As The World Turns: The Executive Director’s Musings

The Times They Are A Changing

Located in Scarborough, Momiji Health Care Society has always sought to support older Japanese Canadians everywhere. Momiji Seniors Housing residents have come from in and out-side of Ontario. Momiji@Home has supported clients in Etobicoke, Downsview and elsewhere. Our con-gregate dining program is delivered in Don Mills and Mississauga. Our out-reach worker goes to Hamilton to sup-port Japanese residents at Macassa Lodge there. In 2018 Momiji celebrated its 40th anniversary and four decades of service to the Japanese Canadian community.

Following the 2018 Ontario elec-tion, the new government is seeking to re-structure health services-deliv-ery. “Ontario Health Teams” being cre-ated to replace the Local Health Integration Networks represent a dif-ferent way of administering health services that emphasizes geographi-cally oriented care coordination and focuses on “local” populations. It will mean bundling together wide-ranging health service agencies. In Scarbor-ough the local population is diverse; service providers have disparate clien-tele; service beneficiaries do not nec-essarily reside locally – e.g. Japanese clients of Momiji hailing from across the GTA. Time will tell how things will turn out under this new approach.

These are uncertain times for health care in Ontario and for Momiji. We will work with the provincial gov-ernment, the City of Toronto, service partners and the community and en-gage all our stakeholders to chart the future path for Momiji. Caring for and supporting the well-being of older Japanese Canadians will continue to be our raison d'être.

Donor News Momiji Matters

Momiji was grateful to be invited to takepart in the Toronto NAJC’s 30th Anniver-sary Redress Gala in November at thebeautiful TIFF Bell Lightbox. The recep-tion, chaired by Toronto NAJC Boardmember Lynn Deutscher Kobayashi, hon-oured the many individuals in Torontoand Hamilton who took an active role inthe Redress campaign. Steps to achieveredress began in the forties with two legalchallenges but the campaign for Redresscame to fruition on September 22, 1988.This sold-out event was attended by over250 people of all ages to mark thismomentous occasion. Momiji’s volun-teers set up a beautiful Silent Auction andSale which was well received by theguests and raised almost $5,000.

At the Gala, the Toronto NAJC madea pledge to contribute $60,000 over threeyears to our multi-year Momiji Commu-nity Wellness Fund Campaign. A chequepresentation took place in January wherewe were presented with the first instal-ment. We are thankful to the Toronto

NAJC for their continued support. In January, we had the privilege of

welcoming Mr. Fumiaki Miyamoto, thePresident of The Mistui Canada Founda-tion to Momiji. At this time, Mr.Miyamoto presented Pam Waintraub,Chair of the Momiji Board and EricHong, Executive Director with a $5,000cheque. This brings Mitsui Canada Foun-dation’s donation total to an incredible$45,000 since 2011. Thank you for thisannual support!

This new fund will help address thewidening gap between the financial sup-port we receive – from funders, includingthe government and Momiji Foundation, money raised at our fundraising events, and general donations – and what the ac-tual costs are to serve an aging seniorpopulation. We will continue to share de-tails on this new fund in the coming edi-tions of Momiji Matters.

On Saturday, March 30th despite the lessthan stellar weather, we welcomed morethan 1,300 shoppers into our building forour annual Momiji Community Bazaar.Shoppers came from all across the GTAand beyond and as soon as the doorsopened, flocked to purchase deliciousJapanese food such as Manju, BentoBoxes, Sushi and Chow Mein. Once thefood purchases were made, shoppersmade their way through the variousdepartments such as Collectibles, Books,Gift Ware (formerly Pink Elephant),

Japanese Wares andJewellery lookingfor that special trea-sure. This year, there was a newdepartment – FabFinds – to peruse. As usual, a visit tothe Momiji Bazaarwould not be com-plete without stop-ping by the GarageSale, where an oth-erwise dull parkinggarage is turnedinto a festive areaand where the bestbargains can befound.

After all of that shopping, many ofour shoppers visited the Dining Roomwhere our popular Teishoku plate was asalways, a big hit. Our Pie Place offered anamazing selection of homemade pies. Forour shoppers who did not want traditionalJapanese food, there was a BBQ with avast offering of traditional Western cui-sine, but with a Japanese twist. Our guestswith a sweet tooth enjoyed the array ofbaked goods, thanks to our many talentedvolunteer bakers. Some of the bakedgoods, particularly the Kooky Kookies, were almost too nice to eat!

It takes hundreds and hundreds of vol-unteers, on the day of the Bazaar and inthe days, and months leading up to theevent to make this event a success, yearafter year. Thanks to the volunteers tire-less efforts, especially the Bazaar Com-mittee and Leads, the 2019 Bazaar wasour most successful to date, raising agross total of $46,000! Special thanks toChris Okawara, Mayumi Maemura andDawna Kobayashi, our Chairs for theirleadership and dedication to Momiji.

Government funding does not cover all operating costs so Momiji continues to rely on the generosity of donors and the community for help. Donations received from memorial and general gifts and the annual Christmas Campaign, as well as funds raised at events like the Bazaar and Bowlathon are critical to sustaining programs and services.

