Over the years, the Principality of Monaco has hosted an

increasing number of varied artistic events. Home to art galleries

and internationally renowned auction houses, it has become an

important place in the art world with its fairs, exhibitions and

cultural events.

Galleries and auction houses established in the Principality have

chosen to join forces around the same objective: to promote their

rich and diverse activities, and contribute to Monaco’s cultural

reach on the local, regional and international scene. The MONACO

ART WEEK association is the result of this shared desire.

The first event initiated by the association is MONACO ART

WEEK. It will take place between 26 and 29 April 2018. All the

Principality’s neighbourhoods will be involved in the event, in

conjunction with the artmonte-carlo fair at the Grimaldi Forum and

Nomad at La Vigie.

At the same time, the Ballets de Monte-Carlo and the Festival

Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo will reveal their new productions

at the Grimaldi Forum. During this bustling period, when Monaco

takes centre stage, the intention is to appeal to all those who have

come to discover and nourish their passion for the arts, whether

they are novices, onlookers or experienced art-lovers.

« MONACO ART WEEK »from 26 to 29 April 2018

25 April will be devoted to receiving the press.

Founded in 2003 in Monaco, 11 Columbia gallery presents exhibitions of contemporary art and design under the direction of Delphine Pastor Reiss.

Painting, sculpture, drawing and photography confront the viewer and offer a broad spectrum of contemporary creation with a special place reserved for modern and contemporary design.

Over the years, 11 Columbia has developed close ties with some international galleries she invites to exhibit and with which she shares the same affinities, such as Air de Paris, François Laffanour and Galerie Kreo in Paris, Gate 5 in Monaco, Esther Schipper in Berlin, or Galleria O and Franco Noero in Italy.

Today after fifteen years of presence, 11 Columbia continues with the same enthusiasm to defend contemporary art and to propose a program of international stature.

long-term collaboration with Patrick Modiano. Pierre Le-Tan has

always been living with images, as his father, Le-Pho, Vietnamese

painter who established himself in Paris before World War II.

The exhibition will present a number of recent drawings and

the installation Intérieur de fantaisie deploying a drawing which

creates a mise en abyme into space and plays with the idea of

frame, mysterious old wooden measuring objects and a real frame

with a set of drawings in the drawing. A metaphysical fantasy.

11 Columbia gallery is pleased to present for the second time a

solo exhibition of recent works by Pierre Le-Tan.

Born in 1950, Pierre Le-Tan is a painter and draftsman. His

drawings have been published in numerous magazines, including

the prestigious New Yorker, at the age of nineteen and appeared

on film sets, notably in Quadrille by Valérie Lemercier. Pierre

Alfredo Pallesi was born in Bologna. Coming from a family of antique dealers, he opened his first cabinet in Rome in 1968. In 1981, he began his collaboration with Finarte Casa d’Aste at the Rome headquarters. After a few years, he became General Manager and took care of the headquarters of Milan, then Madrid.

In 2002, he resigned from Finarte and opened a gallery in Rome at 54 Via Margutta. He returns to his former activity by dedicating himself to the sale of paintings and sculptures from the 17th to the 20th century. He participates in various exhibitions including the Biennial of Florence and Rome. In 2011, he moved the gallery to the Principality of Monaco where he opened at Park Palace.

For an Italian gallery located abroad, it seemed quite natural to

present a sample of these works, which are the testimony of the

artistic development of that time.

VIEW AND LANDSCAPE OF ITALY

VINCENZO CAPRILE(Naples, 1856 - 1936) « First Holy communion at Positano »Oil on canvas, 153 x 114 cm

The period of the nineteenth century is characterized by travels

throughout Europe, which are much easier than in the previous

century.

Italy becomes the unavoidable destination for foreign painters.

Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples and their surroundings are

greatly frequented by artists from all over Europe, as evidenced

by their innumerable travel diaries.

There are many paintings with the subject of Italian’s views

and landscapes, which are well known all over Europe but also

overseas.

ARTCURIAL

Artcurial was founded in 2002, just at the time the French auction market was opening up to competition, and quickly became the leading French auction house. Since then the firm has continually innovated, launching new specialties such as Design and Street Art, which are a major international success.

Today, as a multifaceted auction house, Artcurial enjoys international recognition and has earned its place at the forefront of the art market. With sales taking place mainly in Paris and Monaco, the auction house made nearly 200 M euros in 2017.

