From the DirectorI am proud to share with you the artists and speakers who comprise the NINth SeaSoN of the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for thePerforming Arts, UC Davis. The season is both classic and contemporary. It is filled with well-established stars and artists just coming on the horizon, bringing the best from the U.S. and the entire globe. We’ll move seamlessly from classical and baroque, to bluegrass and jazz and almost all points in between. To paraphrase Duke Ellington, we promise to deliver only GoodMuSIC, Not the other kINd.

I remain very careful about applying the term VIrtuoSo, but I encourage you to take a quick look at some of the talent we’ve assembled for this season and reach your own conclusions:• Two genre-crossing super trios that speak for themselves: Zakir Hussain, Béla Fleck, and Edgar Meyer Mark O’Connor, John Patitucci, and Julian Lage• Pianist Yefim Bronfman, who Esa-Pekka Salonen says “can play better than most other people on the planet”• Jazz guitar gods Bill Frisell and John Scofield• Violinist Robert McDuffie, the inspiration for Philip Glass’s new American Four Seasons

Each musician above is a true MaSter of hIS INStruMeNt—

and that’s only a short list of the many Mondavi Center artists that could easily make the cut. With 63 productions and 93 total PerforMaNCeS, there is much more on the schedule than I can possibly capture here.

I do hope you will decide to take a journey of discovery and enjoyment with us.

P.S. Remember, by purchasing a SerIeS SubSCrIPtIoN or ChooSe-your-oWN PlaN, you’ll secure the beSt SeatS at the very beSt PrICe. Just one more reason to buy early!

For more than 30 years, Kronos Quartet has pursued a singular artistic vision, combining a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to expanding the range and context of the string quartet. The group’s exploration of the ambient, ethereal music of Icelandic band Sigur Rós underscores the narrow distance between contemporary classical music and instrumental rock. The program also features music from Kronos’s contribution to the soundtrack of Darren Aronofsky’s film The Fountain.

Slick, nostalgic, and unmistakably modern, Berlin-based Max Raabe & Palast Orchester bring Weimar-era cabaret to life, channeling the high style and musical glory of the 1920s and 1930s with uncanny precision, drama, and humor. Playing a mix of German and American standards, the elegant, ironic Raabe and his talented 12-piece band provide an unparalleled, unexpected evening’s entertainment.

Singer-songwriter Stew’s career took an unexpected turn in 2006. After a successful career fronting his two critically acclaimed bands, Stew and The Negro Problem, with collaborator Heidi Rodewald, he transformed his life story into the musical Passing Strange. The show, which debuted at the Berkeley Rep, won a Tony Award for “Best Book of a Musical,” and two Obies. A four-time Tony nominee, Stew returns to his rock and roll roots for this double shot of shows.

Max Raabe & Palast Orchester

dIreCtor’S ChoICeeach season it is my pleasure to put together a director’s Choice series. for 2010–2011, I’mpleased to present an eclectic mix of performers that range from Weimar cabaret to art rock. Some of these performers may be unknown to you, but I believe they are among the mostinteresting artists working today.

author and star of his autobiographical rock happening Passing Strange, Stew is about assmart as rock gets these days. hearing him in the intimate Vanderhoef Studio theatre will be a real treat. Speaking of smart rock, kronos Quartet returns to the Mondavi Center with an amazing program that features Icelandic rock group Sigur rós’s beautiful and atmospheric instrumental rock music. My final director’s Choice is the droll and fantastic Max raabe and Palast orchester. like the trockadero ballet company we presented in 2010, raabe’s Weimar republic cabaret performances combine absolute virtuosity (yes, there’s that word again) with the ability to make you laugh as well, with the occasional britney Spears cover. I hope you join me for director’s Choice—performances that I believe will be well enjoyed and long remembered.

In this world pre-miere tour, they join with violinist Robert McDuffie to present two distinct visions of Vivaldi’s master work: first a performance of the original Four Seasons, followed by the McDuffie-commissioned Philip Glass composition, The American Four Seasons.

