A consolidation of the balance sheets of institutions within the monetary sector, i.e. the South African Reserve Bank, the former National Finance Corporation, Corporation for Public Deposits and the so-called "pooled" funds of the former Public Debt Commissioners, the Land Bank, Postbank, private banking institutions (including the former banks, discount houses and equity building societies) andmutual building societies. Coin in circulation is included in this consolidation.

2. In circulation outside the monetary sector.3. Deposits of the private non-monetary sector with the monetary sector. Foreign deposits and government deposits are excluded.4. "Government" consists of the South African Central Government (including the former Public Debt Commissioners and the Public Investment Commissioners, but excluding Transnet, Sapos and Telkom)

and provincial administrations. All transfers to the Stabilisation Account are also included, as are deposits of the International Monetary Fund with the South African Reserve Bank arising from drawings onthe super reserve tranche or reserve tranche.
