INVESTIGATION
PROJECT DETAILS
Situation: My client, Elena Lie, is a music listener, gamer and movie
enthusiast. She owns many DVDs, games and music CDs but does not
have an efficient storage system.
Client: Elena Lie
Task: I am going to follow the design cycle and create a storage box that
will hold all of my client’s CDs.
Unit Question: Is storage space a problem in our day-to-day lives?
AOI: Human Ingenuity
CLIENT INTERVIEWDo you own a lot of CDs?
Yes. I’ve been keeping most of them since my childhood.
Where are you currently putting all your CDs?
I’ve been hoarding all my CDs in my closet. My flat is quite small so I
don’t have a lot of room for them. Some I just shove in storage boxes
under my bed.
How organized is your flat? Are you planning on tidying it up?
My flat’s a mess. I’m planning on throwing away some of my old CDs
but the place is just too unorganized to do anything productive.
What do you need the storage device for mostly?
I really need a storage device to hold all my favorite CDs. I have about
10 or so that I use more than others. I would like the storage device to
hold those CDs because it’s tiring scrambling around the apartment
looking for them. I need the storage to give me more accessibility to
my favorite media and also to make room for new CDs.
What color/theme would you like your storage device to be?
The colors don’t really matter to me and I don’t really care about the
theme. Aesthetics don’t matter as much to me as function.
Do you have any specific materials in mind?
As long as the material is good quality and durable, I will be fine with it.
What is a good size for you?
I don’t want anything too large. I’m only going to put my most
precious CDs there. It should be relatively light - something I can carry
easily but it doesn’t have to be so small it can fit in my handbag or
anything.
What’s the most important aspect of the product to you?
It’s important that I can insert/remove the discs easily. I want to be
able to use it efficiently and also be able to see which CDs I am taking
out. It needs to help me become more organized and it has to be
effective. I don’t want to end up with CDs scattered all over my flat
again.
Anything else?
Yes, the device should not scratch or damage my CDs.
How much are you willing to pay?
I’m willing to pay $50 at most for this product.
INTERVIEW SUMMARY
My client owns a lot of CDs but is having trouble organizing them. She
wants me to design and create a storage device that will help her store her
favorite CDs easily. She’s not too concerned about the color, design or
theme but she is more concerned about the function.
The storage device should be easy for her to insert and remove her CDs
and not scratch the covers in the process. The size should be big enough
to hold at least 10 CDs and light enough for her to carry around the house.
She also wants the product to be durable and high quality. My client is
willing to pay $50 at most for the product.

CASE STUDY
This is a sleek and minimal CD holder which has 32
grooves to insert CDs. It is made entirely of metal and
has a nice smooth, brushed metal texture. This CD
holder is made entirely from one component (a square-
cut sheet of metal) and has a nice, glossy finish. The
purpose of the product is to store CDs and this
particular CD holder can store and organize up to 32
of your favorite CDs. The aesthetics of this design is
simple yet stylish which is attractive to people who
want a simple and elegant CD holder. Its size is not as
portable as the first two but works well because it
allows the user to find and place their CDs seamlessly.
One of the unique features of this product is that it can
be mounted on a wall like a photo frame and can be
placed next to your desk or above your TV.
This is a nice, humorous design which can hold CDs in
a shelf-like way. It is made from wood and painted
over with black paint. It is made from 3 separate
components - the square, the man’s upper body and
legs. It has a nice glossy finish as well. There are no
joints in the square but its center has been cut out. This
design is ultra portable and can be moved easily. It is
ideal for those who want a minimalist design or like
quirky furniture. Its purpose is to store CDs This design
allows you to organize and hold up to 15 CDs but may
be troublesome for removing CDs that have been
stored in the middle. It is meant to be placed on a
table or desk, in front of a wall. One of the unique
features of this product is that you can store CDs of
any size.
This is a very straight forward and practical design that
can store your CDs. Its form is like a winding stairway
that is made from metal and plastic. You can adjust
the angle of the individual CD holder to tuck it in or
out.The aesthetics is nice but would probably appeal
more to males because of its compact, tough-looking
design and dark gray color. The texture of this product
is smooth with no decoration. It’s made from several
components which gives the design a shape that
allows the separate CD holders to revolve easily
around a central axis and allows the user to navigate
their CD collection. It’s purpose is store CDs and this
CD holder can hold up to 10 CDs. This product is
quite light and easy to carry but would ideally remain
stationary next to the buyer’s computer desk.
CASE SUMMARY
Case Study 1 was a sturdy and practical design that was able to store up to 10
CDs. It was a nice design but would probably take too long to create. Case
Study 2 was a funny little CD holder that could hold up to 15 CDs. It had a cute
design but its function was impractical as it would take up a lot of time to make
the little man and it would be difficult for my client to find her favorite CDs
quickly. Case Study 3 had very simple, modern and minimalist design that
could store up to 32 CDs. It was great aesthetically but also very practical. It
was a easy for my client to place in and take out her CDs and could be made
within the time limit. This case study sums up that though all three forms have
their pros and cons, the most effective one would probably be number 3
because of its aesthetics, function and ease of creation. Case Study 3 would
be ideal for my client because she wants an simple, efficient storage device
that will help her store her favorite CDs.

