“Wings” - Arriving at the COA in October! “Take Wing” and learn to create new life experiences...
Wings is a program designed by Elsa Bastone, Ph.D to assist an individual to take action toward a goal that is desired, but is fraught with ambivalence (wanting to, and yet not wanting to, all at the same time). Have you always wanted to de-clutter, start exercising, improve your time management or weight management skills, write poetry, take an art class, play an instrument? The list goes on... These classes will involve identifying the resistances, and learning to deal with them; so that the individual can take action, and “Take Wing” to create new life experiences.
Classes will be held: Thursdays, Oct 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th, from 1pm - 2:30pm
Reservations are required. Call the COA at 508-945-5190

Walter has had a hard life for a 13-year old. His no good floozy of a mother tends to get together with many equally despicable men. Before going on yet another husband-hunting trip, she drops Walter off at the house of his great-uncles Hub and Garth. In their youth, they would disappear for quite a while. The two are rumored to have acquired a great fortune, which Walter's mother hopes to get her hands on if he can ingratiate himself enough to the two cantankerous men. Though reluctant to put up with him at first, Hub and Garth grow to accept Walter. They begin to tell him fantastic stories of what they were up to while they went missing. When his mother returns, Walter must take charge of his own life, and decide what he's going to do with it. Rated PG by MPAA for : thematic material, language and action violence. Starring: Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, Haley Joel Osment, Nicky Katt, Kyra Sedgwick.

Can You Laminate Your Medicare Card? Because your Medicare card is one of the most important pieces of identification you own as a Medicare beneficiary, you surely wish to protect it. If you're wondering if you can laminate your Medicare card, here's some information: Can you laminate Medicare card? While not illegal, the Social Security Administration advises that you do not laminate your Medicare card. Lamination may prevent detection of security features. How to protect your Medicare card: A plastic ID card holder sleeve can be used to store and protect your Medicare card. It’s an inexpensive solution to keep your card visible, clean, and in good shape. How do I replace my Medicare card? Fortunately, if your Medicare card is lost, stolen, or destroyed, replacing your Medicare card is easy. You can call the United States Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY - 1-800-325-0778), Monday - Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or contact your local Social Security office. You can also get a replacement card by using your online my Social Security account. If you don’t have an account, you can create one on the web-site. When you’re logged in, select the "Replacement Documents" tab and then select “Mail my replacement Medicare Card.” You will receive your Medicare card in the mail within 30 days.
Plastic Card Holder Sleeves Are Now Available at the COA, Courtesy of the Friends of the COA! See the Front Desk

NEW! - The COA Podcast Club Meetings Start Tuesday October 9th
A podcast is talk radio, but on demand. It's a series of audio episodes focused on a topic or theme that you can subscribe to and listen to whenever you want.
Today, podcasts tend to be completely original content. Many escape the shackles of traditional radio formats to explore brilliantly original approaches and completely niche subjects. No matter what your interests, you will find a show that suits you.
By listening to a podcast, you use your brain in a new way, expand memory, practice empathy, and hone your discussion skills And you learn a great amount of interesting stuff and laugh a lot!
Our podcast Club allow us to sample many subjects, many ideas, many personalities, and hear some great stories! Come with your snack or beverage, relax in a comfy chair, and join the group. We will create notes and follow up on how to access your favorite shows.

Fiber: Bulking Up (Mayo Clinic - September 2018)
Dietary fiber is known for improving bowel regularity. However, higher dietary fiber intake also improves cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes and colon cancer. Recommended daily intake of fiber for people 50 and older is at least 21 grams for women and 30 grams for men.
Read nutrition fact labels; foods with 2 to 3 grams of fiber per serving are good fiber sources, but more fiber is even better. Choose breads and cereals with whole wheat or whole grain as the top ingredient.
Make substitutions; swap in whole grains such as brown rice, whole grain pasta, quinoa or barley for low fiber options such as white rice or enriched pasta. If a baked good recipe calls for white flour, use half whole wheat and half white flour instead.
Add beans; black, kidney, pinto, navy, and other types of beans and lentils are nutritional and fiber powerhouses. Use them in soups, salads, tortillas or stir-fries. Try pastas made from beans or other types of legumes.
Keep fruits, vegetables, and nuts handy; many fruits, veggies, greens, berries and unsalted nuts are good to great sources of fiber.
Mix it in; a tablespoon or two of chia seeds, ground flaxseed or wheat germ are added to hot or cold cereal, a salad, or baked goods provides a fiber and nutritional boost.
Skip the chips; try unsalted popcorn. If chips are a must, pair whole-grain tortilla chips with salsa or avocado dip.

SHINE NEWS…
MEDICARE’S OPEN ENROLLMENT IS HERE…
Don’t wait until it is too late!
The Open Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7, 2018) for Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) and Prescription Drug Plans (Part D) is here and it is very important to re-evaluate your Medicare options for 2019 during this period. Each year Medicare plans can change premiums, deductibles, co-pays and the prescription formulary (list of drugs they cover). In addition, Medicare Advantage Plans (HMOs, PPOs) often add and/or drop primary and specialty physicians, skilled nursing facilities and hospitals.
Your current plan was required to notify you by September 30th of any changes for the coming year. This letter is called the Annual Notice of Coverage (ANOC) - please make sure you review it. If you decide to stay with your current plan there is no further action required. If you don’t make a change during the Open Enrollment Period (Oct 15 - Dec 7, 2018) you may have to stay with your existing plan for another whole year. If you switch your Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) Plan during the Open Enrollment Period it will take effect January 1, 2019 (Please note - this enrollment period may not affect you if you have retiree coverage).
DO NOT WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE - Appointments Fill up Fast! Call the Senior Center at 508-945-5190 to make an appointment to meet with a SHINE Counselor, and to make arrangements to obtain the required paperwork you will need to complete for your appointment. If you are a couple, please ask for 2 appointments.

"Mundy has rescued a piece of forgotten history" says Nathalia Holt, a New York Times best selling author. Those of you who have already read "Code Girls" can certainly agree with that statement. If you have gotten to the Marconi Museum on Orleans Road here in Chatham, you will already know a good deal about these women who served in the U.S. Army and Navy during World War II, but reading about their job, their training, and the important role they played during the war makes this segment of that war's history even more real. Do pick up "Code Girls" by Liza Mundy from the "New Arrivals" shelf in our library and add to your wealth of knowledge about women and the role they played defending our country.

From The Director’s Desk…Are you caring for a loved one with dementia?
Dear Caregivers,
I’d like to invite you to participate in a series of FREE classes and become an expert in Caregiving by signing up for the SAVVY Caregiver!
Through our 2016 Community Needs Assessment respondents let us know that approximately half of you have provided caregiving in recent years to a disabled or frail person, and that doing so is challenging given your other life responsibilities. Taking care of someone with a dementia is specialized work. This FREE six week class will help you to better understand dementia, learn the skills you need to manage daily life, take control and set goals, communicate more effectively and learn to take care of yourself. Better yet, this class includes FREE RESPITE for your loved one.
These classes will be held at the Chatham Senior Center from 1-3 pm on six consecutive* Wednesdays, running October 31 through December 12. (*No class on 11/21 in honor of Thanksgiving.)
Facilitated by our community service partners at the Elder Services Family Caregiver Support Program and Alzheimer’s Family Support Center, pre-registration is required. For more information or to register please call Beth Gilmore at Elder Services of Cape Cod & the Islands at 508-394-4630, ext. 450.
I hope you’ll consider accepting my invitation to take advantage of Savvy Caregiver in Chatham!