“The first performance of the work—Violin Concerto No. 2, ‘The American [Four] Seasons’—was so spectacularly played by the new piece’s muse, American violinist Robert McDuffie...that the event turned into one of the most exciting musical evenings of the year.”—Toronto Star

gérard Depardieu stars in this stunning French period piece as the elderly Marin Marais, a 17th-Century composer looking back on his life, both as a musician and a lover. The movie, based on a true story, features music by Marais and his teacher Sainte Colombe, all played by acclaimed viola da gamba player Jordi Savall.

All three films are also related to each other in their use of music that transcends the “soundtrack” tag; instead, the work of Terence blanchard, marin marais, sainte colombe, and stephan Zacharias takes a central role in the aesthetic experience. in addition, don’t miss the two free screenings that tie in with the Director’s choice series (page 4): Passing strange and Heima.

In his final 10 days, Adolf Hitler raged against his powerlessness to stop the fall of Berlin, and with it, World War II and the Third reich. Housed in a bunker underneath the city, he cajoled his generals and isolated himself with his mistress eva Braun, as the situation left him increasingly unhinged. An intense, award-winning performance by Bruno ganz as Hitler is the centerpiece of the film, which is based on numerous books, most notably the first-hand account of Traudl Junge, one of Hitler’s secretaries.

Campus engagementCaMpUs engageMent

The Mondavi Center is the only performing arts center in our region that can draw on the intellectual and creative resources of a major research university. This connection to UC Davis benefits not only the campus community, but all who attend the Mondavi Center by providing occasions where campus artists and experts help us better understand the arts and speakers the Mondavi Center presents.

Activities such as the free series of panel discussions in the Forum@MC series, Pre-Performance Talks (PPT), and Post-Performance Question and Answer sessions (Q&A) regularly draw on campus experts to provide enlightenment and context for our audience members.

The Madness and Music Festival this October (see page 32), is a co-presentation with the UC Davis Department of Music. The festival celebrates the 200th anniversary of Robert Schumann’s birth, and involves an exciting mix of our extraordinary faculty, touring artists, and the development of new work by selected festival composition fellows. The festival is our most extensive and ambitious collaboration ever with another UC Davis department, and a model for things to come.

The Mondavi Center is once again proud to participate in the UC Davis Campus Community Book Project, as part of our continuing contribution to UC Davis’s Principles of Community. Community members are encouraged to read Beverly Daniel Tatum’s Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria, and to take part in a variety of activities related to the shared experience of reading the book. We encourage our audiences to learn more about these important UC Davis initiatives at:

partnerships

The Mondavi Center has developed partnerships with some of the great arts organizations of our day. Our relationship with the Curtis Institute of Music, arguably the finest music school in the land, enters its third year with “Curtis On Tour” bringing amazing young musicians to perform in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre.

In 2010-11 we begin a new phase of our long-time connection with the San Francisco Symphony, which will appear twice on our orchestra series, the second time with its wonderful chorus in the Bach B Minor Mass. We expect each of these appearances to develop into a mini-residency in Davis, with musicians from the SFS mentoring local and university musicians during their stay.

Having one of the greatest orchestras in the world as a neighbor and a partner is a musical blessing, as is our similar relationship with the amazing San Francisco Opera. This year that partnership blossoms with an HD screening of SFO’s wonderful production of La Rondine, by Puccini, featuring Angela Gheorghiu. In addition, two outstanding young singers, David Lomeli and Karen Slack, current and former SFO Adler Fellows, join the UC Davis Symphony under Christian Baldini in a special concert that honors Barbara K. Jackson’s commitment to young artists (Barbara is also sponsoring this concert, enabling us to offer it free to the community).

we believe that by developing these deeper relationships with artists, arts organizations, and our campus community, our programming is enriched and our audiences are the beneficiaries.
