Learning Disability Week 2018Monday 14th - Sunday 20th May

My Generation!

What is Learning Disability Week and why does it matter?Learning Disability Week is a chance to focus attention on the lives of people with learning disabilities in Scotland. It is a chance to raise awareness of issues and inequalitie, achievements and talents. The week matters because there are over 125,000 people in Scotland who have learning disabilities, and raising awareness provides a real chance to change attitudes, making Scotland a better, fairer and more equal place for everyone.

How can I get involved? We encourage people to celebrate the week in whatever way suits them best. You could organise a meeting or event in your community, use the materials in this pack to make a display in a public place, spread the word on social media, fundraise for a cause of your choice, or just have a big party!

You could also take part in our ‘Show and Tell’ campaign. All you need to do is find an object from your youth that is important to you. This could include a fa-vourite toy, a photo from a family holiday, or any other memento that you feel sums up your generation. Then:

- Take a photo of yourself with your object and send it to us using #LDWeek2018- Organise a meeting or event where people can share the story of their object- Paint, write, sing, dance or speak about the symbol of your generation and share the news with us!

Where can I find more information? If you are stuck for ideas, we will be sharing the event listings from last years Learning Disability Week on our website for inspiration! Our website will also have lots of information about the national Learning Disability Awards, which will be held during the week. You can also email [email protected] or call us on 0141 248 3733 if you have any questions.

My environment -‘My place, my planet’

What is Scottish Learning Disability Week and why does it matter?

Scottish Learning Disability Week is a chance to focus attention on the lives of people with learning disabilities in Scotland. It is a chance to raise awareness of people’s achievements and talents, as well as issues and inequalities they may experience. The Week is a real chance to change attitudes, and to make Scotland a better, fairer and more equal place for everyone.

How can I get involved?

We encourage people to celebrate the Week in whatever way suits them best. You could follow the hashtag #LDWeekScot2020 on social media and spread the word, or use the materials in this pack to make a display in a public place. This year’s theme is My environment – ‘My place, my planet’.

We live in a beautiful country on an amazing planet, and we all should be able to have a voice in keeping it that way.

‘My place, my planet’• My place - ‘place’ means where you live and the environment around you.

Maybe you live in a house, a flat or in supported accommodation. Whether we live in a city, a town or in the countryside, we all want to live in a clean and attractive place.

• My planet - ‘planet’ means the wider environment which we all share and which many people are trying to protect from the effects of climate change. Climate change is when the environment around us changes for the worse because of things that people do. What can you do when you are out and about in your local area to help the environment?

Using the contents of your packWe want to make sure that everyone has the information they need to make the most of their ‘Get Involved’ pack. We hope that the instructions below will help!

Hosting a ‘Make and Take’ Communi-Tea party

We’re bringing back the learning disability Communi-Tea party by popular demand! However this time it has an environmentally-friendly twist...

Simply get a group of people together, such as family, friends, colleagues, or people from a club or group you attend. Then find a venue where everyone can come together during Scottish Learning Disability Week. This might be a community hall, a place of worship, a local sports club, or a workplace.

The idea is to make something and bring it along to the party and then to take something home with you that somebody else has brought along.

Things you could make:• Some home-cooked food or baking (have a look at our ‘Lovely Leftovers’

recipe card)• Something crafty, like a handmade greeting card, a candle, or a decoration• A plant that you have grown• A piece of clothing or a toy you have made or knitted• Something made out of recycled materials (have a look at our ‘Green

Goodies’ card).

You can use the materials in the ‘Get Involved’ pack to help you host a ‘Make and Take’ Communi-Tea party. There are lots of things you can do to get everyone involved, such as:

• Hang the bunting and put up the posters around your venue• Use the Lovely Leftovers recipe card to make your own tasty food and

snacks• Have a go at playing the ‘Green Games’ on the SCLD website.

Remember to tell us how your ‘Make and Take’ went by sending photos to [email protected] or by posting your photos, videos and live stories on social media using the hashtag #LDWeekScot2020.

Make your own Uno!During this year’s Scottish Learning Disability Week we are running a competition to find the best ‘recycled’ Uno the Unicorn, our Scottish Learning Disability Week mascot.

All you need to do is get your hands on some items that are widely recycled (things like plastic bottles, newspapers and magazines and cardboard) and then get creative by making Uno completely out of items that you would normally recycle. You could also collect items and materials to make your Uno. It’s up to you!

After you have finished making your Uno, take a photo of him and share it with us, along with your name and a description of what your Uno is made out of.

We will announce the competition winner at the Scottish Learning Disability Awards on Friday 22nd May 2020!

The competition closing date is Thursday 9th April 2020.

• Post* your photo on Twitter,

Facebook or Instagram tag SCLD (see our social media handles on page 4) and use the hashtag #LDWeekScot2020

• Email your photo to [email protected]

• Post your photo to SCLD (our address is below).

Think about...• Try to make sure that the recycled materials you are using are clean • Please make sure that there are no sharp edges or items that could cause

cuts or injury

Ways to share your Uno:

Our address:Scottish Commission for Learning DisabilitySuite 5.277 Nelson Mandela PlaceGlasgowG2 1QY

*Please note that if you share your Uno via social media and are chosen as the winner of the competition, we will contact you via the social media profile you used. • You can use things like paints, glue, colouring pencils and crayons todecorate your recycled Uno. If you can, try to use art supplies that areenvironmentally-friendly, for example choosing non-toxic glue

• If you decide to post a photo of your Uno please try to print on recycleablepaper.

Find out more about Uno the UnicornYou can find out all about Uno and Stephen Dickson, an artist from Glasgow, who won our mascot design competition back in 2018.

Put up the Scottish Learning Disability Week posters in places where people and communities come together. Why not take them to the local coffee shop, ask to put them up on the community notice board at your local supermarket, library or community centre, or any other public place you visit where lots of people can see them?

You can download and print more copies of our A4 poster on the SCLD website if you need them. Also, don’t forget to send us photos of your poster display - we’d love to share it!

Where can I find more information? If you are stuck for ideas, keep an eye on our website for the latest updates, including a ‘What’s On’ Guide for Scottish Learning Disability Week! Our website will also have lots of information about the Scottish Learning Disability Awards, which will be held during Scottish Learning Disability Week (Monday 18th - Sunday 24th May).

You can email [email protected] or call us on 0141 248 3733 if you have any questions.
