SALES UPDATE

WILL MIDDLE MARKET EMERGE AT OBS MARCH SALE?By Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

As owners, agents, and trainers began their inspections in earnest for horses entered

in the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s 2-year-olds in training sale, there was a positive vibe on the sale grounds the morning of March 12.

With partly sunny skies and a temperate 80 degrees, there was a bevy of activity as the showing, scoping, and analysis began following three days of under tack show workouts for the March 14-15 sale in Ocala, Fla.

"There was plenty of money in Miami (at the Fasig-Tipton sale) and many buyers left with money to spend," said Ciaran Dunne of Wavertree Stables. "So if you add a few more buyers to that, this sale should be OK."

"As I say before every sale, we are cautiously optimistic," said OBS sales director Tod Wojciechowski. "We don't want to seem overconfident, but we've been happy with the pre-sale interest we have seen."

The optimistic view of sales company officials and consignors stem from a combination of factors, including the thriving U.S. economy, positive results of the recent Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale where 74 horses grossed $25.1 million and the average rose 3.8% to $339,392, and the on-track results of auction graduates.

The March sale, previously a select venue before being expanded three years ago into an open and larger catalog, provides a broader picture of the depth of the bloodstock market than that offered by the Gulfstream sale, which got the juvenile sales season off to a great start.

The March sale has produced six champions,

24 millionaires, and six winners of seven Breeders' Cup races. Since the beginning of 2016, OBS March graduates have won or placed in 231 stakes races, including 81 graded events.

Included in those successes are seven grade 1 winners in 2016, all of whom are pictured on the catalog cover, and four horses from last year's March sale, which are on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

This year's catalog of 674 entries—a 10% increase over the 611 entered last year—was reduced by 144 withdrawals as of the end of business March 11.

sale resulted in 320 horses grossing $51,288,000, a decline of 7% from the 2015 auction. Last year's average of $160,275 represented a 6% decline, and the median fell 2% to $102,500.

Wojciechowski said OBS expanded the March sale in an effort to offer another buying or selling opportunity for horses being pointed toward the OBS April sale, and buyers and consignors gain an added level of comfort each year by having a more diverse group of horses to select from.

"A lot of times, with a smaller catalog people stay away because there just is not the selection," the OBS executive said. "We expanded the March sale because we believed buyers wanted selection and an opportunity to look at a lot of horses. That helps buyers and sellers.

"It is a great mix of the very top end, as far as physicals and pedigrees and that next level of horse that doesn't have quite the pedigree of some others, but is a good athlete."

While there is little doubt the continued demand at the top that has led buyers to pay premium prices for the lots perceived to have the greatest racing potential won't continue, Wojciechowski and others hope that the broader array of horses on offer will provide a boost to the middle market that has shown weakness during the last year.

"I believe we will see good demand at the high end and we're hoping to see some of that middle market return here," Wojciechowski said.

"The middle-market horses, some with off-the-wall pedigrees, sold very well at Fasig-Tipton," Dunne noted. "You would look at them on paper (catalog page) and say, 'What are they doing in this sale?' and then they sold the hair off them."

Consignor Niall Brennan said the importance of the middle market to the overall breeding and sales industry cannot be understated.

"The Fasig-Tipton sale didn't surprise anybody," Brennan said. "It was very strong at the top, as people continued to be very selective. But when (the) March (sale) opens up, you really hope for a middle market, with more horses moving in the $50,000-150,000 price range.

"We need to see more of a middle market for this business to survive, because so many people rely upon this. We don't need to see continued polarization at the March and April sales."

Brennan said the middle market could be helped by more buyers setting their sights lower than the very top, especially since those horses have a limited buying bench.

"You have to be looking at the ones you think you have a chance to buy," Brennan said of buyers unlikely to be able to afford the very top offerings. "If they just look at the ones out of their price range, they are going to end up buying nothing."

With sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. ET daily, Hips 1-338 will be offered Tuesday and Hips 339-677 will go through the ring Wednesday. The sale will be streamed live via the OBS website and BloodHorse.com.

The catalog is available online via the OBS website, with a sortable master index that includes searchable pedigree and consignor information, as well as access to pedigree updates occurring since the catalog was printed.

The iPad version of the catalog can be accessed via the equineline Sales Catalog App. The app allows users to download and view the catalog, receive updates and results, record notes, and also provides innovative search, sorting, and rating capability. ARROGATE POSTS LAST WORK BEFORE SHIPPING TO DUBAIBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

Juddmonte Farms' Arrogate worked seven furlongs in 1:25 March 12 at Santa Anita

Park in his final move before shipping to Dubai March 13 for the $10 million Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1).

The 4-year-old Unbridled's Song colt gave trainer Bob Baffert the indication that he is ready to take on the March 25 overseas test. With Martin Garcia aboard, Arrogate worked in company with Cat Burglar, and snapped through fractions of :24 3/5, :36 4/5, :48 3/5, and 1:12 4/5 before finishing up in 1:25.

"He had a hard breeze last week," Baffert said of Arrogate's March 5 work going the same distance in 1:24. "The track was sort of dull (Sunday), but he looked fantastic. He went around like he usually does, never taking a deep breath. He's got to be 100% for me to

take him, and he leaves tomorrow."Once at Meydan, Baffert said the champion 3-year-

old of 2016 may gallop but won't post another hard work.

"He won't do much once he's there—gallop a little bit, maybe breeze—but he's pretty ready," Baffert said.

Felipe Stakes (G2) March 11, is stable and will have surgery to repair his condylar fracture in his left front leg Monday.

"He's looks really stable. They're going to do the surgery tomorrow morning," Baffert said. "Very disappointing, but right now the focus is just to get the surgery and get him healed up."

The undefeated son of Candy Ride won his third consecutive graded stakes Saturday and was a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) before being sidelined indefinitely. BH

"We'll give him a little break in the action (after Dubai)," the trainer said of the plans for the remainder of Arrogate's 4-year-old campaign. "The ultimate goal is still the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), so maybe something before, but that's too far out to think about."

Bred by Clearsky Farms in Kentucky, Juddmonte purchased the son of Unbridled's Song—Bubbler, by Distorted Humor, for $560,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale.

With his current earnings of more than $11 million, boosted by his score in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1), a win in Dubai would make Arrogate the all-time leading North American-based earner with more than $17 million, surpassing California Chrome's $14,752,650.

In the continuing highs and lows of the game, Baffert also said that Cheyenne Stables' Mastery, who was injured after a 6 3/4-length win in the San

CLASSIC EMPIRE BACK TO WORKBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

John Oxley's reigning juvenile champion Classic Empire made a crucial return to the

workout tab March 12, turning in a half-mile drill at Palm Meadows Training Center that marked the colt's first serious outing since run-ning third in the Feb. 4 Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes (G2) and being beset by setbacks in the aftermath.

Working in company, the bay son of Pioneerof the Nile clocked four furlongs in :48.95—third fastest of 27 drills at the distance— and galloped out five furlongs in 1:01 3/5 on the watch of assistant trainer Norman Casse.

"Just very happy with the way that he worked," Casse said. "It was very important that he work today obviously. Basically without sounding really cliche, we got exactly what we wanted and needed so that we can move forward now."

Simply seeing the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner record a workout was a relief in itself to his connections given the string of bad luck that hit in the days after his disappointing seasonal bow.

"The goal is the Blue Grass. We think that's the best place for him to run as he's obviously been there and we know that he likes the track," Casse said. "But we've said all along, once we started having these little hiccups that we have to explore every option."

Trained by Mark Casse, Classic Empire captured the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland last October prior to his Breeders' Cup triumph. He has won four of six starts with $1,520,220 in earnings and his only other defeat prior to the Holy Bull came when he wheeled out of the gate of the Hopeful Stakes (G1) last September and lost his rider.

