The COA and the Artful Aging Participants welcome the community to join us for an afternoon of sharing of thoughts expressed in their Artfully Aging Journals, conversation

and social gathering. Light refreshments served. The Artful Aging Art Class Participants will treat the community to a special showing of their works of art. This show is the culmination of their experiences in a 6-week series of classes led by local artist, Gail Tilton; designed to create expressive works of art utilizing various methods with an “Artful Aging Wellness Toolbox”. Gail will give a short presentation on the use of Art for healing, and the participants will informally share their own experiences. This Artful Aging Art Class was held at the COA, and was sponsored by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Chatham Cultural Council and the Friends of Chatham Council on Aging. Join us for lunch beforehand, see page 3 for menu and details.

The Edward Gorey House celebrates and preserves the life and works of Edward Gorey, an American author, illustrator, playwright, set and costume designer. The House displays his diverse and extraordinary talents and reflects his distinct personality. After his death in 2000 the

house became a museum, dedicated to Gorey’s life and work and his devotion to animal welfare (www.edwardgoreyhouse.org).

The Optimist Café, located in Yarmouth was originally the Captain Howes House, built in 1849 by Captain Frederick Howes (1812 – 1882). It is a beautiful old home that is a fine example of Gothic Revival Architecture. The Optimist Café, serves fresh breakfast and lunch fare in their unique and comfortable atmosphere (www.optimistcafe.com).

Both the reduced admission fee to the Edward Gorey Museum of $4.00 and the Lunch are at the Cost of the Participant. Transportation is Free. Space is limited. Reservations required.

Call the COA 508-945-5190

John Dillingham, one of the founding fathers of the town of Sandwich, built the first house in 1650 but in 1740 his descendants moved the house down the street to 71 Main Street and built a much grander house in it’s place. During these 250 plus years, the Dunbar House has been in the ownership of only five families. In the 1920s Colonel Henry Dunbar bought the house so he could be close to his supervision of the widening of the Cape Cod Canal. During these years Mrs. Dunbar established the tradition of hosting teas. The Town of Sandwich bought the property in 1974, and the house was returned to private ownership when it was bought by the Bells in the early 1990’s. In 2000, Jim and Paula Hegarty of Milton moved into the Dunbar House and embarked on a project to restore the home to it’s colonial grandeur. In the process they have maintained the traditions of Mrs. Dunbar by providing a comforting atmosphere in the Adjacent Tea Room. The Dunbar features innovative menus, homemade desserts and quality teas (www.dunbarrestaurant.com).

Lunch is at the Cost of the Diner. Transportation is Free. Space is limited. Reservations required. Call the COA 508-945-5190

Nearly One in Every Six Seniors in America Faces the Threat of Hunger!

The Family Pantry of Cape Cod launched their Healthy Meals in Motion Mobile

Food Pantry in September 2016 to help combat the hunger problem identified in the

towns of Chatham, Brewster, Eastham and Provincetown. These four towns, according

to a study done by Feeding America, did not have the resources to provide three meals

a day for people struggling with food insecurity due to lack of transportation, mobility, or

health concerns.

The Family Pantry reached out to the Councils on Aging in each of the towns

offering to partner to bring the mobile pantry to the COAs on one Wednesday a

month, providing a wide assortment of perishable and nonperishable foods for the

senior community. The Chatham COA’s leadership team of Mandi Speakman and Eva

Orman, volunteered to pilot the program and worked with the Family Pantry of Cape

Cod for weeks to define the logistics of the launch.

On the third Wednesday of every month the Healthy Meals in Motion Mobile Pantry

arrives at the Chatham COA to distribute healthy foods to 30 senior families and has

recently expanded to include families from the Monomoy Service Center. Seniors who

are interested in participating in the program should contact the COA outreach office to

register. Registration is easy and fast; a participant will need to provide a photo id,

proof of residency and a verbal commitment of income. The participant will fill out a

grocery list including fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, seafood, nonperishable goods and

dairy that will be delivered to the Chatham COA between noon and 2:00pm on the third

Wednesday of the following month. The mobile pantry is on going, and all are wel-

come. This is a great program to help Chatham

seniors stretch a limited budget and obtain healthy,

tailored foods they like and enjoy.

