Where did the paw originally come from and what curse was
placed upon it? What was this curse supposed
to teach mankind?
Who brought the monkey’s paw into the world of the old
couple and their son?
At one point, Herbert alone looks into the fire and sees faces in the dancing flames. Jacobs uses the
phrase, “so horrible and so simian” in the description of this. What
ordinary words could he have used instead, and how does the
connotation of the words he did use add an element of eeriness to what
is being described?
How did young Herbert die?
Herbert’s mother awoke in the night with a wonderful
idea. What was this idea?
Why did Herbert’s father not want to open the door when he and his wife heard knocks
in the middle of the night? In fact, he was so adamant that his wife not open the door that he screamed, “Don’t let IT in!” Why?
Why “it”?
How was Herbert’s death foreshadowed?
Keep your answers to around a paragraph or two. MOST questions have more than one part. BE SURE
TO ANSWER ALL PARTS OF THE QUESTION.
