THE MERMAID IS IN HER NEW HOME!

Did you notice something new when you drove around the circle at Co-lonial and Delaware Avenues? On Saturday, March 11th, our beautiful mermaid Lady Anne was installed atop a tall, sturdy pole. She can be seen from all directions, and looks great. The plan as the weather gets warmer is to plant some shrubbery around the base. A very special thank you to John Robertson who spearheaded the installation efforts. He was assisted by Andy Cioccia, Pete, Nick and David Stoll, Dave Wolfe, and Randy Cooke. Thank you all so very much!

VOLUNTEER NEEDED

Sadly, Linda Daniels has had to relinquish her responsibilities as chair of

the Welcome Committee, so the Civic League is in need of a new

Welcome Committee chairperson. The Welcome Committee’s function is

to provide new neighbors with information about the neighborhood, the

community, the city and the Civic League. This generally involves

dropping off a bag full of flyers and information at the home of new

families when they move into Colonial Place or Riverview. It is a great

way to meet new neighbors. If you are interested, please contact Tobie

Serafim at [email protected] .

RECYCLING CURBSIDE SERVICE!

You can now recycle these types of beverage containers in your blue cart.

These are described as gable top and shelf stable.

You may leave caps on but throw straws out.

No need to flatten them- it's best if they retain their shape to be properly sorted

by machinery.

YOUR CPRV NEWSLETTER TEAM

If you are reading this article in the CPRV Newsletter in the comfort of your home, then you should

know that a dedicated team of volunteers make that possible. It begins with our Editor, Lynn

Sanders-Carter, who gathers and compiles the articles, images, and advertisements. It is then

reviewed and approved by the Media Chairperson and the President and delivered to Fleet Printing.

The 1600 copies are then picked up at the printers and delivered to our Distribution Committee-of-

One, Mary Hormel, who sorts and labels them into packages for 50 delivery routes in CPRV, then

bundles those packages into four groups. RV resident, Jack Kennedy, delivers these four bundles to

Area Captains, who further deliver the individual packages to the 50 deliverers (block Captains). It is

these Block Captains who deliver the newsletter to your door.

This same process takes place month after month and year after year. I have been a part of that

process for over 42 years. All of us take this responsibility very seriously. We hope that you will remember and appreciate the significant voluntary effort that goes into the production and distribution of your CPRV Newsletter.

Drug "Take Back" Day

Have you been wondering how to get rid of all the leftover medications and prescription drugs that have been taking space in the medicine cabinet? Well here is a great opportunity to solve that problem. The Drug "Take Back" program is sponsored by the DEA and the Norfolk Police Department. The National Pre-scription Drug "Take Back" say aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

“CPRV is located in the Third Police Division. The Division Office is at located at 901 Asbury Avenue, Norfolk, VA 23513, behind the Wal-Mart on Tidewater rive.”

The event will be held at all three patrol divisions from 10 am - 2 pm on April 29.

Knitting Mill Creek Community Garden OPEN!

Do you want to UNLOCK your gardening potential? Knitting Mill Creek Community Garden will feature a Keyhole garden display this spring. Come out to see the garden and learn how you can grow fresh food all year long with very little maintenance or hard work. A date and time for the Keyhole presentation will be announced in a future newsletter. Our goal for the garden this season is to create a beautiful space that will be a food source for people, birds, butterflies, and bees. Hopefully the garden will also be a place to admire plants and relax in a beautiful natural setting. We are so fortunate to have this garden space within our neighborhood. If you don't have time to till the soil or you don't like getting your hands dirty, we can also teach you how to grow plants in straw bales or raised beds with the “lasagna” method of building plantable soil. Garden plots are available at $35.00 for a one year lease. With the mild weather that we have in our area you can garden all year long and not just in the summer. Our garden is open for people to see what is growing, but we ask visitors to please not pick any of the fruits, flowers, or vegetables that are growing in the plots. Our gardeners spend time and money to grow these plants and it can be very frustrating to see that your first tomato was taken or your lettuce is gone before you even get to try it. Gardening has so many benefits: 1. Good exercise 2. Relaxing 3. Healthy food 4. Family time – involve the kids 5. Educational for adults and children (lots of science in gardening)

Remember that for our area the danger of last frost is April 15th. We have about 5 more weeks

before it would be safe to plant flowers for the summer.

I hope that some of you will consider giving gardening a try this year. Please give me a call if you

have any questions or if you would like to rent a garden plot. Remember you can also grow flowers

if you aren't interested in growing food.

COLONIAL Place / Riverview Civic League General Meeting Minutes

March 13, 2017: Eggleston Center

President Serafim opened the meeting at 6:37pm.

NPD Neighborhood Resource Officer White and his supervisor, Lieutenant Gibbs, presented the monthly report con-cerning crime activity within the two neighborhoods and around Norfolk. Larcenies from autos are down signifi-cantly in our neighborhoods, as is crime across Norfolk. Officer White asked us again to please call any suspicious activity in to the Non-Emergency # at 441-5610. There was a discussion of theft of packages, with Officer White noting that a number of local businesses will accept packages on residents’ behalf, including Eggleston Services. A number of questions were answered and a good discussion ensued.

Jerrauld “Jay” Jones, local attorney, is running for the 89th District House of Delegates seat vacated by Mayor Ken-neth Alexander and was present. After a thorough introduction by Colonial Place resident and fellow attorney Bill Nusbaum, Mr. Jones spoke on his views and aspirations for filling the seat. Mayor Kenneth Alexander was also in attendance, and spoke at some length on various concerns; the Mayor also answered a number of questions by attendees.

Chuck Rigney, Norfolk Director of Economic Development Department and the Executive Director of the Economic Development Authority, and James Rogers, Director of the Department of Neighborhood Development and who oversees, among other duties, the Norfolk Cares hotline, were also in attendance and answered questions from attendees on various topics. Mr. Rigney and the Mayor commented, when asked about the status of the former JEB Stuart school property, that the previous developers had not been able to come to terms with the City and that the property was back in limbo for the moment.

City Councilperson Andria McClellan was our featured speaker, and spoke at length on various neighborhood issues and answered numerous questions.

Treasurer’s Report: An ending balance of $15,573.33 was reported. Details were discussed and questions were answered concerning the budget.

Membership Committee – we currently have 70 - 80 members. The Chair reminded members that all memberships were due for renewal as of December 31, 2016 and could be renewed in person at a meeting or through the mail.

Environmental Committee – the neighborhood cleanup has been rescheduled to Saturday April 15th and Sunday April 16th. Please call or email Audrey Webb for more info or to report amounts collected. Norfolk Recycling Day is May 6th and all types of materials, including hazardous materials, will be accepted between 9am – 2pm at Waste Management on Pineridge Road.

Community Improvement – the CPRV mermaid, “Lady Anne”, has been placed on her permanent mounting in the traffic circle at Colonial Avenue and Delaware Avenue. Also, the Knitting Mill Creek Community Garden is now open and plots are available for rent.

Crime Prevention – the Chairperson, Dave Wolfe, reminds everyone to please call in all suspicious incidents, no matter how minor they may seem.

Buck Cummings reminded everyone to make a point of reporting street lights that aren’t working. They can be called in to Dominion Power directly or to Norfolk Cares. He would like to institute a similar program concerning potholes around the neighborhood. He also reminded everyone that it was both legal and beneficial to cut the suckers on any crepe myrtle trees in front of their property. The members expressed their appreciation for his efforts.

The President adjourned the meeting at 8:18 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

John W. Robertson
