His dam Penfection (Orpen), who was Listed-placed, has already produced the Listed scorer Baby Revolution (High Chaparral) and the Stakes-placed Belly To Belly (Dubawi). GIGGINSTOWN’S DEATH DOES HIS DUTY IN NAVAN FEATUREDeath Duty, who won the Gr.2 Monksfield Novice Hurdle last month, added another Graded win to his CV with a confident victory in the Gr.2 Navan Novice Hurdle, the feature race at Navan yesterday. The five-year-old son of Shantou was held up behind the leader Monalee (Milan) and, though he was not fluent four out, he recovered quickly to take the lead approaching the penultimate flight. Once in command, he kept on well on the run to the line to score by three and three quarters of a length from Monalee.

Following his win, Death Duty was shortened in price to aroun 5-2 favourite for the Gr.1 Spa Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

He comes from the first South American crop of the Gr.1 St Leger winner Sixties Icon, who recently returned safely to his Northern Hemisphere home at Norman Court Stud, where he will stand this season at a fee of £5,000. DIEGO H MITAGSTEIN

TIME TO CHOOSE LEADS HIS STABLEMATES HOMEThe Botti armada finished the Italian Stakes season on a high note with a 1-2-3 in the Listed Premio UNIRE yesterday at Agnano. The three-year-old colt Time To Choose (Manduro) provided Champion trainer Alduino Botti with his 38th win from 79 Stakes races when outstaying his stablemates Genovese (Strategic Prince) and Right Connection (Beat Hollow).

The old star Priore Philip set a genuine pace but failed to pick up when Time To Choose moved to the outside with Genovese. Jockey Fabio Branca just pushed Time To Choose to the front and the colt strolled home to score by a length and half from Genovese, as Right Connection ran on to clinch third.

Time To Choose, bred by Razza del Velino, just failed to record his first Stakes win when beaten a nose by Way To Paris (Champs

Trainer Gordon Elliott said, “He’s done it well and we like him a lot. I thought he’d improved a bit from the last day and Bryan [Cooper, jockey] said he was on the bridle more this time. He will go now for the Gr.1 [Lawlors Hotel] novice hurdle at Naas [8th January]. He looks an Albert Bartlett type.”

Death Duty, bred by Geoffrey Thompson and a Tattersalls Ireland graduate, is a half-brother to the winning hurdler How About It (Kayf Tara) and is out of the Listed-placed bumper and hurdles winner Midnight Gift (Presenting). The second dam is an unraced half-sister to the Stakes-winning jumpers Shannon Spray (Le Bavard; dam of the Gr.2-winning chaser Eirespray) and Renagown (Pragmatic) and the Gr.1-winning chaser One Knight.

FUTURE CHAMPIONS FLAT RACEElliott and owners Gigginstown House Stud completed a big race double at Navan when their Samcro won the Listed Future Champions Flat Race and was the fourth winner on the card for Elliott, who also took the Listed race at Thurles. The four-year-old son of Germany, who won a Punchestown bumper last month, made all the running and, though pressed for the last quarter of a mile by Good Thyne Tara (Kayf Tara), kept on well to score narrowly by half a length, following in the footsteps of this stablemates Death Duty, who won the race last year, and Don Cossack (Sholokhov), who landed the 2011 renewal.

Samcro is likely to be lightly-campaigned this season, but could run next at either Fairyhouse or Punchestown.

Bred by Douglas Taylor and a Goffs and Goffs UK graduate (the highest-priced at the Aintree Sale), he is out of the unraced Dun Dun (Saddlers’ Hall), a full-sister to the Gr.2 Reynoldstown Novice Chase winner Master Of The Hall and the Gr.2 Rendlesham Hurdle-third Featherbed Lane, and a half-sister to the Gr.2 Tim Duggan Memorial Hurdle Chase winner Pairofbrowneyes (Luso), and comes from the family of the multiple Gr.1-winning chaser Sound Man (Kemal).

EBF BOREEN BELLE MARES NOVICE HURDLEShattered Love took advantage of the third-last flight departure of the hot favourite Asthuria (Sagacity) to take the Listed EBF Boreen Belle Mares Novice Hurdle at Thurles to complete a clean sweep of National Hunt Stakes races in Ireland yesterday by Gordon Elliott and Gigginstown House Stud.

