The 2016 Cardinal’s Appeal has begun!

We are often reminded by our Holy Father Pope Francis and Sacred Scripture that in order to love one another we must share the blessings which God has provided to us.

In Acts, Chapter 4, we learn that the early Church shared all possessions with one another so that the apostles and early Christian communities could fully proclaim “the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them.”

We are called to similarly share what is granted to us by God and return it to Him so that not one of our brothers and sisters goes without: without the gift of faith; without the essential human needs; and without a personal relationship with Our Lord. We are called to Share God’s Blessings, and when we do, we find freedom and joy in proclaiming the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus, just as the apostles did over 2,000 years ago!

A menudo nos recordamos por nuestro Santo Padre Francisco y la Sagrada Escritura que para amarse unos a otros debemos compartir las bendiciones que Dios ha provisto para nosotros.

En Hechos, capítulo 4, nos enteramos de que la Iglesia primitiva compartió todas sus posesiones entre sí por lo que él los apóstoles y comunidades cristianas totalmente podían proclamar "la resurrección del Señor Jesús, y gran favor a todos ellos se le concedió. No había entre ellos ningún necesitado ".

Estamos llamados a compartir de manera similar lo que se concede a nosotros por Dios y devolverlo a Él para que ni uno solo de nuestros hermanos y hermanas hace falta: sin el don de la fe; sin las necesidades humanas esenciales; y sin una relación personal con el Señor. ¡Estamos llamados a compartir las bendiciones de Dios, y cuando lo hacemos, nos encontramos con la libertad y la alegría en la proclamación de la resurrección del Señor Jesús, al igual que los apóstoles hicieron hace más de 2.000 años!

40 DAYS….AND TEMPTATIONS TOO

Why does Lent last 40 days? Early in Christianity, the discipline of fasting became associated with the 40 days of Christ’s fast in the desert, with Moses’ 40 days on Mount Sinai, with Elijah’s 40-day fast his journey to Mount Horeb, and the 40 years the Israelites in the desert. Moreover, penance becomes an outward and social exercise, that is, works of mercy on behalf of our brothers and sisters, especially those who are less

fortunate.

Forty days of prayers and penance will also involve temptations of Christ. The desert is where, for the first time the devil goes to Christ, both openly and directly. He tests our Lord. Maybe he wants to find out if the Messiah has actually arrived. One question is: why does Jesus allow Satan to tempt him? For our benefit,

Christ exemplifies a great humility that teaches us how to overcome temptations. And if we are not prepared, we will fall to the great enemies: discouragement and gloominess.

Jesus teaches us that no person is exempt from any type of trial. Satan exploits tempts our needs and

weaknesses. After a 40-day fast, our Lord is physically weak, in the wilderness. And Satan strikes. Turn the stones into the bread you desperately need. We must be

mindful over ourselves and over those whom we have a special obligation to help in their moments. And remember that God

is always beside us. Place all your trust in him because without him we achieve little or nothing. Remember to pray: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” (Ps26:1). Or “Our Father, who art in heaven…. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil”. During this Lenten

season, let us pray for the grace to be strong against all temptations that may lead us away from the right path. Amen.

¿Por qué la Cuaresma dura 40 días? A principios del

cristianismo, la disciplina del ayuno se asociaba a los 40 días de ayuno de Cristo en el desierto, con los 40 días de Moisés en el Monte Sinaí, con el ayuno de 40 días del viaje de Elías al Monte Horeb, y los 40 años de los israelitas en el Desierto. Por otra parte, la penitencia se

convierte en un ejercicio social, es decir, las obras de misericordia en nombre de nuestros hermanos y hermanas, especialmente aquellos que son menos afortunados.

Cuarenta días de oración y penitencia también implicarán las tentaciones de Cristo. El desierto es donde, por primera vez, el diablo va a Cristo, tanto en forma abierta y directa. Él pone a prueba nuestro Señor.

Tal vez él quiere saber si el Mesías verdaderamente ha llegado. Una pregunta es: ¿Por qué Jesús permitió que Satanás lo tentara? Por nuestro beneficio, Cristo es el ejemplo de gran humildad que nos enseña la manera de superar las tentaciones. Y si no estamos preparados, vamos a caer en las manos de grandes

enemigos: el desánimo y la tristeza.

Jesús nos enseña que ninguna persona está exenta de cualquier tipo de juicio. Satanás tienta nuestras necesidades y debilidades. Después de un ayuno de 40 días, nuestro Señor esta físicamente débil, en el desierto. Y Satanás ataca. Convierte las piedras en el pan que necesita desesperadamente. Debemos

darnos cuenta de nosotras propias necesidades y de la necesidad de los que tenemos una obligación especial de ayudar en sus momentos. Y recuerda que Dios siempre está a nuestro lado. Deposite toda su confianza

en él, porque sin él logramos poco o nada. Recuerda orar: "El Señor es mi luz y mi salvación; ¿a quién temeré? "(Salmo 26: 1). O "Padre nuestro, que estás en los cielos .... No nos dejes caer en tentación, mas líbranos del mal ". Durante este tiempo de Cuaresma, oremos por la gracia de ser fuertes contra todas las

tentaciones que nos puedan llevar lejos del camino correcto. Amén.

LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE

During the season of Lent, the Church urges the faithful to reflect a spirit of penance in their daily lives through performing acts of faith and abstinence.

FASTING requires that only one full meal be taken per day. Two other smaller meals may be taken during the day to maintain physical strength, but these two meals together should not equal a full meal in quantity. Nor is there eating between meals. Fasting obliges all those who have reached the age of 18 and continues to oblige through age 59. Those who are not specifically oblige to fast are encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able.

ABSTINENCE prohibits individuals from eating meat on a particular day. Abstinence obliges all

those who have reached the age of 14 and continues to oblige throughout their lives. Those who are not specifically oblige to abstain from eating meat are encouraged to join in the

discipline of abstaining to the extent that they are able.

ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY are days of Fast and Abstinence. FRIDAYS in Lent are days of Abstinence.

CUARESMA AYUNO Y ABSTINENCIA

Durante el tiempo de Cuaresma, la Iglesia les sugiere a los fieles a reflexionar con

espíritu de penitencia en su vida diaria por medio de la realización de actos de fe y de la abstinencia.

EL AYUNO requiere que coma una sola comida completa por el día. Se puede comer otras dos

comidas más pequeñas durante el día para mantener la fuerza física, pero estas dos comidas juntas no deben igualar una comida completa en cantidad. Tampoco hay de comer entre comidas. Se obliga el ayuno a todos los que han llegado a la edad de 18 años y continúa hasta los 59 años cumplidos. Los que no están específicamente obligados a ayunar se les anima a unirse a la disciplina del ayuno en la medida hasta donde puedan.

LA ABSTINENCIA prohíbe a los individuos de comer carne en un día particular. Se obliga a todos los que han llegado a la edad de 14 años y continúa para a lo largo de sus vidas. Los que no están específicamente obligados a abstenerse de comer carne se les anima a unirse a la

disciplina de la abstención en la medida hasta donde puedan.
