Topic Endangered and extinct animals
Please watch this video clip showing the 100 most endangered animals (at the time of making - 2013). These were the top 100 endangered animals around the world. Endangered species are species that are at risk of extinction. They usually have a small or declining population size or a very limited range. This means factors such as habitat loss, hunting, disease or climate change could cause them to disappear. Some species are so endangered that they could disappear completely within our lifetimes. All different types of animals can be endangered – mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, plants, even insects and other invertebrates. This is a Thylacine (also known as a Tasmanian tiger) and it is an extinct species.
They went extinct in the 1930’s because they were seen as pests by farmers, so they were hunted. There are lots of different endangered species and some are more endangered than others. Scientists have created a scale which measures how endangered (or at risk) individual species are. The conservation status of a species indicates how great the risk is of that species becoming extinct in the near future.
You can watch the daily worship session from the Diocese of Portsmouth website:
http://www.casoportsmouth.org.uk/daily-worship/ It will be streamed live every day at 10:15. You can watch it later in the day if you wish.
Species at the bottom of the scale (least endangered) are less at risk of extinction than those at the top of the scale (most endangered). Think: Why are species endangered? What are the threats that cause animals to become endangered? - hunting/poaching (caught for fur or because they are seen as pests) - over-fishing (eg. tuna caught for food) - invasive species (can carry diseases that threaten native species or can become predators of native species) - pollution (can be oil, pesticide or fertiliser run off from farmland) - pet trade (people want to keep rare and exotic animals and plants in their homes) - habitat loss/deforestation (trees cut down to be used for building, or to convert the land to farmland) - Climate change (ice melting threatens polar habitats) You can also watch this video to see which animals are endangered in the Amazon rainforest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFk6GG8w-Ak Activity: Today, you will find the endangered species’ habitat locations on a world map. First, observe the first map to understand where the different countries are and then have a go at writing the animals’ names next to the right star. You will find a list of endangered animals and both of the maps at the end of this plan. Good luck!

Sacraments come from the word ‘sacred’ and bring people closer to God. Christians can celebrate 7 sacraments in their lives. These are baptism, the Eucharist (Holy Communion), confirmation, reconciliation (confession), Holy Orders, Holy matrimony (marriage) and the sacrament of anointing of the sick. Please read the following slides for each sacrament:
Unfortunately, this year we don’t have the privilege to be a part of your first Holy Communion, but we are hoping
