Our concert begins with a performance by Dr Adrian McNeil on the stringed sarod and other instruments from the Indian subcontinent. We next move to Indonesia with a performance by the Javanese Gamelan Klenengan Ensemble led by Dr Aline Scott Maxwell, a percussive ensemble requiring intense coordination to achieve a dreamlike musicality.
This will be followed by a performance by the Monash Talo Balak Ensemble, the first of its kind outside of Indonesia, accompanying a Lampung dance by the Sanggar Lestari Company.
Performed as part of Monash University Open Day, the concert will conclude with a brief discussion of the ethnomusicology program at Monash with the opportunity to ask questions about the Music Archive.

SUNDAY 6 OCTOBER2-3:30PM
Be transported to the tropics of Sri Lanka and Thailand with this concert of traditional music and dance!
Beginning with a performance by the Rangana & Udumbara Dance Troupe, you will be mesmerised by the ritualised movements of the legendary Kandyan Dance. Accompanied by a percussion ensemble, this dance, although widespread throughout Sri Lanka, is rarely seen in other parts of the world.
The relaxing tones of the Thai dulcimer will close the concert, captivating the imagination and conjuring images of the pristine Thai landscape. Originating from Persia and influenced by Chinese instruments, the Thai dulcimer reflects the mixing pot of cultures that make up Thailand.
MUSIC FROM SRI LANKA & THAILAND
SUNDAY 10 NOVEMBER2-4PM
Our final Sunday concert features music and dance from the diverse cultures of the Pacific Ocean (Pasifika) performed by dance group Nesian Pearl and the Pasefika Vitoria Choir.
Nesian Pearl empowers young Samoan women to take pride by showcasing their culture through Siva Samoa. Siva Samoa, a Samoan dance, is the art of historical storytelling through poetic and graceful movement. Nesian Pearl’s motto is “We dance to remember” - to remember their ancestors and history.
The Pasefika Vitoria Choir was formed in 2016 as a way of representing the Pasefika communities of Victoria in one performance group. The choir performs a mix of Pasefika songs that embody Samoan, Tongan, Rarotongan, Maori, and Tokelauan languages. Led by Rita Seumanutafa and Steve Tafea, the Pasefika Vitoria Choir have performed across Victoria at various festivals and events.

The MLab Series introduces Monash to internationally renowned musicians at the forefront of musical creativity and virtuosity.
Featuring toy pianist Antonietta Loffredo, cellist Judith Hamann, and art-music ensemble Mahagonny, the MLab Series will entertain and educate, all while pushing the boundaries of music.
Delivered in collaboration with the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, the MLab Series provides the opportunity to hear performances by world-class musicians foregrounded with spoken presentations by the artists themselves.
Please note that in the event of wet weather, MLab Series performances may be relocated to an alternative venue. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates.
MLAB SERIES
7 AUGUST | 21 AUGUST | 16 OCTOBER2-3PM
Meet one of the few toy piano specialists in the world in this concert of rarely-heard music from a rarely-played instrument.
Having graduated from the Conservatorio di Verona Evaristo Felice dall’Abacco in Italy in piano performance, Antonietta Loffredo fell in love with the miniature toy piano and dedicated her Masters degree at the University of Milan to its study.
Born from the hands of a German toy manufacturer in 1872, the toy piano uses metal rods as opposed
to strings to create a music-box like sound. Significantly more restricted in range than a traditional 88-key piano, the toy piano’s 25 keys require a defter hand to master.
Performing a range of pieces from 20th century avant-garde to contemporary experimental, this little piano will deliver a powerhouse performance.

Be entranced by the smooth sounds of one of Australia’s foremost contemporary cellists.
Judith Hamann’s performance practice stretches across a multitude of genres including improvised, contemporary classical, experimental, and popular music. Having performed at festivals internationally from Zurich to Seattle and Tokyo, as well as at Dark Mofo in Hobart, Judith is returning home to Melbourne (Kulin Nations) to perform a concert of experimental cello music.
Pushing the instrument to its limits and re-examining the myriad of tones it has to offer, Judith will startle and amaze with this performance.

A feast for the eyes and ears, this MLab performance combines visual art with musical artistry.
Join visual artist Lena Czerniawska as she draws to the sounds of vibraphonist Emilio Gordoa, electro-acoustic musician Josten Myburgh and percussionist Michael McNab.
Watch as their crystalline, complex and delicate improvised music comes to life before your very eyes.
The harmony of sounds created by these talented musicians stands at the edge of distortion and feedback, in a space where the electronic emulates the acoustic and vice versa.
Together, they are Mahagonny.