MATERIALS & JOINTS
Mitre joints are often used to produce the corners of picture frames and boxes. The mitre needs to be cut at a 45 degree angle, this is often used with a mitre saw that can cut at many different angles. They are relatively easy to make and look quite nice.
Finger joints are very strong. It is the only joint that is stronger is the dovetail joint. The finger joint can be difficult to make but looks very good. It has a lot of surface area to glue together. The finger joint needs a lot of precision when marking and when cutting with the fret saw. It has a nice finish and looks high quality
DESIGN BRIEF
People often don’t have enough space. They don’t have the time or money to
store their belongings and end up with a messy, unorganized home. I will
design and create a CD holder that will be not clutter my client’s space. It will
be a simple design but should be functional (easy to take the CDs in and out)
and hold as many CDs as possible. This way, the product will appeal to my
client because she needs lots of space to put all her favorite CDs as she is
more keen on performance than prettiness.

SUMMARY OF INVESTIGATION
In the investigation stage, I wrote the project brief which briefly explains the situation, task
and client. The situation is that my client (Elena) needs storage space for her CDs and my
task is to make her a CD holder. During the investigation stage, I conducted an interview
with my client and asked her many questions regarding her requirements for the CD
holder. I found out that my client wants a functional, durable and high-quality CD rack but
is not too concerned about its aesthetics. I also conducted a small case study for existing
CD holders and learnt what makes a product better than another. During this stage, I
learnt a lot about how products are put together and did a little research on materials and
joints. Afterwards, I wrote my design brief which is a short statement of what I am going to
make, why I am going to make it, and for whom I am making it for. At the end of the
investigation stage, I created the design specification table and this will tell me exactly
what the product has to do and what the design requirements are. Throughout the whole
process, I have cited all the sources I have used.

I have decided to choose design 4 because it got full marks in the evaluation against the specifications. Aesthetically, it is a nice, simple design that I think can be easily made within
the time limit. It also meets my clients requirements as it can hold up to 25 CDs and inserting and removing them is relatively easy. The design is also thin and portable thus
making it easy to carry around.

PLAN EVALUATIONWas my plan detailed, realistic, understandable? Why?
Although my plan is not particularly detailed, I do think it is realistic. I have listed the steps I will take
and included the materials and resources that will definitely be used during the process. It is not
detailed because my step-by-step was very general and unspecific. I don’t think this is a problem
though because I personally can understand my plan. I do think it is realistic because I included the
appropriate steps needed and stated resources that were available in the workshop. In a way it is
also quite understandable as well because the steps are explained simply.
Could it be followed by someone else? Why?
I don’t think my plan can be followed exactly by someone else because the plan isn’t very clear.
Since making my design is quite complex, my plan does not dictate each little step and I can’t
guarantee that all steps need to be followed or the specifics that each step needs. However, if
someone did want to follow my plan, it wouldn’t be entirely impossible. My plan is more of a basic
outline and as long as you have some imagination and background knowledge on DT, my CD holder
wouldn’t be too hard to make. The timing for each step may also vary for people depending on their
knowledge or proficiency at a certain stage.
Are the timings accurate?
I think my timings are quite accurate although they might differ when I’m actually creating the
product. It would be ideal if I could sand and smooth in twenty minutes but in actual fact, sanding
and smoothing might take a whole lesson. My timings are reasonable and realistic though.
Did my plan mention the usage of all materials and resources clearly?
I clearly mentioned all the materials and resources I know I will be using so I think I did this part
quite well. I may choose to use other equipment when making my product but I don’t know if I will
be using them so they are not listed my resources and materials.