SHINE NEWS…….

Are You or Someone You Know Turning 65 or Thinking About Retiring?

SHINE can help! Every day there are 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 and are now eligible for Medicare. Those new to Medicare can make costly mistakes resulting in higher health care costs, gaps in coverage and possibly a lifetime late enrollment penalty. If you are collecting Social Security, you will automatically receive your Medicare card 2-3 months before turning 65. If you are not collecting, you are responsible for signing up for Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) either online at www.socialsecurity.gov or at your local Social Security office. There are federal rules as to when you can enroll into Medicare Part A, Part B, Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans-HMOs, PPOs) and D (prescription coverage). If you miss these enrollment periods you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty and could have a gap in health care coverage.

If you are covered by a group health plan through the company you or spouse is still actively working (not Cobra) you may delay taking Medicare Part B at 65 without a penalty. However, if the employer has less than 20 employees then Medicare is primary and the employer coverage is secondary. In this case you may need to have Medicare Parts A and B for complete coverage. This is only one example- each situation is unique and more questions need to be asked, options to look over and costs to compare. That is why it is very important to sit down with a SHINE (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) counselor and go over your particular situation. SHINE volunteer counselors are trained and certified by the Executive Office of Elder Affairs and are re-certified each year to help those on, or eligible for Medicare, navigate the complex health insurance system. If you or someone you know will be turning 65 soon, please call the senior center to make an appointment with a SHINE counselor. Call the COA at 508-945-5190

Balance Exercises (Mayo Clinic, 2018) Falls put you at risk of serious injury. Balance exercises can help you maintain stability at any age and can help with preventing falls. Nearly any activity that keeps you on your feet and moving can help you maintain good balance. But specific exercises designed to enhance your balance are beneficial to include in your daily routine and can help you improve your stability.

If you have severe balance problems or an orthopedic condition, get your doctor’s approval before doing these exercises:

Weight Shifts • Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your weight equally distributed on both legs. • Shift your weight to your right side, and then lift your left foot off the floor. • Hold the position as long as you can maintain good form, up to 30 seconds. • Return to the starting position and repeat on the other side. As your balance improves, increase the number of repetitions.

Single-leg Balance • Stand with feet hip-width apart and your weight equally distributed on both legs. Place your hands on your hips. Lift your left leg off the floor and bend it back at the knee. • Hold the position as long as you can maintain good form, up to 30 seconds. • Return to the starting position and repeat on the other side. As your balance improves, increase the number of repetitions.

More information can be found by searching the internet for “Mayo Clinic Fall Prevention”. Other exercise classes and routines can be beneficial for fall prevention as well. Call the COA at 508-945-5190 to check for availability in our Yoga and Fit, Fun & Fall Free classes!

From the Director’s Desk… Because you’ve been asking for it, and update on Scams and Fraud

There has been an alarming increase in the number of financial abuses against elders in MA and throughout the country. It is said that financially exploiting elders is one of the largest areas of crime of the decade and, unfortunately, it is only continuing to increase. Financial scams targeting seniors have become so prevalent that they’re now considered “the crime of the 21st century.” Why? Because seniors are thought to have a significant amount of money sitting in their accounts. It’s not just wealthy seniors who are targeted. Low-income older adults are also at risk of financial abuse. If you are a victim or suspect someone may be a victim of fraud, don’t be critical of yourself or of someone you know of who is a victim. Seek assistance by visiting the Scam & Fraud tab at www.chathamcoa.com or call COA Outreach at 508-945-5190. The best strategy? Avoid becoming a victim in the first place!

Tips to Prevent Elder Abuse Connect with the programs at the COA! Avoid isolation, stay active, and socialize. Monitor your financial transactions closely and confide in people you trust. Keep important legal and financial documents in a safe place. Be aware of telemarketers who pressure you into making an immediate decision. Safeguard your personal information and passwords. Be careful when responding to any solicitation, if it sounds too good to be true it most likely is. Screen your calls and only answer when you recognize the name/number. Check with a trusted source before sending money or giving out any personal information. Avoid getting on a mailing list and don’t fill out contest entry forms.