Conceived as a cultural venue, the passion for works of art and

collectors’ items is expressed around a core of main specialities - from fine art to decorative art, collectors’ cars, jewellery, important clocks and watches, fine wines and spirits, etc., in fact more than 25 areas of expertise.

With a clear international focus, Artcurial’s expertise extends

beyond the French borders, exporting its know-how through representative offices in Brussels, Milan, Monte-Carlo, Munich and Vienna as well as having a presence in Beijing and Tel Aviv and holding biannual exhibitions in New York. In October 2015, Artcurial organised its first sales in Hong Kong and in Morocco.

In 2017 the Artcurial group acquired John Taylor - one of the oldest luxury real estate companies.

In 1976, the De Jonckheere house in Brussels was founded, specializing in the study and sale of Flemish paintings from the 15th to the 17th centuries. In 1984, the gallery moved to Paris. Its various collections are presented to the most demanding of amateurs and especially when participating in the main fairs of ancient art such as the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris or the TEFAF in Maastricht.

In April 2011, the De Jonckheere Gallery opened its new space in the heart of the historic district of Geneva. From now on and since the 2012 edition of the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris, a staging of works both ancient and modern marks the two facets of its activity. In June 2017, the gallery inaugurates a second space in Monaco.

NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE, « Last night I had a dream »

Born in 1930, Niki de Saint Phalle, who started out as a model

then trained as an actor, exorcised the traumas of her childhood

through her art. An iconic figure among the female artists of the

second half of the 20th century, she was struck by the fantastical

power of Antonio Gaudi’s work, whom she discovered the work

for the first time in Park Güell in 1955. The end of the 1960s marked

her desire to bring together, in large sculpted assemblies, the

various figures drawn from her dreams and vivid imagination.

Last Night I had a Dream is one of them: it is comprised of her

nanas, her favourite animals as well as symbols of her trips and

her love affairs. This group of 18 sculptures in painted polyester,

created in 1968, exhibits ‘signature’ motifs, also repeated, several

times, in drawings accompanied by texts dating from the same

year. Reflections of her innermost thoughts, oscillating between

humour and irony, these sculpted and painted totems are the

vectors for her emotions: the colours, the rounded shapes,

the chubby women, all serve to conceal a deep suffering.

Exhibited in full this spring by De Jonckheere at its gallery in

Monaco, this series summons up the memories of a dream.

A dream that seems to have contained all the symbols of

happiness in love in the mythology of this astonishing artist.

Since 1990, the Retelet Gallery offers masterpieces of Modern and Contemporary Art to art lovers and collectors. Formerly located in Saint-Paul de Vence and Brussels, the Retelet Gallery selects the works of the great names of History of Art primarily for their quality and their provenance. It is because the exhibited works are chosen with care and expertise that the Gallery has been able to satisfy a demanding clientele throughout the years.

In April 2018, Galerie Retelet is pleased to announce its opening with a new space in Monaco during Monaco Art Week.

sculpture. He makes abstract collages based on narrative

references, such as Had Gadya series inspired by illustrations

from the Jewish song, or the series The Waves, which refers to

the novel Moby Dick.

Peter Halley also proposes works of a new kind. Inspired by New

York’s geometric urbanism, the social structures that govern our

society today as well as the digital era in which we live in, he

presents highly geometric abstract works related to a fragmented

world.

Through this exhibition, these three artists will demonstrate how

they managed to propose, each in their own way, another way

to Clement Greenberg’s modernist vision and participate in the

renewal of American Abstract movement.

For its opening, Galerie Retelet gathers three emblematic figures

of the American Abstraction: Sam Francis, Frank Stella and Peter

have emancipated themselves from this movement and give us a

new vision of Contemporary American Abstraction.

Sam Francis develops in his works a new aesthetic of color

through abstract shapes that he places on the canvas to reveal the

background: place of infinity. This background gives an intense

Kamil Art Gallery showcases a large collection of contemporary art, and remains committed to supporting the work of young, emerging artists worldwide. Owned by the architect and interior designer Kamil, the gallery combines cutting-edge design with new and well-known art piece from artists. In nearly 30 years, Kamil has supported many artists from l’Ecole de Nice (Sosno, Le Malin, Klein, Arman ...) and highlighted the Spanish Sabala, F.M.G and Serrano. He is currently preparing several books on Berkouk, primitive and contemporary naïve artist with an impressive collection of more than 5000 works and the range of a great master of the twentieth century. He also supports an exceptionally eccentric German artist Eric Massholder with challenging works. It is quite natural that today Kamil Art Gallery focuses on Iranian contemporary art that is in full expansion.