"Today was very important and the weeks forward will be very important," Norman Casse said. "We're in crunch time now. I think everybody recognizes that. He just has to continue to be happy and keep doing well. We still have plenty of time to get him ready but, it's go-time now." BH s Share this story

discovered to have a foot abscess in his right front. The foot has since healed without issue but a planned workout for the colt had to be aborted last week when he refused to break off under jockey Julien Leparoux and showed signs of back soreness upon returning to the barn.

An equine therapist was brought in to work on Classic Empire and, by last Sunday, he was showing no signs of physical strife. With a timed move now officially under his belt, Casse said the April 8 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland remains a goal, though a race like the April 15 Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park one week later could be an option if it's determined he needs more time.

SALES UPDATE

FROMMER AND BERKELHAMMER PARTNER UP FOR SUCCESSBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

On the surface, Cary Frommer and Barry Berkel-hammer seem unlikely business partners.

She is a short, reserved, white-haired grandmother from South Carolina. He is a tall, stout horseman who operates Abracadabra Farm in Ocala, Fla.

But over the course of more than a dozen years, the two have built a pinhooking business that today is at the height of the marketplace, with two seven-figure transactions in each of the last two years.

After Frommer sold two Uncle Mo juveniles for $1.3 million and $1 million in 2016, the pair came right back this year at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale March 2, topping the sale with an Uncle Mo filly for $1.5 million and a More Than Ready colt at $1.1 million. Both of the Fasig-Tipton 2-year-olds were also partially owned by David Robbins, one of Berkelhammer's clients, and both were purchased by Lawrrence Best's OXO Equine.

Sitting at a patio table outside Barn 10 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s complex in Ocala, Fla., where she was preparing to offer another group at the March 14-15 OBS sale, the affable but driven Frommer explained that her recent success has exceeded all expectations.

"I have absolutely surpassed every goal I set out to achieve," Frommer, 60, said while waiting for the last horses in her consignment to complete their under tack show workouts. "It is unimaginable to me."

A self-described Army brat whose father's military service resulted in a nomadic childhood, Frommer's first experience with horses was through the show ring. But that was short-lived and she ended up as a racetracker, honing her horsemanship skills.

"I couldn't make a living at it so I just started galloping horses, which paid real money," Frommer said of her vocation that involved traveling to racing circuits all over the country. "I worked for Hall of Fame trainers and I worked for trainers at Charles Town. I learned something from everybody I worked for. You can learn as much working at the cheaper tracks about keeping a horse sound as can from a

Hall of Fame trainer."After her son was born, Frommer

and her ex-husband decided the nomadic racetrack lifestyle would have to go and they settled in his hometown of Aiken, South Carolina.

Once her son became old enough to attend school, Frommer made the move into buying and selling young horses, which would require only short absences from home of several weeks at a time.

"I am very goal-oriented and I couldn't train horses just to train horses," she recalls. "When the

racing goal left because I couldn't go to the races, pinhooking became the new goal."

Frommer said part of her interest in pinhooking was driven by the poor condition of some 2-year-olds she and her husband were sent from other trainers. "I didn't think it had to be that way. I really strive not to squeeze the lemon dry at a sale. This is not supposed to be the best day of their lives. It is supposed to be a steppingstone on to bigger things."

The turning point for Frommer was meeting Berkelhammer some 13-14 years ago when the two found themselves stabled alongside each other at a sale at Calder Race Course. One of Frommer's horses had an accident on the track, and Berkelhammer offered to assist her by using his pony to take her horse to the track throughout the sale.

"I had seen him around but wasn't sure if I liked him. He was this big, loud guy," Frommer said with a chuckle, which she does a lot in a conversation. "But it was absolutely the nicest thing and I never forgot it. He is very good-hearted, which is something a lot of people don't know about Barry."

