Thursday 29th St Peter and St Paul,

Apostles Jesus said to Peter ‘Who do you say that I am?’ Peter

answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living

God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon

son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to

you, but my Father in heaven. (Matthew 16.15-17)

We pray for the Christian Church throughout the world. On the Ember days we pray for the many men and women who will be ordained at Petertide, including Sebastian Harries being ordained Priest and Shahriar Ashrafkhorasani, being ordained Deacon. Eternal God and Father, you create us by your power and redeem us by your love: guide and strengthen us by your Spirit that we may give ourselves in love and service to one another and to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Collect for Monday Morning Prayer, Celebrating Common Prayer)

We give thanks - St John the Baptist. We pray for the sisters of the Community of St John the Baptist at Ripon College, Cuddesdon - for the example of St Peter, for his passion and loyalty to Christ, and for his courage to keep going in spite of his mistakes and failures. We give thanks for all that he did to lay the foundations of the Christian Church - St Paul. Tradition holds that Peter and Paul were martyred within a very short time of each other in AD60. We also give thanks for - St Alban (22nd), the first English Martyr (died 250) - St Irenaeus (28th) , Bishop of Lyons (died c 200).

We give thanks for our local community, for all those who work hard to support it and to bring people together, including all those involved with The Flying Goose and the Festival Committee.

We pray for all concerned about future building developments in the Parish

We pray - for the different areas and organisations of our Parish (listed in the separate sheet).

At Petertide we give special thanks for our Church of St Peter’s, for its witness in this place over many centuries, and for all those who have served here.

We pray for - our partner church of All Saints’, Wytham - the churches in our Ecumenical Partnership and the Cutteslowe Church Partnership:- Wolvercote Baptist Church, St Michael’s, the United Reformed Church, St Andrew’s - other churches in this area, including the Jesus Army, the Roman Catholic Church of St Gregory and St Augustine, the Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity and the Annunciation (Canterbury Road) - the Cutteslowe/Templar Road services - our link parish of St Chad’s, Taung, in the Diocese of Kimberley and Kuruman, and its priest, Father Tsabeng.

We pray for our church community:- - for our Ministers and all who help lead worship - for the Churchwardens, PCC and other committee members - for all who work for and give time to the church - for all the members of the congregation – that each may recognise his or her value and place in Christ’s ministry in this place.

We give thanks for William Whyte, recently licensed to our Parish, and welcome him warmly. We give thanks - for the completion of the new organ - for all who helped out while we had no Director of Music.

We look forward to welcoming our new Director of Music in July.

We pray for the sick, those recently bereaved, and those who have died recently.

We continue to give thanks for the revelation of God as Father, Son and Spirit, and pray that, by being open to the Spirit, the worldwide Church may be reunited around Christ's table.

We give thanks - for God's Creation, for its diversity and beauty, and all that it provides for us - for green spaces and areas of beauty - for our rivers, seas and oceans with their diversity of life.

We pray - for a greater sense of responsibility for our stewardship of God's Creation - that we may be moved to share what we have more generously with others. - for all people who suffer as a result of the unfair distribution of world resources, or as a result of climate change.

We give thanks and pray for - all people who work at sea, and for those who support them, including the Mission to Seafarers - those who try to bring about just agricultural and trade policies - all people who work for preservation of the environment - all people who work to try to ensure that everyone has enough to eat, including those who organise food banks and those who work for famine relief and to encourage self-sufficiency.

We give thanks that we are surrounded by areas of great natural beauty and we pray for all those who work to preserve our local environment.

We pray for the parishes of St Mary Magdalene, St Thomas the Martyr with St Frideswide & Binsey, St Ebbe with Holy Trinity & St Peter le Bailey.

In July we give thanks for

- St Thomas, whose questioning allowed Jesus to reveal so much of who he is. We pray for honesty and courage in seeking for the truth, and for all people wrestling with doubt - Mary Magdalene, who was the first to see Jesus risen from the dead. We give thanks for women's ministries, and pray for the newly-appointed women bishops - St James, one of the three disciples closest to Jesus - Anne and Joachim, Mary’s parents according to tradition. We pray for all parents and all who take care of children - Mary, Martha and Lazarus, friends of our Lord. We give thanks for the gift of friendship. We pray for our own friends and for people who feel that they have no friends

also - 11th St Benedict of Nursia, (died c.550). He is often called ‘the Father of Western monasticism’. We pray for all Benedictines - 14th John Keble (1866), Priest and Poet. We pray for Keble College - 19th St Gregory (c 394), Bishop of Nyssa - 30th William Wilberforce (1833), Social Reformer. We give thanks for his work for the abolition of slavery. We pray for those fighting against modern-day slavery and for those kept in slavery - 31st St Ignatius of Loyola (1556). We pray for the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits).

Almighty God, whose way is in the sea and whose paths are

in the great waters; be present, we beseech thee, with our

brethren in the manifold dangers of the deep; protect them

from all perils; prosper them in their course; and bring them

in safety to the haven where they would be, with a grateful

sense of thy mercies; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

About St Peter's Cycle of Prayer

Each Christian has his or her own particular

way of feeling close to God in prayer. This leaflet is not

intended in any way to give 'guidance' about praying,

but many people have found it helpful to know that they

are united with other people in their intercessions. It is

hoped that the suggestions made here will go some way

to help in this, and to give a sense of 'praying with one

mind'.

We hope the leaflet will provide one resource for

the weekly intercessions in Church. Throughout the year

we pray for our Diocese, Deanery and Parish in some

detail.
