American Reading Company Award

The Little Egg Harbor School District adopted the American Reading

Company program for the 2010-2011 school year and implemented

the program for kindergarten and sixth grade students in 2012. One

component of the program is the 100 Book Challenge where the

students are challenged to read 30 minutes of structured,

independent reading daily in school as well as 30 minutes of

independent reading at home. The 100 Book Challenge does not just

teach students how to read, it also teaches them to be readers.

Students log their steps and teachers record them each day. Three

sixth grade students with the highest number of steps are being

acknowledged for their efforts in making reading an everyday habit.