THERE ARE A NUMBER OF EVENTS PLANNED FOR THE NEXT FEW MONTHS:

The theme of Volunteer Canada’s 2019National Volunteer Week is “The Volun-teer Factor – Lifting Communities”. It’s atheme that certainly resonates here atMomiji, a community that was foundedby a small group of dedicated volunteersin 1978, and has kept volunteer engage-ment at the heart of its mission to supportseniors and their families ever since. Ledby a committed volunteer Board of Direc-tors, Momiji’s volunteers have broughttogether isolated seniors and built the

Momiji community from the ground up,developing and implementing the innova-tive mix of culturally-sensitive programsand services that have given our organi-zation such a strong reputation. More than40 years later, new generations of volun-teers now continue to give their timeevery day, all over the GTA and beyond,to support our seniors – seniors who arevery often past or current Momiji volun-teers themselves.

Momiji volunteers, you are truly an

inspiration. The work you have done forMomiji so unselfishly over so many yearshas built and nurtured and sustained ourcommunity, and your continued serviceand dedication will shape Momiji’sfuture. Your passion to enrich the qualityof life for each and every senior we serve, through so many different programs andevents and initiatives and smiles, haslifted our community up in remarkableways and made us one of the shining suc-cess stories in elder care in a multiculturalcity. This is Momiji’s Volunteer Factor. For all that you do, and have done overthe years – a heartfelt arigato!

Momiji’s Seniors Active Living Centre(SALC) offers Momiji tenants and seniorsliving in the community numerous activ-ities and services. While most of the pro-grams are onsite at Momiji, there aresome outings within the GTA. The pro-gram’s objective is to reduce isolation, aswell as promote and maintain health,well-being, safety and independence.

Some of the SALC programs offered onlyhappen once a year however, most pro-grams are offered weekly, bi-weekly ormonthly. Momiji Club is a weekly pro-gram that gives participants a hands-onexperience. Seniors meet every Tuesdayfrom 10 am to 11:30 am in the SALC.Although there is a core group of just over30 seniors, who are predominantly

female, we encourage and welcome newmembers.

If you love crafts, this is the programfor you! In the past, birthday cards, origami art, seasonal ornaments, broochesand necklaces have been made. The fin-ished product is either given out at themonthly Lug-a-Mug for the birthday cel-ebrants or people take home the finishedproduct. If you don’t like crafts, somemembers play cards, do word puzzles orcolour.

Yukie Beasley, our SALC Coordina-tor says, “I believe that meeting regularlyeach week and seeing familiar faces helpseniors build a sense of belonging andcomfort – just like a little family.” If youare a senior, or if you know a senior whowould be interested, please contact Yukieat 416.261.6683, ext. 248.

All Things MomijiIn November Michael Doi, a member ofMomiji’s Board of Directors, wasappointed a judge of the Ontario SuperiorCourt of Justice in Brampton. He was for-merly the Legal Director with the Min-istry of the Attorney General.

Michael joined the Momiji Board in2012 and most recently, was the ViceChair. He was a generous supporter andregularly volunteered at our FundraisingBowlathon selling raffle tickets. Unfortu-nately, this new position prevents himfrom participating on a Board of Directorsso Michael immediately retired from theBoard.

Congratulations Michael! YourMomiji family wishes you all the verybest in your new career.

In April, the Honourable Filomena Tassi, the Federal Minister for Seniors Affairs andJohn McKay, our local MP visited Momiji. They were given a tour of Momiji by PamWaintraub, our Board of Directors Chair, Eric Hong, our Executive Director and LeeMixon, Community Services Manager. During the tour, the Minsters spent time speak-ing with our tenants and visited the Japanese ink painting class where they observeda demonstration by the instructor.

Near the end of June, Momiji’s Board ofDirectors, staff and other key stakeholderswill be meeting to formulate a new Strate-gic Plan. This plan will cover 2020 to2025. In preparation of this, Momiji is

consulting with its friends, neighboursand other interested parties and we wouldwelcome your thoughts. Please fill out theenclosed short questionnaire about howMomiji as an organization appears to youand what you think it might do over thenext five years as service provider.

STRATEGIC PLANNING SURVEY

Since our last edition of Momiji Matters,we have said farewell and good luck totwo of our Support Services staff mem-bers.

Yukie Otsubo began her 15 yearcareer at Momiji in 2004 as a PersonalSupport Worker. She worked her way upto Support Services Manager and over-saw the department. As Yuka Okada’sright hand person, they worked hand inhand together over the years and made awonderful team. Her dedication and com-passion to Momiji and the seniors ismissed.

Hyosook Kim was Momiji’s Commu-nity Programs Worker at Castleview-Wychwood Towers. She started workingpart-time in early 2015. In late 2016, shewas promoted to Service Coordinator, coordinating the many Support Servicesincluding the Personal Support Worker(PSW) services, foot care and physiother-apy. Her organizational skills and herability to smile under pressure are missed.

We wish Yukie and Hyosook the verybest of luck as they undertake their newadventures.

GOOD BYE AND GOOD LUCK!
