Grow Tent by Julius, Chad, Kayla and Anna
In rooms 26 and 28 we are inspired to plant vegetables. We have a special tent to grow plants in our classroom. We learned how to start growing sweet potatoes from a lady called Tiffany. We planted the potatoes, peppers and eggplants to grow our own food. Our grow tent has a special light that acts like the sun. It also has a fan. We are growing the plants for our courtyard and the community gardens. When we transplant these plants we will grow tomatoes.
The Lorax Bulletin Board by Brooke, Megan and Franklin
This month we have been working on a Lorax themed bulletin board. We read the book called The Lorax. Dr. Seuss wrote the Lorax. We made trees and characters for the bulletin board. Here are three things you can do to make the world a better place. Upcycle, recycle and not pollute the environment. Do you know what upcycling means? Here we’ll tell you…reusing garbage and making it in to useful things.
Pancake Breakfast by Nathaniel, Delonna and Franz
The adults in rooms 26 and 28 surprised us with a pancake breakfast. Our classroom looked like a fancy restaurant. We found our seats at the tables because we had place cards. We had pancakes, fruit and milk. At our table we read each other some questions. We learned new things about each other. We had to use our manners too. The pancake breakfast was yummy!
Pink Day by Jayden G and Lukas
In room 28 we learned about Day of Pink. Day of Pink is about not bullying people. We made a classroom t-shirt about how to treat people and not be bullies. We use the 7 teachings because they are important. They help us take care of other people and animals. We wore pink on Day of Pink. Room 28 is proud of not being bullies!
Science-Experiments by Naod, Colin and Jakeb
In room 28 we started growing bean seeds without soil. We used plastic cups and rolled up paper towels and put them inside the cups. Next we added 3 bean seeds and added water to make the paper towel wet. We covered it with plastic to make it more comfortable for the seed to grow. We watched the seed coat open and then the main root (radicle) came out. Then little roots grew off the radicle. The hypocotyl (main stem) grew until we started to see leaves grow. We recorded our observations in our bean journals. Our botanist teacher (Ms. Sproat) showed us another experiment. We used different coloured waters and carnations, that showed us how roots absorb water. Next we saw that the flowers changed to pink and
blue. At last we realized that the roots and stems absorb water for the plant. We are excited to continue to learn about plants.
Class Book by Woini, Jake and Chris
Hi, we are Woini, Jake and Chris from room 28. Our class wrote a book called Look What Our Beautiful Hands Can Do. It is about helping the earth and people. First we read the book Beautiful Hands. This gave us the idea for our book. We all had an idea for what our hands can do. We painted pictures using hand prints. We presented our book at the Earth Day assembly.
Journals by R.J., Adyson and Jayden H.
As journalists, we report about the weather, wind, sun and moon. We also write about what we see outside, like air and water. When we started our journals the precipitation was snow and now it is rain. The weather changed from winter to spring. We do our journals after school and share them at school. It is fun. We share them everyday. In our journals we draw diagrams under our writing. These journals help us learn about nature. We are going to do a challenge in May. It is the 30 x 30 Nature Challenge. We are going to do our journals outside everyday so we are going to have a lot to say in our new journals.
Plant Pick Up!
Lord Roberts School Annual Plant Sale!
Plant pickup will take place at the school on Monday, May 30 (3:30 - 5 PM) & Tuesday, May 31 (8:30 AM - 5 PM).
Please arrange to have an adult pick up all plants.
Thank you for your support! The Sustainable Development Committee
Volunteer opportunities: If you are interested in volunteering, we will need help on
Monday, May 30 in the morning when the plants are delivered to the school.
Please contact Paulette Krovats or Amanda Manness if you are interested.
The select group of 18 students called "The
Pantastics" will have a very exciting
opportunity this Spring. This talented group
of steel drum players will be first on the
concert line up beginning at 9:30 am at the
Forks on Friday, May 20. Mark your
calendars!
Ms. Marla Tran, Music Consultant for the
Division will be working alongside Mrs. Enns to
help prepare the students for this special
event.
It’s great that the sun is warm, the snow is gone and the field is mostly dry. We are looking forward
to learning new games and playing old favourites outside during our fitness and physical education
classes for the next two months.
I would like to thank Miriam Van Dam, our teacher candidate from the University of Manitoba, for
her hard work over this last term. She has taught every class throughout the year but focused on
teaching Ttchoukball and badminton and jump rope to our intermediate students over the last month.
I look forward to beginning balance activities with the students to start the month.
Our primary students have been working hard and having fun practicing bouncing and using equipment
that strengthens eye-hand coordination. We have been working with juggling scarves, hoops and
balloons. We look forward to focusing on balance activities as well to start the month of May.
Our running club has been working hard three times a week. We are looking forward to our south
mini-fit run on May 25 and our divisional fit run on June 8. Our skipping club for students in grades 2
& 3 is also under way and will be held on Tuesdays in May during the lunch hour.
Our recess leaders have been doing an amazing job running numerous games during recess times. As
part of our healthy schools activity challenge, students have been encouraged to participate in 5
activities weekly in order to earn a reward. The leaders will be rewarded for their hard work all year
with a trip to see the Winnipeg Goldeyes on June 16.
DAYCARE CLOSURE
The Lord Roberts School Age Daycare will be CLOSED on Friday, May 27. There will be no before or after school care and no lunch available on this date.
Alternate arrangements MUST be made prior to May 27. If you wish your child to attend the LRPC Lunch Program, a registration package MUST be completed prior to May 27. Please call Erin at 204-981-0785 or drop
by the school office for a registration package.
Math Corner! Math Card Games
Math card games make math FUN & EXCITING while helping build important math skills. Helping
kids become successful math students is easier when they enjoy learning math!
Whether your child is doing addition, subtraction, multiplication or division, there are math card
games that kids will love and help improve their math skills at the same time.
Hi-Lo
Play three different versions of this game to get practice with place value, addition or subtraction.
Hi-Lo can be played as an addition, subtraction or multiplication game. Division is also possible, but
may be more difficult for younger students.
Remove all face cards from the deck and place the entire deck face down in the centre of the table.
Each player draws two cards from the top of the deck.
Addition version: The two cards are added together. The highest number takes all the cards.
Subtraction version: Players take the highest number of the two cards and then subtract the
lower numbered card. In this case, the lowest number wins all of the cards.
Multiplication version: Played the same way as the addition game, except that the two numbers are
multiplied together. In the event that two or more players have the same sum, difference or
product, those players engage in a tiebreaker, where each player draws two more cards. At that
point, the winner takes all the cards from the initial round and the tiebreaker round.
Math takes practice and at times can be hard. Playing math games takes the hard work out of
practising as well as learning new math skills.
