It was during her Sunday school years when the English teachers could not pronounce her Japanese name that she chose her own English name. Born in Surrey, British Columbia in September 1913 to Ikutaro and Shige Fujishige who immigrated to Canada together in 1898, she was the fi fth of seven children. Donor News

Our 10th annual Bowlathon was a record breaker - raising $33,000! These funds will assist in the refurbishing of Momiji’s 9th fl oor lounge, benefi tting not only our tenants but also their family, friends and the community. Close to 200 participants of all ages enjoyed three games of bowling at Kennedy Bowl (10-pin) and Parkway Bowl (5-pin) before returning to Momiji for a delicious bento box dinner and a prize-fi lled awards ceremony.

We sincerely wish to thank our prize donors; many long time supporters and some very welcomed new ones. But most importantly, we are so very, very grateful to the bowlers, their friends, family and the Japanese Canadian community for the support to Momiji through their generous sponsorship. The Bowlathon is truly a family event so plan on joining us for next year’s event for some friendly and fun competition, while raising money for Momiji.

Bowlathon – A perfect score!

A Record Breaking BazaarMomiji was a hub of activity at the end of March as we hosted our 20th annual community Bazaar. The Bazaar is Momiji’s largest fundraiser raising almost $35,000 - our most profi table ever! All proceeds from the Bazaar go towards furthering Momiji’s work. This year the emphasis will be on our outreach meal programs which provide nutritious and Japanese – themed meals to seniors living in the community. Our tenants will also benefi t through support of their ongoing programs and special subsidies.

Once again the Bazaar’s great success was only made possible through the tireless efforts and sacrifi ces made by our volunteers. And Momiji cannot forget to acknowledge the tremendous generosity of the Bazaar’s corporate donors and community partners, whose ongoing support ensured our success.

Next year’s Bazaar will be held on Saturday, April 2nd. We hope to see you there!

When Fred Sasaki founded the Momiji Foundation (MF) over 30 years ago, his intention was to create an organization with the mandate to support Japanese Canadian seniors. Fred had the foresight that this would be a vitally needed and growing requirement within the Japanese community. Fred was absolutely right and Momiji Health Care Society has been very fortunate over the years to be a recipient of many Foundation grants. This funding has made it possible to sustain the high quality of Momiji’s Support Services client care, Elderly Persons Centre programs, as well as offer subsidies for congregate dining and transportation services.

Although Fred is no longer with us, his infl uence and contribution to the Momiji Foundation continues with his bequest gift of $200,000. The Foundation’s policy is to invest these funds with the generated interest income made available to charitable organizations serving Japanese Canadians.

Thinking of signing up for more courses or workshops at Momiji, but getting there is a problem? We may be able to help.

Momiji’s Transportation Program can provide seniors (60+) living in Scarborough with a ride from their homes to Momiji education classes and a return trip home. A minimum of one week’s notice is required and the fee is $5.00 one-way or $10.00 round trip.

If you like variety, our Art & More Sale was the place to be. Digital art, handmade note cards, prints, jewelry and much more greeted visitors to Momiji on Saturday, June 20th. In addition to the beautiful creations by our artists and artisans, there was a Café Boutique where vintage goods, collectibles and Japanese wares could be purchased.

Our Art Café offered hungry shoppers a vast array of food including pulled pork sandwiches, quiche, Asian noodle salad, and dozens of homemade desserts from “Death by Chocolate Cake” and “What’s Up Doc Carrot Cake” to Strawberry Fields and Rhubarb pie. Once again this year, there was a beautiful quilt, lovingly handmade and donated by the Nimble Thimble Quilters, which was raffl ed off and won by Kathleen Pianosi. The money raised from the sale will support Momiji and its Education programs.

Education ProgramsBeing Momiji’s Education Coordinator has been an exciting and exhilarating time for me over these past four months. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting all the instructors and many of the students, and besides offering some great suggestions and ideas; I was so impressed with their passion and commitment to ensure the quality of their lessons. Well you have been heard and I am happy to report that the following changes will take place beginning in the Fall with more to come in the following months:

Streamlining the Registration Process:

1. Payment in full is due upon registration. It is highly recommended that payment be made before classes begin (in person or by mail) in order to reduce the waiting times for making payment on the fi rst day of class.

2. Credit card (VISA and MC) and Debit payments will now be accepted. Cheques will continue to be accepted.

Course Length Extended: Many of the 8 week courses will now run a total of 10 weeks, thereby eliminating the need to add extensions, saving instructors, students and Momiji staff time. As usual classes will begin mid-September, but will now continue through to the end of November.

New Classes: In the works are Ballroom Dancing and daytime Line Dancing. However these new classes are dependent upon instructors’ availability, fees and student demand. Stay tuned.

You have been heard...

1. For fi tness classes, we strongly recommend that students consult their physicians before registering, and remain well hydrated during each class.

2. For art and cooking classes, we ask students to please be careful and clean up their area after each class. If a spill or accident happens, instructors should report it right away at Momiji’s Reception desk in the Lobby, so our staff can contact the Maintenance department.

