mongol's yuan dynasty vs. japan's samurai
DESCRIPTION
The Yuan Dynasty of China was an era in which China was ruled by a foreign power, the Mongols. Despite common perceptions of what the Mongols were like, art, literature, drama, and architectural marvels were abundant during their rule. Many of China’s greatest literary works, dramatic plays, and the Forbidden City were all constructs of the Yuan Dynasty. Also, their attempted invasions of Japan brought significant changes in the Japanese society and its view of outsiders. It is important for students to having a working knowledge of how feudal Japan was organized compared to European feudalism, the role of the Samurai and the code they lived by that endured with the soldiers who fought in World War II, and unique culture that survived after the Mongol attacks.TRANSCRIPT

China when Mongols Invade
When the Mongols invade China under the leadership of
Genghis Khan they do not take all of China. They stop after taking only the northern half
and then look westward. Using a mounted army of 50,000 warriors
they move quickly… often more quickly than news of their
approach. The army moves up to 300 miles in a day!

China After Genghis Khan
Several Khans ruled after the death of Genghis Khan, but were more interested in expanding westward. Then Genghis Khans grandson, Kublai Khan took control and set his sights on the Southern Song Dynasty. In
1264, he moved the imperial capital to Beijing, or Dadu as it was known at the time.
Finally, in 1279, the Mongols successfully captured Hangzhou, the capital of Southern
Song, and took the imperial family into captivity. This began the Yuan Dynasty. It
lasted 98 years and 11 Emperors.

Medieval Japan Feudalism system similar to Medieval Europe Emperor considered divine, but Shogun ruled Samurai, the warrior class, were at the top of
social classes. Just below the samurai on the social ladder
were the farmers or Peasants. Artisans were next, considered less
important than the farmers. The bottom rung of feudal Japanese society
was occupied by Merchants, who were considered “parasites”

Samurai Legacy Even after the Samurai were gone in
“modern” Japan, Samurai code of conduct called Bushido was followed by Japanese soldiers in war – better to die than be captured or lose in battle.
Most famous were Kamikaze pilots in WWII