There was little between the pair when Asthuria crashed out, leaving the five-year-old daughter of Yeats well clear of Kalopsia and Catcheragain, both by Flemensfirth. The last named, who was pursing Shattered Love in vain, fell at the last, leaving Kalopsia to collect the second prize money.

Jockey Jack Kennedy said: “She jumped and travelled away and I was still going all right when Paul [Townend, on Asthuria] fell and I’m not sure how it would have worked out. She is a nice mare and is progressive and I was happy enough with how I was going [at the third-last]. She’d stay further.”

Elliott added: “It worked out great for us, but she deserved it. We’ll keep her in mares’ races this season.”

The victory was much-deserved on the part of Shattered Love, who has put up some good performances in Stakes company, including a third in the Gr.2 mares’ bumper at the Grand National meeting.

Bred by Limetree Stud and a Tattersalls Ireland graduate, she is a half-sister to the dual Gr.2-winning hurdler/chaser Make A Track (Hernando) and the Gr.2 Charlie Hall Chase winner Irish

published by Rinaldo PublishingISBN: 978-0956664211The author of the masterly work that is Bayardo: The Life, Times and Legacy of an Edwardian Champion, Peter Corbett has delivered a second masterpiece in his Bahram & The Aga Khan III. Not content with confining himself to the Herculean exploits of the undefeated 1935 Triple Crown hero, Corbett treats the reader to verdant and sensitive descriptions of the lives of his regal owner-breeder, legendary trainer Frank Butters and jockey Freddie Fox. Then plunges into an extraordinarily detailed exposition of the careers of Bahram, his sire and dam Blandford and Friar’s Daughter and his finest sons Turkhan, Big Game and Persian Gulf, all not just diligently and exquisitely researched but delivered with such effervescent fluency that the subjects spring to wondrous life before one’s very eyes. Finally, the sweet icing on the cake, Nigel Pullen’s magnificent appendices, over 80 pages of meticulous analysis of Bahram’s stud career and heritage. A sumptuous 640 pages, with 59 photographs, Bahram & The Aga Khan III is both a stirring treatise of one of the most talented horses in racing history and an invaluable pedigree reference work to treasure. Satono Ares (Deep Impact) was settled at the rear of the field during the early stages and still had plenty to do rounding the bend into the straight. He began to make good headway, though looked green and hung slightly right. He was sent about his business in the last 200m, taking the lead and holding on to win by half a length from Monde Can Know (Kinshasa No Kiseki), who was closing with every stride.

The winner needed three starts to lose his maiden tag, which he did in September, and that was followed by victory in a conditions race three weeks ago, and following yesterday’s win will be crowned Champion Two-Year-Old Champion Colt. He is trained by Kazuo Fujisawa, for whom he was his 24th Gr.1 winner and is also a stablemate of Soul Stirring (Frankel), who took the Gr.1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies Stakes last week. Fujisawa thus became the first trainer to capture both races in the same year.

He is the third foal of his Irish-born dam Satona Amazones (Danehill), who won at three and is a full-sister to the Gr.2 Maribyrnong Plate winner Langoustine and the Gr.3

Porter ACROSS THE POND

PORTER’S PERFORMER OF THE WEEKPOINT PIPER (USA), 6h,

Giant’s Causeway – Imagine (Sadler’s Wells) O: A Kuehne, Gatto Racing LLC, P Russo, M Schlalch, et al, B: Barronstown Stud, T: Jerenesto Torrez $80,000 Fasig-Tipton Summer Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale by Jose Luis Espinoza consigned by Kingswood Farm

Prior to the weekend, Point Piper had made all nine of his 2016 starts in Graded Stakes. On that basis, one might think the drop into Listed company for the Los Alamitos Winter Challenge Stakes represented some class relief. In fact, it was just the opposite, as the Winter Challenge was a race put on to give North America’s highest-earning racehorse, and likely 2016 Horse of the Year, California Chrome a prep for next month’s Pegasus World Cup. California Chrome duly cruised home twelve lengths clear, setting a new track-record for the nine furlongs, despite spending most of the race five-wide. While unable to prevent the Champion disappearing into the distance, Point Piper did finish “best of the race”, taking second, three lengths clear of the third horse.

