Hungry folks who stop in at the Sonic on U.S. 78 West and Barry Street in Oxford can be forgiven if they think they’re visiting the Hughes family kitchen.

That’s because going off to work with mother Tammy Hughes, her daughter Ashley Hughes McNeal, 24, and her other daughter, Alison Hughes Hiett, 23, means watching a trio who know how to serve up the grub.

That’s their primary job — taking the food out to waiting motorists.

In a larger sense, that means making it a good experience for whoever stops in, so really the women’s jobs are “customer sat-isfaction,” said Ashley. “We’re the ones who interact with the people.”

Other employees work hard, too, obvious-ly, but customers “just see us,” added Alison.

Sometimes that means they have to be seen fixing problems.

“If anything goes wrong we’re the ones who have to deal with it,” said Ashley.

Collectively they have about 16 years’ experience at this Sonic location, and if they’ve learned anything it’s that you can’t stereotype people based on the vehicle they drive up in. Low-budget cars can still produce good tips that augment the women’s $4-an-hour pay, they said.

Ashley signed on first, nearly eight years ago. Alison started five years ago, and mom

has been working with them about three years.

“I was kind of looking for a way to get out of the house, didn’t want 9 to 5,” Hughes explained.

They all like working for their “great” boss, Kathleen Standley.

“We’re both in school, she works with us on scheduling,” explained Alison.

Tammy, Ashley and Alison all came to be at the same Sonic in the same way people who already know each other often end up at the same business: networking.

“Whenever we needed some-

body, I would recommend my family,” said Ashley, adding that their brother, Shane, and a cousin have also worked there.

So how is it having family under the same employment roof? Well, because each daughter is married, has a child of her own and lives in a different nearby town, work is not the emotionally claustrophobic experience one might fear. And having mom there is not a problem.

“She’s really cool, she’s our best friend,” said Ashley. “We have a lot of fun.”

Moreover, as sisters, she said, they know “how to save each other” from awkward circum-stances on the job.

“They have common sense — I raised ’em already,” Hughes said.

But nothing can save them from rainy weather — that’s what they rate as the worst parts of their job.

The best part is easy. That’s all the regulars who stop in, whether just for their giant ice tea “fix” or something hot from the grill.

Said Alison, who recognizes the comforts of family: “We just know ’em.”