Snooze suspended by a hanging woollen pod in this fantastical art installation.
Hypnapod consists of groups of hanging pods, 3D knitted from wool and fitted with sensors which record the occupant’s pulse. These sensors trigger calming acoustic and electronic beats which create a unique and evolving song. As audience members become aware of their own and others’ heartbeats, pulses synchronise, connecting and relaxing participants.
Experience this uniquely beautiful installation created by the Unconscious Collective, a Hobart-based artist collaboration. Their work explores subliminal communication, as well as hypnagogic states such as dreams and visions.

In this new work by renowned artistic director Catherine Simmonds, the voices and experiences of international students take centre stage.
As they perform their own stories, Melbourne international students reveal the issues impacting their lives in Australia. The scenes performed serve as a catalyst for conversation between international students, staff, and the wider community in a facilitated discussion following the performance.
Revealing the challenges faced by international students in brutal, unrelenting honesty, this performance aims to inspire open and honest communication.

Vivien Sutanto’s passion for food flourished from a young age. She is part of a culinary tradition that stretches back to the 13th century when Chinese sailors migrated to the Malay Archipelago resulting in a gastronomic fusion of Indonesian ingredients with traditional Chinese cooking techniques.
She has a book’s worth of recipes handed down to her from her Malaysian Nyonya grandmother and aunties, as well as her Indonesian Nyonya Chinese mother-in-law and aunties.
This culinary tradition, known as Peranakan or Nyonya, provides a plethora of delicious dishes, including chap chye stir-fried vegetables, ayam masak merah (chicken “cooked red” in dried chilli sambal), and babi kecap pork braised in sweet soy sauce.
Vivien will host a once-in-a-lifetime cooking demonstration, teaching you how to cook these unique and delightful meals. This demonstration is part of the Herb Feith Conference taking place at Monash University from 1-3 October.

As a child, Jayanto would sit and watch his Peranakan mother delicately fold papers into Yuanbao Lanterns. These lanterns imitate the gold ingot currency of Imperial China and announced good luck. In Ritual Looking For The Enlightenment, Jayanto recreates these lanterns to express personal experiences of ‘otherness’.
As a Chinese-Indonesian immigrant living in Sydney, Jayanto aims to bring the timeless wisdom of meditation to contemporary Australia. This work is an expression of identity and a celebration of liberation and creative freedom; it proposes a bridge from past
to present, from trauma to healing, to a diverse future not of difference but togetherness.
Jayanto is an emerging visual artist whose practice blends Eastern and Western mythologies with the reality of current events. His practice offers a sentiment of mixed spirituality and sharing through interactive performance installation.
This installation is part of the Herb Feith Conference taking place at Monash University from 1-3 October.

Prudence Melom arrived in Australia as a refugee in 2007, only speaking two words of English. Now she’s the CEO of the non-for-profit organisation E-RACED. An advocate for social change, Prudence believes that we can eliminate racism through storytelling, one story at a time. For Diversity and Inclusion Week, Prudence will share her personal story of becoming a refugee and her work with E-RACED.
E-RACED harnesses the power of narrative to inform and engage. Using a team of story-tellers sharing their personal experiences as refugees or migrants, the program enables local
students to meet people from other countries and cultures. The program provides students with a face for events or cultures that they may have only seen on their television in an attempt to erase misconceptions and stereotypes.

After William Shakespeare
Bloody. Bold. Resolute. Out of the wreckage of a brutal war, Macbeth rises to power. Ancient forces foreshadow his future, yet it is his wife who provokes it into being. Desire blurs reality, propelling this ill-suited couple to greatness and onwards to their downfall.
Something’s been lost in translation in the 500 years since Shakespeare wrote his cursed play. Language has evolved, theatre has changed, but weak men still take power and our innate wicked desires remain.
What will it take to overthrow them?
Devised by current Monash students, this performance unearths the foundations of Shakespeare’s theatre.
Hang those who talk of fear: This is Macbeth.

Experience the virtual world of Valerie Sparks, an artist at the forefront of virtual reality art.
Beginning her practice in photo-media installations, Valerie expanded her practice to include immersive works viewed through virtual reality headsets and the Cave Automatic Virtual Environment. Her work moves between scans of buildings and vistas to the delicate and complex interiors of plants and seed pods.
Influenced by the aesthetics of immersive environments, including frescoes, glass houses and 19th century wallpapers, Valerie’s work references historical imagery and artefacts.
For the Monash MPavilion Semester 2 Program, Valerie has been commissioned to build a three-dimensional virtual world to be viewed through a virtual reality headset.