Point Piper, who began his career in Ireland, had set a new track-record when powering home to take the Gr. 3 Longacres Mile Handicap at Emerald Downs by 43/4 lengths back in August. This year has also seen him take second in the Gr. 3 Native Diver Stakes at Del Mar, and thirds in Gr.3 Mineshaft Handicap and Gr. 2 Californian Stakes.

Point Piper is a full-brother to Viscount Nelson, whose credits include a win in the Gr.2 Al Fahidi Fort Stakes, two Irish Listed wins, and thirds in the Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas and Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes. He is also a half-brother to the ill-fated Gr.1 Grand Criterium victor Horatio Nelson, the Group winner Kitty Matchem, and the Gr.1-placed Red Rock Canyon. Point Piper’s dam, Imagine, won the Gr.1 Oaks and Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas and is a half-sister to another dual Classic hero in Generous, who took the Gr.1 Derby, Gr.1 Irish Derby and Gr.1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Others under the second dam include brilliant sprinter/miler Moonlight Cloud and the Japanese 2,000 Guineas winner Dee Majesty.

WESTERN RESERVE (USA), 4g, Indian Charlie – Visit (Oasis Dream) O: Marc Detampel B: Juddmonte Farms Inc, T: Brad H Cox $87,000 2016 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale by Marc Detampel consigned by Mill Ridge Sales

Sold for $87,000 as a racing prospect in the 2016 Keeneland November Sales, Western Reserve earned back $45,000 of that expenditure on his first start since changing hands, getting home first in a wild finish to the Buddy Diliberto Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds, the margin being a pair of noses and a neck. He began his career in Britain, where he won a maiden at Chelmsford City and a handicap at Newmarket in five starts. In North America, he made his debut last year, finishing fourth in the Gr.2 Autumn Stakes at Woodbine. This year he had made eight previous starts, winning an allowance/optional claiming event at Belmont in June and taking two seconds and three thirds, including the minor award in the Old Friends Stakes at Kentucky Downs.

Western Reserve’s dam, Visit, was a high-class performer on both sides of the Atlantic, winning the Gr.3 Princess Margaret Stakes and Gr.3 Oak Tree Stakes, and earning Gr.1 placings on both continents, including when second in the Gr.1 Gamely Stakes and Gr.1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes. A half-sister to the Gr.1 Pretty Polly Stakes winner Promising Lead, and to the dam of group winner Commemorative, Visit is out of the Stakes winner Arrive, a Broodmare of the Year, and a sister to the even more celebrated producer Hasili.

SANDIVA (Ire), 5m, Footstepsinthesand – Miss Corinne (Mark of Esteem) O: Al Shaqab Racing, B: Denis McDonnell, T: Todd A Pletcher £18,000s DBS Premier Yearling Sale by O’Ryan/Middleham Park consigned by Parkway Farm

Sandiva’s profitable 2016 season concluded on Saturday with a second in the South Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. She had previously taken the Gr.3 Marshua’s River Stakes on her 2016 debut, and then finished second in the Gr.2 Royal Delta Stakes and third in the Gr.2 Honey Fox Stakes. Sandiva began her US career in 2014, having won four of eight starts in Europe, including the Gr.3 Nell Gwyn Stakes, Gr.3 Prix du Calvados and the Listed Naas Fillies’ Sprint, and a second in the Gr.3 Albany Stakes.

Sandiva is a half-sister to Wentworth, a multiple winner in England and a black-type scorer in Scandinavia, and to Irish Cliff, a Listed-placed performer in France, who was also Champion Imported Two-Year-Old Filly in Spain. The grandam, Percy’s Girl, gained black-type with a second in the Listed Doonside Cup and is a sister to the Group scorer Percy’s Lass (dam of the Gr.1 Derby victor Sir Percy and grandam of Mikhail Glinka, who has Group wins all over Europe and Dubai to his credit). Percy’s Girl is also a half-sister to Braiswick, whose triumphs included the Gr.1 E P Taylor Stakes.

