Christina Lund Madsen & Zia Mahmood will be masters of tonight’s auction

Sous le Haut Patronage de SAS le Prince Albert II de Monaco

The qualifying rounds of the Cavendish have given their verdict: the American team of Zia Mahmood (John Hurd, Steve Weinstein, Vince Demuy) has finished top and will play the semi-final this morning against the British team of David Mossop, with the Hackett family who finished fourth.

The other semi-final sees the Zimmermann team oppose England’s Charles Wigoder team.

This is quite a surprise, since the Lavazza team, who were finalists two years ago, failed to make the last four.

An exciting day for all starting at 10 am.

The day will finish late since, after the Teams final, we will open the auction for the Pairs event during a cocktail served in the salons of the Meridien.

The bidding will probably reach a high level, given the number of participants – 66 pairs of which some Ladies invited to the Open since we have had to shelve the Ladies’ event.

We will be particularly interested to follow Zia Mahmood and Steve Weinstein, Jean-Charles Allavena’s favorites, and why not, Christina Lund Madsen, the Danish champion of Europe Mixte with her Team partner Ton Bakkeren.

A very interesting auction in store for us !

Match 5: Mahmood takes the lead

The Polish team Bridge 24PL, winners against the Italian Lavazza Team and Zia Mahmood’s team, having beaten De Botton, found themselves face to face for Match five.

In the closed room, Zia Mahmood et Steve Weinstein played against Piotr Nawrocki et Pio Wiankowski.

The first two boards produced the same results: 3NT +1 et 4]-1 in both rooms.

Board 17 created the first difference.

Zia trumped the [K lead, and led {5. West went up with the Ace, and played the [A. Zia trumped, took }Q with the Ace, drew the {K, played the }J overtaken with the king, trumped a diamond. His nine, now good, let him discard a heart from dummy.

In the open room, Piotr Tuczynski was less inspired and went down one. (12-0).

On board 18, Mahmood chose to lead, against 2[ played by East, the ]Q. Declarer ducked and Zia continued, the rest was a pure formality. In the other room, the Poles managed to defeat the contract – one down. (12-4).

West took his time and chose the {6. Zia won, played a trump for the Ace and, after the lead back of a club, tabled. Maliciously he whispered to his opponent “It’s often best to lead one’s partener’s suit.” …

Effectively, on a spades lead, declarer has to trump and it suffices for the defence not to take the first round of trumps.

Same score in both rooms, the lead being the same.

Can you see how to make the contract go down? Franck Multon managed it. After the lead of ]A, ]K and hearts, he didn’t take the trick when declarer first tried the finesse of the [Q. He won the second time and played clubs for his partner’s Ace, king and clubs trumped. Joli flanc!

Mahmood scored 2 more imps on Board 27, to win 46 - 15.

She has played in all five Cavendish tournaments in Monaco, often with different teams. Kiki Ward Platt is always present at the big bridge events, in the Pricipality and elsewhere.

Born in America, she lived for many years on a ranch in Arizona, where she was brought up surrounded by horses, her first passion.

“I ran an insurance company for horses and planes so I didn’t have much time for bridge.”

However, she started to play bridge at 14 whilst at boarding school.

“I loved it straight away and never forgot it”.

It was much later that her love of the game came to the fore.

“I moved to Europe, to a farm in Ireland, in 1988. My son and three grandchildren stayed in the States. They live in Los Angeles.”

In 1999 she moved to Fayence on the Cote d’Azur, where she met Franck Multon. He coached her and improved her game.

“Bridge takes up a lot of space in my life. I enjoyed playing with Franck, who has taught me a lot.

Just like Cedric Lorenzini, my other favorite partner, with whom we won the Butler, our last tournament.”

She would have liked to play with either Franck or Cedric this year, but both were already booked up.

Franck introduced her to “Patounet”, alias Patrick Guilmet, and yesterday she played her first boards with him, Jerome Rombaut and François Combescure completing the team. A good win for the first match.

“I love playing team events” she said.

Don’t bother looking for her in pairs events, she likes to make the most of her lovely life on the Cote d’Azur.

THE MOSSOP TEAM: A FAMILY BUSINESSby Stephane Tardy

British David Mossop wanted to play in the Cavendish. Naturally he looked for English team-mates – and who thinks England thinks automatically of the Hackett family: father Paul and twins Jason and Justin.

It must be said that the team captain has played regularly with Paul for the last 26 years.

“He isn’t my regular partner but I’m very happy to find him with me at the bridge table.”

To complete the team, the twins, who have played together for the last 35 years.

What’s their main advantage?

“It’s because they have played together for so long” says Paul.

“They practically never quarrel. You never hear them raise their voice at the bridge table; when we compare the scores after a match nobody even thinks about blaming someone in the team.”

The twins agree “We play to win, not to quarrel between ourselves”.

The team hopes to finish in the last four and dispute the semi-finals.

Jason and Justin are just back from Japan where they won the NEC. Before that they played in the final of the Reisinger.

Being all three professionals, they are obliged to travel all over the world to play in prestigious tournaments. England does not offer enough scope for their ambitions.

What do you think of English Bridge?

“There are a lot of players in England, but only about a dozen have the ability to play at international level.”

Jason et Justin are in that category. 35 years playing together makes for a very strong pair. Being twins strengthens their complicity. With time their style of bridge has changed...

“When we were younger we had a very aggressive approach to bridge. Nowadays we are more conventional and serious.”

From time to time the duo splits up. Justin plays sometimes with Paul.

Jason thought he might play with his wife Barbara, who is in the German Ladies’ team.

“But it’s a bit too dangerous to play as a couple” he says.

It’s all about preserving family unity...
