THE HUNT—The Rays are seeking their 4th trip to the postseason, all com- ing in the last 6 years…if they do it, they will be one of four teams to reach the postseason four times since 2008 along with the Yankees (4), Cardinals (4) and Phillies (4)…Rays are seeking their second Wild Card entry (2011). Ê Prior to the last two days, the Rays had spent 82 consecutive days (end of play July 8–Sep 27) in position to make the postseason with- out need of a tiebreaker. Ê Rays are on a 13-5 run…they went 12-2 in the season’s final weeks last year, 14-7 in 2011, 7-7 in 2010, 11-5 in 2009 and 9-5 in 2008. SINCE SEP 12—The Rays went 13-5 (vs. BOS, MIN, TEX, BAL, NYY and TOR) yet lost 2.5 games to the Indians (15-2) and gained 2.5 games on the Rangers (10-7)…during this same period the Rangers (7-0) and Indians (14-0) combined to go 21-0 against the Astros (0-7), White Sox (0-6), Twins (0-4) and Angels (0-4). Ê The 13-5 stretch came on the heels of a 4-13 skid…either the Rays or Rangers (who had a 4-14 slump) will become the fifth team in the Wild Card era (1995–present) to overcome a 4-13 or worse slump in the final 6 weeks to make the postseason, joining the 2008 Brewers, 2000 Yankees, 2000 Mariners, 1995 Yankees. NINETY BY FOUR—The Rays and Rangers have each won 90-plus games for 4 consecutive seasons, the only teams in baseball who can make that claim…Rays also have five 90-win seasons since 2008, most in the majors. Ê The Rays are in danger of becoming the second team under the cur- rent divisional format (since 1995) to win 90-plus games in consecu- tive seasons and not make the postseason either time…the last team to do that was the 2002-03 Mariners (93, 93)…in the last 33 years it has happened only one other time: 1985-86 Yankees (97, 90). HUNGRY VETERANS—According to the Elias Sports Bureau, 18-year veteran Jamey Wright has played more seasons than any active player without appearing in a postseason game—Vernon Wells and Bruce Chen are 2nd, both in their 15th season…David DeJesus has played 1,276 regular-season games without playing in the postseason, 5th most among actives—he trails Adam Dunn (1,870), Vernon Wells (1,731), Alex Rios (1,454) and Brian Roberts (1,327)…Yunel Escobar and Wesley Wright are also trying to reach their first postseason. DEFENSIVE WIZARDRY—The Rays have committed only 59 errors on the season, 2nd fewest in the majors behind the Orioles (54)…the Orioles set a new record for fewest errors since the 162-game schedule was created (1961), and the Rays should rank 2nd behind them…the previous record was 65 by the 2003 Mariners…the Rays should see club records for fielding pct. broken at three positions: SS Yunel Escobar (.988, 1st in MLB, prev. Chris Gomez .980 in 2002), 2B Ben Zobrist (.993, 1st in AL, prev. Aki Iwamura .990 in 2008), C Jose Lobaton (.996, prev. Dioner Navarro .993 in 2008)…Zobrist passed BOS Dustin Pedroia yesterday by percentage points for the AL lead at 2B. PITCHING PROPERLY—The Rays have a club-record 17 shutouts this season, including 4 in their last 17 games…their 32 shutouts over the last two years are tied with the Dodgers for most in the majors…they are the first AL team with 15 shutouts in consecutive seasons since the 1989-90 A’s. Ê The Rays lead the AL with a .240 opp avg. …if they hold their lead over Oakland (.242) they will become the first team to lead the AL in opp avg. for 4 straight seasons since the Tigers from 1982-85. Ê The Rays have held their opponents to 5 hits or less a major league- leading 46 times—most by any AL team in 41 years…in 1972, the Angels did it 48 times and the Orioles 47 times…the next closest AL team this season is the Tigers with 31. WIL POWERWil Myers leads the team with a .298 batting avg. since the All-Star break…should the Rays advance to the Wild Card game he could become just the 5th rookie in the 2000s to lead a postseason team in hitting after the All-Star break, joining OAK Yoenis Cespedes (2012), STL Albert Pujols (2001), SEA Ichiro Suzuki (2001) and SEA Carlos Guillen (2000). EVAN & STANEvan Longoria is 8-for-15 (.533) with 6 HR, 9 RBI and 7 runs scored in the Rays final games of the regular season (4 games played)…according to the Elias Sports Bureau, Longoria is tied with STL Stan Musial for most home runs all-time in the final game of the season… this includes 3 HR in last year’s finale and 2 HR in 2011. THE ROAD IS A LONEY PLACEJames Loney leads the majors with a club-record .355 batting avg. on the road (97-for-273)…DET Miguel Cabre- ra (.331) and LAA Mike Trout (.326) rank 2nd and 3rd…the last time an AL player finished with a road avg. this high was 2006, when NYY Robinson Cano (.364) and MIN Joe Mauer (.359) both did it. Ê Loney is batting .300(37) for the season…is trying to hit .300 for the first time since batting .331 as a Dodgers rookie in 2007…he can be- come the 6th different Ray to bat .300, following Carl Crawford (5x), Jason Bartlett, Aubrey Huff, Fred McGriff and Casey Kotchman. #70 JOE MADDON, MANAGER Ê Two-time AL Manager of the Year (2008, 2011) enters his 8th season as