Frommer said that after her horses sold well at that auction and Berkelhammer's did not fare so well, he approached her about joining forces.

Frommer said she and Berkelhammer share the same philosophy in their purchases, seeking out yearlings that are correctly conformed, with a good brain. "That is very important to us."

While their acquisitions must have sire strength, they are forgiving on the pedigree as long as a mare that may not have any top runners is still young

enough to have potential upside and has a strong female family.

Berkelhammer agreed he and Frommer are on the same page most of the time, but he has to rein in his partner when shopping yearling auctions.

"We just kind of complement each other," the horseman said. "I find Cary to be conservative by nature in her treatment of horses, which I respect. I find that when I have horses with her they are well-cared for and not put into an abusive program. That is how I do things…we have the same philosophy toward how to treat horses, stopping on them when they need to be stopped on.

"She likes to get to horse sales and start buying and I have to rein her in a little bit. She enjoys buying them, like a woman buying purses."

Berkelhammer said the pair's high-priced sales were unanticipated but that it was largely due to their awareness of the market swing toward quality.

"You could never anticipate being rewarded to the extent we have, but we did recognize that the market was becoming more selective and more polarized, and it appears the real the strength of the market appears to be what they perceive to be the best racing prospect, not just the price, but racing prospect. We tried to go out and buy horses those buyers want. As a result we have paid more to get those horses."

With a 1 1/2-year-old granddaughter ("She is the light of my life.") and her sale's success last year, Frommer said she considered taking a step back and perhaps not being as hands-on with her operation, which now numbers about 80 horses for herself and clients. But with two seven-figure sales already this year, that may have to wait awhile. BH

GOODYEARFORROSES COMPLETES STAKES TRIO IN SANTA ANABy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Abbondanza Racing's Goodyearforroses continued her roll in Southern California and earned her first

graded stakes win March 12 in the $200,000 Santa Ana (G2T) at Santa Anita Park.

Her 1 3/4-length victory in the Santa Ana was her third straight stakes win since relocating to California and moving into the care of trainer Richard Baltas. The Azamour mare first took the off-the-turf Robert J. Frankel Stakes Dec. 31 by 5 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita—when she was still a filly—then came back Feb. 2 to score a 1 1/4-length win in the 1 1/2-mile Astra II Stakes on the Santa Anita lawn.

The even-money favorite in the field of eight for the 1 1/8-mile Santa Ana, Goodyearforroses stalked the early pace of Baltas stablemate Kenriya, made an easy three-wide move in the final turn, and was never seriously challenged in the stretch.

Pretty Girl, who also finished second behind Goodyearforroses in the Frankel, rallied from eighth to get within 1 3/4 lengths of the winner at the wire, but was never a threat to win.

Kenriya ran fractions of :23.85, :48.90, and 1:12.80 through six furlongs before tiring to finish last. Goodyearforroses held a two-length advantage through a mile in 1:36.58 and hit the wire in 1:47.98 under jockey Corey Nakatani.

"Her winning so easily is just a tribute to Richard's team," Nakatani said. "Richard has been so patient with her and has let her tell us when she's ready to go.... She's doing unbelievable, as you can tell from the way she ran today."

Bred in Ireland by The Hornets, out of the Galileo mare Guilia, Goodyearforroses now has seven wins from 15 starts and $365,995 in earnings. In her three starts on the West Coast, she's earned $226,800. She was purchased by David Meah for $200,000 out of the Denali Stud consignment to the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall sale.

"She's been aggressive from the time we got her and it's nice to have a jock like Corey, who I don't have to give any instructions to," said Baltas, who also indicated the mare will try the May 27 Gamely Stakes (G1T) at Santa Anita next. "She's done everything right and she's acted like a good horse. We've got some weight on her now and she's all racehorse."

