It’s just not trueEmail warnings that all cellphone numbers will “go public this month” have been circulating since the summer telling customers they will start receiving unwanted telemarketing calls unless they are registered with the national Do Not Call list.

It definitely sounds legitimate with a real web address and phone number to the DNC; however, there is not a need to register because most telemarketers use automated dialers, which are prohibited by the federal government in calling cell phones without the consumer’s consent.

Counterfeit Detergent? We’ve all heard of fake Rolex watches, Gucci handbags, Tiffany jewelry or Windows operating systems coming out of China, but fake laundry detergent? (Tide detergent, to be specific).

Last September in Seattle, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized 5,000 boxes of the counterfeit laundry detergent from a ship that had arrived from China. It is estimated that shipment would have generated a $4,000 profit. It turns out that there is a 300-400% profit in counterfeit detergent, and the ones getting the fake products are the mom-and-pop groceries or outdoor markets.

Counterfeiting costs American businesses $200 billion to $250 billion annually, according to the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition). Authorities use the same techniques used to search for terrorist weapons after 9/11 also detect counterfeit detergent. The boxes of detergent are now stored in a warehouse through the end of the investigation after which they may end up in a landfill.

NOW Moms Vote Matters

Welcome to the New 112th Congress

The National Association for Moms in Business (NAFMIB) joins Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP) in welcoming the 112th Congress

and its 107 new members.

The Senate welcomes one new woman:Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) who previously served as New Hampshire’s Attorney General. However, the total number of women in the Senate will remain at 17, the same number as in the 111th Congress.

The House welcomes 13 new Congresswomen including:Sandy Adams (R-FL), Karen Bass (D-CA), Diane Lynn Black (R-TN), Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY), Renee Elmers (R-NC), Colleen Hanabusa (D-HA), Vicky Hartzler (R-MO), Nan Hayworth (R-NY), Jaime Herrera (R-WA), Kristi Lynn Noem (R-SD), Martha Roby (R-AL), Terri Sewell (D-AL), and Frederica Wilson (D-FL).

There are now a total of 73 women Members in the 112th Congress, a decrease of four from the 111th Congress.

We would also like to share a summary of the congressional January highlights and the State of the Union Address regarding small business. You may see WIPP’s detailed report at Instant Impact Legislative Update – January 31, 2011.

1) Support for the Repeal of the 1099 Reporting Requirement Grows in Congress

Legislation has been introduced in both the House and the Senate to repeal the 1099 reporting requirement that was part of the healthcare reform act effective in 2012. The 1099 provision requires business owners to report to the Internal Revenue Service every supplier paid more than $600 a year. The provision was originally put in place with the claim that it would generate an estimated $17

billion in federal tax revenue. The IRS has stated that it could not enforce the new requirement. (more)

President Obama, in his State of the Union address, referred to the 1099 reporting requirement as a “flaw in the legislation that has placed an unnecessary bookkeeping burden on small businesses.” WIPP has been very vocal and active in supporting the 1099 repeal. WIPP is now reaching out to members to urge co sponsorship of this important legislation.

2) $30 Billion Small Business Lending Fund Set to Begin

The $30 billion Small Business Lending Fund (SBLF), which became law in September 2010, is gearing up to begin releasing funds to community banks across the country within the next two months. The SBLF, which is run by the Department of Treasury, will encourage lending to small businesses by providing capital to qualified community banks with assets of $10 billion or less. The more small business loans a participating community bank makes, the cheaper the capital becomes to participating banks. If a community bank increases its small business loans by 10%, its repayment rate to the Treasury will drop to 1%.

Community banks have until March 31 to apply to participate in the SBLF.

3) Sens. Landrieu, Snowe Seek Recommendations from SBA to Eliminate Programs

On Tuesday, Chair Mary L. Landrieu (D-LA) and Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME), of the Senate Small Business Committee, sent a letter to SBA Administrator Karen Mills requesting recommendations for programs within the SBA that could be eliminated or substantially reduced, without undermining the agency’s ability to serve the needs of small business owners.

4) How Did Small Business Fare in The State of the Union?

All in all, pretty well. The State of the Union address by President Obama contained not only an acknowledgement of the importance of small businesses for the health of our economy, but also singled out some small businesses who were guests of the First Lady.

