Faculty members from across the state pause at a tour spot for a photograph.

Lamplighters shine at conferenceState gathering offers chance at networking It’s been said that to give your best, you have to rest and recuperate every so often.

Time away from the workplace can recharge your batteries. And that is one of the ideas behind the state’s Lamplighter Conference – to give educators a chance to refresh and renew.

The Lamplighter Award is sponsored by the Chief Academic Officers Association of the Mississippi Community and Junior Colleges to honor outstanding faculty with the community college system. The honorees are selected by their peers and attend a conference held in their honor at one of the community colleges within the Mississippi.

This year’s conference, Oct. 20-22, was co-hosted by Meridian Community College and East Central Community College.

“It’s always important to recognize our outstanding faculty from each institution and this takes away from the usual conference experience that they had – geared toward teaching and learning and pedagogy and concepts,” said Dr. Teresa Houston, vice president for instruction at East Central.

“This is more about embracing them and showing them how much we value and appreciate them,” she added.

Houston said the annual event get the honorees away from campus and their normal environments. “They’re exposed to other campus environments and the opportunity to network and fellowship from across the state is invaluable,” Houston said.

Forty-three faculty members from the state’s community colleges attended the three-day event

that included tours of Meridian’s Highland Park and Denzel Carousel, the Meridian Railroad Museum, the Choctaw Museum and Tribal Government Tour in Philadelphia and dinner at Pierce Castle in Decatur.

“It was a great conference with a great group of instructors from across the state. They were so cooperative and seemed to enjoy all of the activities,” said Barbara Jones, MCC vice president for operations and chief academic officer.

She added that partnering with East Central Community College was a “joy. We could not have done with without the support that we got from our colleagues at each of our colleges. It’s all about teamwork to be successful in whatever you do,” she said.

Participants included Tolernisa Butler of Coahoma Community College; Eddie Britt and Nanette McGehee, both of Copiah-Lincoln Community College; Luke Howell, Melanie Pinter and Cathryn May, all of East Central Community College; Hari Sharma of East Mississippi Community College; Donna Ahlrich, William Alexander, Kristin Alexander, Norman Faulkner, Barbara Faulkner, all of Holmes

Community College; Jane Eastland-Foreman and Joy Rhoads, both of Hinds Community College; Holly Kirk, Cindy Layman, Donna Vaughn, and Joe Williams, all of Itawamba Community College, Danielle Brownlee, Karen Kirk and David Lowery, all of Jones Junior College; Dr. Constance Bradley and Stephanie Brown, both of Meridian Community College; Frankie Chandler, Jorene Pettiet and Christie Kisner, all of Mississippi Delta Community College; Michael Bond, Michael Loui, Christine Price and Michael Thensted, all of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College; Collin Billingsley, LaShay Blansett, Melinda Hamlin, Donna Hill, Glenice Stone and Danielle Willcoxon, all of Northeast Mississippi Community College; Temple Allen and Beth Dickerson, both of Northwest Community College; LaDona Tylson of Pearl River Community College; Dewanna Rand-Achord, Stephanie Greer and Shella Young, all of Southwest Mississippi Community College; and Lori Anderson of Pearl River Community College.
