Abdul Rahim Abdul Hamid meanwhile, stated that catalysts such as globalisation and trade liberalisation bring on new challenges upon the accounting profession and the need of a common set of standards in accounting, auditing and ethics is an imperative. In this respect, it has always inspired the Institute to ensure that accounting professionals in Malaysia are on a level-playing ground as that of accounting professionals in other advanced countries.

CIMA Members Celebrate Their Success

CIMA graduates congratulating one another. CIMA Divisional Council members are seated in the front row, with Mr Aruna Alwis (6th fromleft) and Mr Robert Jelly (7th from left).

A total of 52 new Passed Finalists, Associates and Fellows of CIMA celebrated their achievement in a grand ceremony on 20 November 2005 at the Prince Hotel and Residence, Kuala Lumpur.

Together with families and loved ones, more than 200 people filled the ballroom to join in the joyous occasion. The event was made more memorable by the presence of Mr Robert Jelly, CIMA’s Director of Education, and Mr Aruna Alwis, Divisional Manager of CIMA Sri Lanka.

The Passed Finalists, Associates and Fellows received their scrolls from Mr Y C Lee FCMA, President of CIMA Malaysia Division. Mr Lee urged CIMA members to improve their soft skills in facing the current global challenges for accountants. He said, “The global challenges facing accountants today are numerous and it is important to have the right attitude towards self-development and to be motivated enough to learn new things. Technical skills alone are insufficient; they must be supplemented with soft skills as they add up to the competency of oneself. Develop your soft skills such as communication, leadership, analytical and inter-personal skills. These are crucial in ensuring that you are effective in your jobs and that will lead to greater success in your careers.”

Mr Lee also reminded CIMA members to remember the sacrifices made by their families and loved ones in their pursuit for success. He said, “In your journey to success, there are many who have lent a hand along the way and we must not forget them. They are the ones who gave their support unselfishly; who lent you a shoulder to lean on when the going got tough; who encouraged you when you felt like giving up.”

The CIMA Membership Graduation and Certificate Presentation Ceremony is an annual event held to celebrate the success of Passed Finalists, Associates and Fellows.