The President called for the repeal of the 1099 reporting requirement. He called for a review of regulations that adversely impact business growth and operation.

He urged Congress to examine overhauling the tax code and called for lower corporate tax rates.Read the entire report at:Instant Impact Legislative Update – January 31, 2011.

From Fired to Hired

An Interview with Tory Johnson, Good Morning America’s Career Expert,Founder of Women For Hire and Spark &

Hustle and mother of 13-year-old twins, Jake and Emma.

By Gina Robison-Billups

Moms In Business Magazine • March 2011 • PAGE 1

GRB: What is Women For Hire?

TORY: Women For Hire produces high-caliber career expos for professional women and offers a wide range of online services at our website, www.WomenForHire.com .

Spark & Hustle, which I founded in 2010, is a series of three-day conferences held in eight cities, designed for current and aspiring women entrepreneurs and small business owners. SparkandHustle.com. GRB: Why did you go into this business?

TORY: After I was suddenly fired from a corporate communications position at NBC News — a job I loved and thought I could have had forever — I decided that I wanted to take control of my work life and start my own businesses. Career expos were a dime a dozen in 1999 but no one seemed to be doing any that catered specifically to women. I decided to create a niche business and I found that many recruiters from Fortune 500 companies, non-profits and governmental agencies wanted a forum like Women For Hire to reach women. GRB: What has been the single hardest part of being in business? How did you deal with that?

TORY: I think about everything and I wear many hats to cover all aspects of the business. Recruiting, marketing, sales, budgets — you name it. I deal with it by hiring good people and by planning my time with great precision so I pack a lot into each day. GRB: What’s your greatest achievement (or what are you most proud of?) TORY: I have helped connect thousands or smart and savvy women job seekers with terrific employers. I didn’t

get them jobs, but I created a forum for them to make it happen. I’m equally happy of helping so many women start and grow their small businesses, all of which have enabled them to make more money. I’m a New York Times bestselling author and I’ve spent the last six years as the workplace contributor on ABC’s Good Morning America, where I’m proud to serve our viewers with their career challenges. GRB: What’s on the horizon for you and your business?

TORY: In the next decade, through Spark & Hustle, I will guide thousands of more women create or ramp up their own small businesses. I’m

bullish on entrepreneurship as the smartest way to secure your financial future. And I’m so eager to work with women to make it possible for them to realize their dreams by turning ideas into reality into cash. GRB: How do you manage it all?

TORY: I don’t view my “work” and my “life” separately. I make no distinction between home and office. It takes some juggling but it’s all about quality — giving everything the quality it requires. I have a phenomenally rock-solid relationship with my kids and my husband — even though it feels as though I’m always working. None of us would have it any other way. What works for me may not work for you – and vice versa. Do what works best for you. There are no right and wrong paths or protocols when it comes to managing your life. It’s not about balance — it’s about two distinct things. It’s about the whole of your life — and being passionate and productive and happy with all of its many moving parts. GRB: What advice do you have for other moms in business? TORY: Forge your own path. Make your own money. It kills me to see women hurt by divorce when they’ve never worked — or haven’t worked in years. They have to start over financially and it’s extremely difficult – not impossible, but challenging. Very challenging. So if you always have a way to make your own money — even a side gig — you’ll keep your mind sharp and your finances protected. That’s not only a win for you, but it’s a huge win for your kids too.

I once knew a beautiful woman named Margaret. She truly loved life. She had the greatest sense of humor and loved spending time with others.

Like many women, Margaret loved to shop, cook, golf and take vacations. Her favorite holiday was Christmas—and she made that holiday magical for her family.

But then hard times set in. After 25 years of marriage, Margaret and her husband divorced. Then she developed some health problems that limited her ability to travel. Finances got tight, and she no longer had the means to do all the things she used to love.

Her kids felt burdened, trying to help their mother financially. Because of all the things Margaret valued in her life, the one thing she hadn’t valued was saving.

Margaret spent the last several years of her life living on $750 a month, plus $165 in food stamps. Her rent alone was $550, and the medical bills continued to stack up. That meant no more golf, no more traveling, no more lavish Christmas parties. She couldn’t even visit her children who lived out of state.