ANIMAL PARTY Contemporary Art from Iran

RAMTIN ZAD«ANIMAL PARTY, Elysium series », 2015Acrylic on canvas, 180 x 180 cm

The human-like quality associated with animals throughout

the history has entered the Iranian imagination from the book

illustrations of old myths to the Coffee-House paintings of folkloric

stories. The natural and artistic responses in the eventful works

of Shadi Rezaei, Negar Jahanbakhsh, Shaghayegh Shojaian and

Ramtin Zad evoke specific reactions in twilight worlds within

a contemporary approach. This exhibition presents a careful

selection of recently created paintings that meet and float on the

borders between the powerful and the gentle, the familiar and

the alien, the poetic and the literal as well as the old and the new.

Will be presented by Magic of Persia at The Grimaldi Forum

during Art Monte-Carlo

The contemporary Iranian art field has been growing in the

global scene much faster than ever before. Its evolution in the

21st century is owed to not only the increased number of artists

curators and institutes whose involvement in the field have

been immeasurable.

In collaboration with the Art Monte-Carlo 2018, Magic of

Persia (A London-based Art Charity Foundation) will present

a panel discussion and an exhibition titled Contemporary Iran.

The panel aims to discuss the contemporary condition of

Iranian art both locally and globally from various aspects

encompassing educational, artistic and economical angles. This

exhibition presents a historiographical review of the formation

of new art in Iran.

The conference will be held on Sunday 29 April at 6p.m. at the

L’Entrepôt - Daniel BOERI is gambling on the future. Emerging young talents whose creative force will undoubtedly have an impact on the future. Over the years, the gallery has confirmed its artistic tastes. Today, Daniel Boeri’s growing interest in contemporary art is his guiding principle.

Encouraging all mediums, the gallery offers a unique space open to creation, giving artists extensive freedom while developing a strong interaction with the public.

L’Entrepôt has become one of the galleries in the principality, resolutely international and the source of great artistic synergy.

“SOUS LES PAVÉES, LA PLAGE !”

Taking one of May 68’s slogans, a situationist drift, Wolfgang

Weileder and Cédric Tesseire, two artists dear to Gino Gianuizzi,

examine the visible. While they’re questioning their support,

these two artists highlight the invisible and let the spectator

witness their own wishes.

On one hand, Wolfgang Weileder, through his large format

photographic works, questions the notion of space-time, and

the limits between figuration and abstraction. Captivating

and fascinating, they bring the spectator to the most total

contemplation.

While Cédric Teisseire, works paintings composed of colored

lines that slide in a straight line. Leaving the process operate on

its own, the artist gets rid of subjectivity and affirms the cooling

of painting. Of this distance from making, are curiously born

sumptuous contemporary icons rereading abstract and minimal

art with the outmost elegance and regain a form of aura.

The meeting of these two artists, allows a questioning on the

stakes of the representation of the non visible in the contemporary

art. The viewer has to get around it better to perceive and

understand their visions.

On the occasion of Monaco Art Week and artmonte-carlo the gallery will present the show « RUBEDO » by young talented Leonardo Petrucci from the Rome artistic pole « Pastificio Cerere » who has hosted since many years the most prominent Italian artists from the School of Rome.

The show presents a new series of works by Leonardo Petrucci especially conceived for MONACO ART WEEK.

« RUBEDO »Exposition de Leonardo Petrucci

nm>contemporary presents the exhibition “Rubedo” by

Leonardo Petrucci, especially conceived for Monaco Art Week

and artmonte-carlo.

Leonardo Petrucci is a young Italian artist belonging to the

artistic pole named « Pastificio Cerere » in Rome.

He had a one man show at Baruchello Foundation in Rome in

2016 and will present « Rubedo » in Monaco at the same time as

the Baruchello exhibition at Villa Arson in Nice.

This liaison among the roman institution and that of Nice will

allow the public of Monaco Art Week and artmonte-carlo 2018 to

discover the continuity between a young talent and an important

artist such as Gianfranco Baruchello, close to Marcel Duchamp,

Jacques Lacan, Pierre Restany and the French New Realists.

The title “Rubedo” recalls the third and last phase of alchemic

transmutation.

During this phase, the matter becomes red and gets to the

absolute perfection gaining a cosmic purity.

The exhibition is a synthesis of the alchemic process leading the

visitor through two rooms.

Black is the dominant color of the first room and represents the

Nigredo, the first alchemic phase, which means corruption and

imperfection.