Sweet Charity came in third, followed by Sheeza Milky Way, Evo Campo, Do the Dance, Responsibleforlove, and Kenriya to complete the order of finish. BH

SUNNY RIDGE DIGS IN TO WIN STYMIEBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

Dennis Drazin's home-bred Sunny Ridge

scored a close victory after going wide into the stretch of the $125,000 Stymie Stakes March 12 at Aque-duct Racetrack.

Under jockey Manuel Franco, the 4-year-old son of Holy Bull went five wide exiting the second turn and rallied down the middle of the stretch to pull off the three-quarter-length win in the 1 1/8-mile test on the inner track rated fast.

"I got a good trip. The assistant (trainer) told me to try to cover him after the break and wait for the right time to make a move," Franco said. "It worked out well. He loves this track. He handles it well and runs hard every time."

Diversify, who was the 5-2 second choice, broke from the outside and immediately made his way to the front of the nine-horse field. Dolphus and Admiral Blue chased in second and third, while Sunny Ridge raced comfortably in fifth and 2-1 favorite Send It In raced near the back. Diversify set fractions of :22.98, 47.01, and 1:11.37 through six furlongs.

Around the far turn, Dolphus began to pressure Diversify as Sunny Ridge went wide to move around Admiral Blue and Royal Posse. Doyouknowsomething, the 35-1 longshot in the field, passed his foes in a drive for the wire but was outrun by Sunny Ridge. The Jason Servis trainee stopped the clock in 1:50.19.

With a late run, Send It In finished another three-quarters of a length back in third, a head in front of Dolphus in fourth. Admiral Blue rounded out the top five.

Sunny Ridge returned $10.40, $6.70, and $4.30 across the board. Doyouknowsomething paid $20.60 and $7.80, and Send It In was worth $2.90.

The New Jersey-bred entered the Stymie off a 4 3/4-length score in the Jazil Stakes Jan. 14 at Aqueduct at a distance of one mile, 70 yards on the inner track. During his 3-year-old season last year, he won the Withers Stakes (G3) and ran third in the betfair.com Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1). As a juvenile, he won the Sapling Stakes and ran second in both the Champagne Stakes (G1) and the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (G3). He now boasts a record of 5-2-2 from 15 starts, with earnings of $833,002. BH

WEST COAST, GLACIER BREAK MAIDENS FOR BAFFERTBy Mary Reedert @BH_MReeder

Bob Baffert always seems to have another potential star waiting in the

wings and March 12 two late-developing 3-year-olds showed off their potential, breaking their maidens with ease.

Going off at odds of 1-9 in a three-horse field, West Coast won his second start by 3 1/4 lengths for owners Gary and Mary West in Santa Anita Park's third race, a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight for 3-year-olds.

The Flatter colt, out of the 2000 champion juvenile filly Caressing, was bred by CFP Thoroughbreds and was a $425,000 purchase by Ben Glass out of the Hermitage consignment to the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Originally a field of seven, the race dwindled to three after second-choice Honor and Courage was a late scratch. Fallstar, a well bred son of Speightstown out of Hollywood Oaks (G2)-winning mare Potesta, set moderate fractions until the turn for home where West Coast eased alongside to put a head in front.

West Coast continued to inch away under a hand ride by Martin Garcia and completed the race in 1:44.14. Fallstar finished 10 3/4 lengths in front of Vow's Son.

In Santa Anita's next race, Breeze Easy's $1.2 million purchase, Glacier, broke through to win a two-turn one mile maiden special weight on the turf after making four starts on the dirt.

After a shuffle for the lead Ghost Warrior set the pace for the first quarter before Fortune of War took over, while Glacier was tucked away near the back of the 11-horse field. Rounding the final turn Glacier made a five-wide move and with unbroken momentum was

able to get by the leaders with ease to win by 2 1/4 lengths.

Marq One rallied for second and Fortune of War held for third.

One race prior Feb. 18, Glacier finished third behind West Coast, who finished behind Bronze Age in his debut.

