What Sign Can You Do?
We are reading from John’s Gospel, chapter six; the Bread of Life Discourse. This is one of my favorite stories of the bible. I’m fond of this chapter because Jesus spells out to us what it means to be a follower of Him; that we must put our faith in Him. Jesus tells us that He is the true bread from Heaven! Jesus does not mince words, He tells us the truth about Him being sent by the Father to give us life.
But He faces a skeptical crowd, even though they were with Him when He multiplied the loaves and fishes to feed five thousand men. They have the nerve to ask Him; “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do?” We have to shake our heads in amazement at this question. They had just witnessed a great miracle and had their stomachs filled with the abundant meal Jesus had brought forth from five loaves and two fishes. What were these people missing?
Yet, we can also be a doubtful bunch. Questioning God’s love for us, asking; “what have you done for me lately?” Why is life so difficult at times? Acting like the Israelite community described in the first reading from Exodus, we too grumble against God. We forget that we have also been freed from slavery; in our case, freed from slavery to sin. We fail to see the big picture of life. That our short time here on earth is meant for us to gain entry to our true home of Heaven. We do this by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior.
Jesus feeds us with the Bread of Life at each Mass. This sacrament sustains us, empowers and nourishes us for our journey. Seek this gift as often as you are able! Don’t miss Mass for any reason other than serious illness. Stay in union with our Lord and give thanks. Encourage others who have abandoned the Lord to come back. Each of us needs Jesus in our lives; we are without hope if we do not have Jesus.
What can you do Jesus? We are asking the wrong question. What can’t Jesus do?
~ Deacon Ray