Rays skipper…owns a career 676-619 (.523) record with the Rays: 127-197 (.392) in his first two seasons (2006-07) and 549-422 (.567) since the start of 2008…the Rays were 518-775 (.401) prior to his arrival.

Ê Has five ejections this season and 32 as a Ray, a club record. Ê Signed a 3-year contract extension on Feb 15, 2012 that runs through

2015…at that time, he will be the longest tenured manager/head coach in Tampa Bay sports history, surpassing the Bucs’ John McKay (1976-84).

Ê A DAY IN THE LIFE—The 28-year-old has followed his 2012 AL Cy Young campaign by going 9-8 with a 3.39 ERA (177.2-IP, 67-ER) in 26 starts during his sixth season with the Rays.

Ê GET BACK—Spent 47 days (May 16-July 1) on the DL with a triceps strain he suffered on May 15 vs. BOS...prior to his injury, went 1-4 with a 5.24 ERA (55-IP, 32-ER, 65-H, 14-BB, 49-SO, 8-HR) in 9 starts...since returning from the DL, has gone 8-4 with a 2.57 ERA (122.2-IP, 35-ER, 106-H, 12-BB, 98-SO, 8-HR) in 17 starts.

Ê GETTING BETTER—His stint on the disabled list was the first of his ca-reer...during his absence (May 16-July 1), the Rays went 24-20 (.545) while the starters went 17-13 with a 4.49 ERA…since he returned on July 2, the Rays have gone 47-32 (.595), including the starters going 32-22 with a 3.33 ERA....in the 44 games during his absence, the Rays rotation had only 1 more start of 7+ IP (12) than they did of less than 5 IP (11).

Ê CARRY THAT WEIGHT—Over the last three months (since July 1), has led the majors in innings pitched (122.2) and fewest pitches per inning (13.9) and ranks 4th among AL pitchers in ERA (2.57).

Ê D.P.’S SILVER HAMMER—For the year, leads the AL with a 5.65 strike-out-to-walk ratio (147-SO, 26-BB), 4th in the majors to PHI Cliff Lee (6.94), STL Adam Wainwright (6.26) and NYM Matt Harvey (6.16)…the only left-handed pitcher in American League history to post a higher SO/BB ratio over a full season was SEA/TEX Cliff Lee in 2010 (10.28).

Ê IF WE NEEDED SOMEONE—The Rays are 10-6 when he pitches at least 7 innings and 3-7 when he doesn’t…has pitched at least 7 innings in 13 of his 17 starts after returning from the DL…has also pitched 8 or more innings more times this season (7) than he did during his Cy Young season last year (5).

Ê NO TICKETS TO RIDE—Only has 26 BB in 177.2 IP...his 1.3 BB/9 IP is the lowest among AL pitchers...since his return from the DL, has only walked 12 of his 469 batters faced (1 BB per 39.1 BF)…has twice set club records this year with streaks of 35.1 (July 19-Aug 9) and 27 in-nings (July 2-19) without a walk...has 10 starts with no walks this year, the most ever by a Rays starter in a single season (prev.