3. Momiji Centre is an active seniors’ residence and community gathering place. Our Education Program students are more than welcome to socialize in our common areas, such as the Café area by the Momiji Store, the Atrium Lounge, and Zero Sun Restaurant, so long as they don’t disrupt any other activities that are taking place. Coffee and cookies are available by the Momiji Store throughout the day, for a small charge.

Education Program Policy Reminder

This beautiful quilt was raffl ed at our Art & More Sale. It was made by the very talented Nimble Thimble Quilters and the “Earthy Frames” pattern was designed by Kaffe Srett.

Caregiver SupportAn interview with Keiko Hoshi, Momiji’s Client Intervention Worker

Q: How does Momiji’s Interven-tion Services help applicants on the waiting list and keep attuned to the pulse and current needs of Japanese seniors living in the community?

A: Momiji’s Client Intervention services provide without charge social work case management to seniors living in the community and at the Momiji residence. A wide spectrum of services of client-centred care is offered to maintain and improve seniors’ quality of life and independent living.

There has been a rise in the need for crisis intervention services for seniors in the community. The two most frequent requests for immediate help come from two groups:

1. Isolated seniors many of which are Shin-Ijusya (new immigrant) who have lost their social network upon retirement from work, lack family support and access nearby, and are experiencing decreased mobility and cognitive abilities that hamper their independence and confi dence.

2. Senior couples where one spouse’s caregiving needs have dramatically increased and family support is not accessible or available. The emotional and physical stress of caregiving beyond one’s ability is beginning to cause health issues for the caregiving spouse.

In both these case types, Momiji’s Client Intervention Services make a home visit to assess the need for immediate help and to assist in referring the seniors to organizations that can address their immediate needs as well with the long-term view to decrease isolation and improve quality of life.

CASE STUDIES

The following are two examples of how Momiji’s Client Intervention Worker (CIW) has been of assistance to seniors in need in the community:

Case 1: Isolated couple has no family living close by, is unaware of services available to them and is confused on how to access them.

The 88-year old wife is looking after her 90-year old husband who lives with physical impairment and mild cognitive impairment after multiple strokes. They live alone in a house without any ongoing support in place. Their children live out of the province and visit them a couple times in a year.

The fi rst time Momiji’s CIW visited, this couple did not know how to access community support or how to ask for their children’s involvement to help better understand their situation and options. Since then the CIW has helped this couple put in place the following services:

• the husband is attending an adult day program 2-3 times a week with transportation services;

• they both receive daily lunch and dinner service delivery to their home; and

• the husband receives PSW support for personal hygiene needs.

The wife has expressed she is much happier now since her stress level has decreased due to receiving respite from some of the daily caregiving demands and from having some time to herself. The CIW has observed that this couple is happy to stay together living in their home with continued community supports, instead of being separated and the husband being moved to the nursing home.

Case 2: Couple where one spouse requires increasing caregiving needs beyond what the other spouse can

provide.

The caregiving husband is 87-years-old and looking after his 87-year old wife who lives with physical and cognitive impairment. They live alone in a house without any ongoing support. A daughter lives nearby, but is not asked for help since the husband does not want his daughter to feel burdened. The wife refuses to go to her physician, receive home care services as well as receive personal care assistance from anyone including her husband. The wife is mostly bedridden and the husband performs all household and day-to-day living chores.

The husband has expressed that he is overwhelmed with his caregiving role, but continues to follow his wife’s growing demands and requests. The CIW referred the husband to the Alzheimer Society for caregiver counselling and to a community agency for group support. The CIW also referred the wife, who has multiple physical problems and cognitive issues to the Geriatric Assessment and Intervention Network (GAIN) clinic. The CIW continues to follow up on this case.

Celebrating our Healthy Environment

All Things Momiji

It is always rewarding to be able to reap the benefi ts of foresight and extra effort, as often a positive outcome is only materialized over many years. Momiji’s Outbreak Reduction Program is one example. After reading an outbreak report on other health facilities for seniors, it occurred to me that Momiji in its 23-year history has only had three outbreaks – certainly the lowest by any institutional standard (2006 May – Enteric, 2010 Feb – Enteric and 2012 Jan – Respiratory). There are many factors that I can attribute this remarkable success:

• Momiji’s Living Structure: individual living spaces reduce the chance to pass on germs as potentially infected individuals are more easily isolated.

• Momiji’s Reporting System: staff and tenants monitor infected individuals and report their conditions to Support Services for immediate action.

• Momiji’s Communications: staff and tenants are regularly educated on precaution techniques regarding passing on germs and observing healthy habits.

• Momiji’s In-House Medical Services: offering twice-a-week access to a medical

Food is a central part of any culture – and for many of us at Momiji, it’s a passion! “Culinary Connections” is a brand new cookbook compiled and published by Momiji tenant Sheila Matsui and her committee of volunteers, in support of Momiji Health Care Society. The recipes – and the stories behind them – were all submitted by members of the Momiji community, and their family and friends. This exciting new collection of recipes showcases both the time-honoured Japanese and Canadian traditions