The works displayed recall geometrical solids whose symmetry

is build and destroyed to evoke the contrast between limits and

infinity.

In the second room the viewer experiences the matter’s

purification walking in a red light ambience where a series of

carpets, hand made by Indian artisans, reproduce faithfully the

first images of Mars surface, taken by Rover Curiosity (NASA) in

2012.

The astronomic aspect of the show is a metaphor of the alchemist

research of a new dimension, a pioneering action which makes

the visitor direct protagonist of the first step on the new planet

and a new mystique world.

ITALIANS MONOCHROMES

Opera Gallery Monaco is proud to present the exhibition Italians Monochrome, a selection of works of artists from around the

world who have contributed to monochrome painting such as

Lucio Fontana, Turi Simeti , Agostino Bonalumi, Marcello Lo

Giudice and Alessandro Algardi.

Although monochromes have existed since ancient times in Asia

and Africa, it was only as of 1915 that a concept was conceived

by Kasimir Malevitch and illustrated in his famous painting Black

Square on White Backdrop, considered ‘‘the ultimate point in

painting, or its zero point’’. Monochrome art has undergone in-

depth research while experiencing success and failure throughout

the 20th century. It is, however, unquestionably in Italy, after

World War II, that it earned its stripes.

In 1947, Lucio Fontana published his Primo Manifesto dello Spazialismo, followed by Manifesto Spazialismo in 1948, where

he exposed his theories on unity in art and architecture. These

publications inspired young artists like Agostino Bonalumi and

Turi Simeti. In 1951, the artist completed his first monochrome

pieces, initially created as architectural ornaments before being

considered as unique works of art.

Monochrome art is not a style nor a movement but rather the

result of an atitude, a personal stand taken by the artist. Its main

goal is to explore the relationship between context and content.

Monochromes Italiens, which will be exhibited from April

25th to April 30th, reflects the genre’s variety of approaches

and techniques. This is how Lucio Fontana transformed the

monochrome piece into architectural concepts symbolising all

the questions related to the era of reconstruction in the 1950s.

As for Marcello Lo Giudice, the artist used the genre as a support

for his organic works using the elements of nature, the Earth and

volcanos, as echos to the various ecological issues of the early

21st Century. Monochromes inevitably evoke the perceptions of

a given me and the artist’s interrogations of the era.

Sotheby’s opened its first office in Monaco in 1967 and was the first international auction house to organise public sales in the Principality of Monaco. Many sales were held in Monte Carlo until the opening of the art market in France, putting an end to the 400-year-old monopoly of French auctioneers.

For more than 30 years, the Sporting d’Hiver was the scene of exceptional sales featuring furniture, paintings and objets d’art from European collections. Among the greatest collections sold in Monaco are the Redé Rothschild collection, which was the first one organised by Sotheby’s in Monaco in 1975, Mona Bismarck’s, Comtesse de Béhague’s collection inherited from the Marquis de Ganay in 1987, Karl Lagerfeld’s collection of Memphis furniture in 1991, Baron Guy de Rothschild’s collection from Château de Ferrières in 1994, and the Count and Countess of Paris’ collection in 1996.

Since 2001, the team at Sotheby’s Monaco has continued to forge special links with Monegasque collectors by offering to include the works from their collections in its major international sessions in Paris, London, Geneva, Hong Kong and New York. To give a few examples: the Luigi Laura and Barbara Piasecka Johnson collections, which reached almost € 10 million and € 5.5 million respectively, inaugurated the first sales in Paris at the beginning of the 2000s; the rare and powerful work Saint Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy by the emblematic 17th century Italian caravaggesque painter, Artemisia Gentileschi, was sold in Paris for € 865,500 in 2014, and the wonderful painting Bunt im dreieck by Wassily Kandinsky, which appeared on the market for the first time in 2013, reached € 1.8 million in Paris; an icon of American Pop Art, Vicki! I — I thought I heard your voice! by Roy Lichtenstein, was sold for $ 7.2 million in New York in 2015; and a unique piece by Claude Lalanne, Coffee Table, was recently auctioned in Paris for € 471,000; in 2017, a ruby and diamond

ring exceeded € 4 million in Geneva, and a rare work by Eugène Delacroix, Tiger on the Look-out or Growling Tiger, was sold in Paris for € 931,500.

Sotheby’s Monaco is also a cultural player as the partner of major exhibitions in the Principality, such as the one dedicated to Francis Bacon at the Grimaldi Forum in 2016.