Glacier was bred in Florida by Hal Snowden Jr. and is out of the multiple stakes-winning Silver Deputy mare Haddie Be Good. The Broken Vow ridgling was the sale topper of the 2016 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s April sale of 2-year-olds in training when purchased for $1.2 million by his current owner from the Tom McCrocklin consignment. OAKLAWN PARK INCREASES PURSESBy BloodHorse Staff

Oaklawn Park is increasing purses beginning March 18, the track announced March 12.

Purses for maiden special weight races will increase from $72,000 to $80,000 and allowance races will go to as much as $84,000 after starting the season for as much as $76,000.

The March 18 card was already the second richest of the meet, with the $900,000 Rebel Stakes (G2), $350,000 Azeri Stakes (G2), and the $250,000 Essex Handicap included in the 11-race card. With the purse increase, the total purses for the day could exceed $2 million.

"The Rebel Stakes is no longer just a stepping stone to the Arkansas Derby," said Oaklawn assistant general manager Wayne Smith. "It stands on its own merit as one of the leading preps for the Triple Crown races."

Also all starter allowance races, claiming races with a claiming price of $30,000 or more, and maiden claiming races with a claiming price of $30,000 or more will all have a $2,000 per-race bump.

"For 113 years Oaklawn's motto has been 'racing comes first,'" Smith said. "Our gaming operation exists to create a vibrant racing product. This year we have benefited from strong business in racing and gaming, which is allowing us to increase purses during the season for the ninth consecutive year. That's an exceptional run."

ANALYSISCONFORMATION FLAWS NO BARRIER TO 2YO SUCCESSBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

The approach of finding suc-cessful racing prospects at

auction by looking past some conformation flaws was reinforced in a study published in February by the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science that found mild to moderate deviations in forelimb conformation had no substantive affect on lifetime racing performance.

The study, co-authored by Elizabeth Santschi, Brad White, Eric Peterson, Michael Gotchey, Joseph Morgan, and Scott Leibsle, examined 292 2-year-olds offered through the 2002 Ocala Breeders' Sale Co.'s April sale.

Each horse received carpal and fetlock conformation scores from two teams of two experienced observers who then agreed on one of three ratings of mild, moderate, or severe for eight carpal conformation conditions. For fetlock assessments, the severity of deviation applied to whether the fetlock turned in or out.

Of the 584 forelimbs assessed, 23.3% were determined to have no conformation deviation while 27.9% had outward rotations, 48.7% were offset, and 22.6% were valgus, meaning the leg below the knees deviated outward. Severe deviations were seen in 15 offset limbs (5%) and one valgus limb (0.01%). As for fetlocks, 53.4% were straight, 33.9% turned out, and 12.7% turned in. Fifteen percent of the horses had both straight carpus and fetlocks.

Conformation could only be associated specifically with only two racing outcomes in this study. Horses with a limb(s) both valgus and offset or that were valgus, had outward rotation and were offset (identified as VOO) averaged five starts at 2 compared with all other carpal deviations that made two to three starts. Also horses with fetlocks turned inward were more likely to win a race (88%) compared to horses with fetlocks turned outward (68%). Horses with straight

fetlocks did not show statistical difference from those turned in or out.

Among horses in the study, nearly 93% went on to eventually start in a race and 76.7% would win at least one race. As 2-year-olds, 66% of the horses in the study would start and 31.5% would win at least one race. At both 2 and 3, the study horses would include 90.4% starters and 68.8% would win one or more races.

The study also identified other variables associated with better racing outcomes, such as:

• Horses with lighter body weight (mean weight for study horses was an estimated 968 pounds) at 2 and 3 made more lifetime starts;

• Older subjects (the mean age was 26 months) had more wins and starts at 2, and greater starts at 2 and 3, and;

• Taller horses (mean of 15.55 hands) made more money per start. BH s Share this story