$22,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by Calvin L Johnston consigned by Gainesway

On her debut, Triple Chelsea suggested that she might be better than the average horse, scoring by five lengths in a maiden claimer at Churchill Downs last November last year. She return to kick off 2016 with a fourth in an allowance/optional claiming event at Tampa Bay Downs in January, then followed up with a win at the same venue the next month. Unplaced in the Austintown Filly Sprint Stakes at Mahoning Valley Race Course, she clocked up a third in the L’Etoile du Nord Stakes at Canterbury Park (a non-black-type Stakes race) in April. Successful in a claiming event at Arlington and an allowance/optional claiming event at Kentucky Downs, the three-year-old then added a third in an allowance at Churchill Downs. On Saturday, Triple Chelsea joined the ranks of black-type winners with a neck victory in the five furlong Lightning City Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.

Triple Chelsea is out of the French-bred and raced Oceane Music, winner of the Listed Prix Amandine at Deauville. The grandam, Si Siymphonie, won the Listed Prix Jacques de Bremond and was third in the Gr.3 Prix de la Porte Maillot.

EXCILLY (GB), 4f, Excellent Art – Afra Tsitsi (Belong To Me) O: The Elkstone Group, B: Haras du Cadran, Pierre Hoze & Carlos Lerner, T: Christophe Clement

One place behind Sandiva was British-bred Excilly. She started her career in Britain, where she won a maiden, a handicap and the Listed Eternal Stakes at Carslisle, and was third in the Gr.3 Prix de Lieurey. She spent last winter in Dubai, when she took second in the Gr.2 Cape Verdi Stakes and third in the Gr.3 Balanchine Stakes, before returning for a pair of unplaced efforts in Britain and Germany. She started twice, finishing unplaced both times, at Saratoga in August and on her only other outing took second in an allowance/optional claiming test at Belmont Park.

Excilly is out of Afra Tsitsi, a winning daughter of the Listed October Stakes winner Jafn. In turn, she is a half-sister to Tout Est Permis, a Group winner in Germany and a Listed winner in France.

Fresnay has a yearling colt by Sea The Stars (400,000gns Tattersalls December Foal Sale by Shadwell), who will be trained by Roger Varian and holds an entry in the 2018 Derby. The twelve-year-old broodmare has a filly foal by Sea The Stars and returned to him again this season. Franco Raimondi

Oriental Arrow (Dark Angel), who started her career in France and was placed once in five starts, returned to Italy and blitzed home with a brilliant turn of foot to beat the newcomer Rose Velvet (Poet’s Voice). Her dam Samya (Invincible Spirit) won her first four races, including the Listed Premio Torricola, but failed to show her best in the Gr.3 Premio Regina Elena. Her broodmare record now stands at four winners from four foals, the best of whom is the three-year-old colt Streetcore (Footstepsinthesand), who won once at two and was fourth in the Listed Criterium di Pisa. The second dam Special Society (Imp Society) won three races and produced six others winners, none at Stakes level. She is a half-sister to the Gr.2-placed Savage (Polish Patriot), the dam of the Gr.3 winner, Classic-placed and sire Soul City (Elusive City).

WE Bloodstock purchased Samya’s yearling, a colt by Camelot, for €45,000 at Goffs November Sale. The twelve-year-old broodmare has a filly foal by Camelot and is in foal to New Approach.

Mister Delfio (Sydney’s Candy), second last time out at Capannelle, ran prominently and scored an easy win despite the shorter trip. He will stay further and develop into a decent performer. His dam Irish Smoke (Smoke Glacken) won the Gr.1 Spinaway Stakes for trainer Patrick Biancone at two, but was disappointing after her move to Richard Dutrow’s yard following her $750,000 purchase by IEAH Stables. She is already the dam of two winners, headed by Ice Cutter (Medaglia D’Oro), who won three times and earned more than $184,000. The second dam Added Time (Gilded Time) produced the minor Stakes winner King Puma (Forest Wildcat) and her unraced daughter Clever Babe (Distorted Humor) is responsible for the very fast racemare Book Review (Giant’s Causeway), who won the Gr.1 La Brea Stakes.

Irish Smoke has a colt foal by Take Charge Indy.

The freshman sire Bated Breath (Dansili) celebrated his 18th individual winner thanks to Breathing. The colt, much improved from his debut three weeks ago, forced the pace and stayed on well despite running a bit green. He is a half-brother to Freetown (Speightstown), who won the Listed Premio Alberto Giubilo and