Margaret felt that the worst part of her life was living without choices and without dignity. Notsurprisingly, she spent the end of her life in depression.

Ultimate Expression

By Jayne L. Black

Moms In Business Magazine • March 2011 • PAGE 1

On December 5, 2010, Margaret passed away, alone. One of the only things she left behind was a box of pictures from her younger years. Pictures of when she was happy…when she had choices.

This lovely woman was my mother. But she could be your mother too. One in five women live inpoverty during retirement. That’s less than $10,000 per year.

Margaret could even be you or your sister, if you don’t do something today to start saving forretirement. Don’t think you can put it off. Don’t fool yourself into thinking the future will take care of itself. Because it won’t!

Dignity can be bought, but only you can make that happen.

You see, the only reason to save is because you are worth it.

I’ve been working from home since my youngest daughter was born. It’s been a great adventure and I’m so blessed to be able to stay home with my kids and bring some income to the family budget. I love it.

The key to making this work for our family has been having our daughters work with me in my businesses from the beginning. Now I know, that sounds impossible. And obviously a newborn can’t stick labels on my mailing etc. But as soon as my kids could walk and talk I started training them to be little entrepreneurs and helpers, beginning first with helping me around the house so that I could get the business work done.

Here are a few quick steps you can take with your little ones to start them on the road to success in helping you with your business and even toward helping them get their own home business started when they’re older.

1. While they’re still in your arms, use a sling or a backpack to carry baby with you while you work. Talk about what you’re doing and how they can help you when they’re older.

The key at this age is have them WITH you as much as possible and then use nap time to get those things done that might be impossible to do with a young one strapped to you.

2. When your little ones can walk, have them help you with some simple tasks…filling up the dog food, folding

– Starting them Young and Creating Good Habits for Life

By Annette Yen

washcloths, snapping beans. Always talk about how much help they are to you and how much you’ll love it when they’re ready to do this job all by themselves. Before you know it they’ll be saying, “I can do it mom!”

3. Praise them often for their efforts. They may not put the fork on the right side of the plate but it’s there and it helped. Let them know it! Make simple jobs easy for them. Put items in drawers that they can reach. For instance, a two or three year old can easily set the table with silverware, but it would really help them if they had a placemat to tell

Little Entrepreneurs

Moms In Business Magazine • March 2011 • PAGE 21

them where each piece goes and if the flatware was in a drawer at their level. You can easily make a vinyl placemat a silverware map with a sharpie. Just draw each piece on there and use the placemats at every meal letting your child set the table.

4. Let them work the business with you. In the beginning that might just be having them sit in the high chair or booster seat at the table while you work the computer and they put paperclips in Dixie cups. Or buy some tape and construction paper and have them tape away … it’s cheap and you’re using items that they’ll be using in the future to really help you with your business.

As soon as they’re ready, have them put the stickers and postage stamps on your mailings, strap the packing tape on your boxes (it doesn’t have to be perfect!) sort and/or file your

papers, etc. Again, the key when they’re young is working with them and encouraging them.

5. Let them work independently when they’re ready. Kids are often ready to take on bigger responsibilities before you think they are. A 10 year old can easily handle the checkbook and just imagine how great it will be for his math skills too – plus the bank checks his work!

Involve your young kids in your business from the beginning. You’ll be amazed at how the investment of time (and maybe some frustration) in the early days will pay off greatly down the road when your children can handle huge parts of your business without you because they’ve been well trained.

The Challenge All Moms In Business

FaceWomen own over 9 million businesses, yet they receive the least amount of financing from traditional sources such as banks and venture capital firms.

Women traditionally own smaller types of businesses that don’t need financial assistance of $250,000 or more, and so financing options are limited.

Finding capital through private investors is more challenging than ever before. According to Capital Factory, “Gap shave formed in the traditional funding path for early stage companies.

24

Moms In Business Magazine • March 2011 • PAGE 2

Many venture capitalists are moving towards bigger funds that invest larger amounts of money in lower risk companies that have already proven their model. Angel investors are banding together into syndicates that look more and more like venture capitalists.”

Business loans can also be difficult to obtain. Most businesses are created with loans which rely on good credit histories and collateral that women (and mothers in particular) may have a hard time supplying due to divorce, medical expenses, and just the high cost of raising children. Women often use their credit cards or borrow from family members in order to start a business, which can make their own finances uncomfortable.

Now is probably the best time to start a business or expand your current business.

Most people look at the current economic condition and see the losses they have from last year (job loss, income loss, business loss), but losses can be doors to opportunities -- you just have to open your eyes and your mind. During times like these labor and supply costs are lower, there is less competition, and all budgets are being re-examined. People are open to new ways of doing things that will help them to reduce costs or to find more customers.

We want to help women whose minds are open to new ways of building their business with their participation in this new format of generating cash and business tools - the Moms In Business $10,000+ Grant Competition.

The National Association For Moms In Business is giving you the opportunity to create your dreams and give you the support you need to grow your business.

NAFMIB has partnered with peerbackers.com to produce this incredible program, offering you the FIRST Crowdfunding Business Grant in the Nation!

Moms In Business$10,000+ Grant Competition

In addition to the cash raised in the

grant competition, the grand prize

grant winner receives access to our

totaling Over $10,000 in free stuff!

The “CrowdFunding” platform is a way to raise money by attracting many small donations from a large group (friends, family, professional contacts) to meet a funding goal. “Backers” give contributions in exchange for rewards or perks offered by the entrepreneur (rewards can be any product, service or experience to which the entrepreneur has access). Why we are doing a CrowdFunding grant? After years of doing grants for moms in business we found two troubling things about the traditional grant method. First, out of all the great businesses we had the honor to review, we could only have one winner. This was a real bummer. Secondly, once we gave the money, we found that often the great person and business we read on paper had no “hustle” behind it. They looked great on paper, but that didn’t mean they would succeed. This too was a real bummer...and totally deflated our desire to do it again. We found a solution! As Tory Johnson, the founder of Spark & Hustle (see her interview in Moms In Business Magazine March 2011 issue), taught us. You can have a great idea and great intentions, but if you don’t have hustle, you don’t have a business. A great idea on paper doesn’t show the hustle behind the idea. That’s where our partnership with peerbackers.com comes into play.

By doing a crowdfunding grant we solve the two main challenges with grants:

Everyone can be a winner of cash -- not just a selected few.You have to have hustle to get your grant money. And if you’ve got that, chances are you are going to have great results with this grant and with your business.

We are doing more than supporting winning ideas. . .

I need to update you on how the grant winnings have been helping me. I utilized Image Words and the PR Newswire and got some awesome exposure.

I also have been working with Certify to Success and I met with Balance Organizing Solutions. All the tools have been wonderful and were items I never thought I would use until I had this opportunity. My new website is up and I have already outlined my 2009 marketing plan and am working to get all my materials ready. Image Words Publicity & Writing even landed an interview with Channel 13 for my husband!!  (He does mortgages and a news anchor came to our office to interview him about rebuilding your credit after foreclosures and reverse mortgages). It has been wonderful working with women that I can relate to and not feel intimidated about not having experience in their field.  Thank you,

Gina Russo, Trenchant Insurance

Tax season can be a stressful and confusing time for many working families. Stressful because preparing one’s own taxes can be challenging, and professional tax preparation is often a costly option. Confusing because it is not always clear what resources are available for those working on their returns. Filing your taxes can be free and simple when you access the IRS Free File system through a computer at your local One Stop Career Center.

Fortunately, for low and moderate-income families, there is a resource. The Free File program allows an estimated 70 percent of all taxpayers to file their returns for free online. This public-private partnership between the Internal Revenue Service and a number of tax software companies is available to millions. What is more, some companies offer their software in both English and Spanish.

We at the U.S. Department of Labor know that while online filing is appealing to many, there are those who do not have access to home computers. Everyone should know that computers at One Stop Career Centers are available for those who wish to file their taxes online.

Free online filing allows low to moderate income workers make sure they take advantage of tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit that are available to them. It also speeds the refund process when compared to traditional paper filing.

Free File also offers a secure way for users to file their tax returns. All information is stored on the servers of the participating tax software companies. Nothing is ever saved to a computer’s hard-drive.
