New World Monkeys New World Monkeys live in the lush jungles of Central and South America. Unlike their old
world relatives they are entirely tree-‐dwelling and are well adapted to this way of life. Many, such as howler monkeys, spider monkeys, and woolly monkeys, have semi-‐ or fully prehensile tails.
They live in trees, they like it up in the branches best. The tiny tree squirrel monkey can scamper on the smallest and thinnest branches.
In the contrast of Old World monkeys, New World monkeys have broad side ways pointing nostrils. They have a sitting pad, which is like a cushion on their behinds. This is an adaptation that
makes it comfortable
for them.

Their tails are like an extra hand.

Capuchins Capuchins (ca poo chins) are found in almost every South American forest. The Capuchin is a
new world monkey. A capuchin is a relatively small monkey. It's between 12 to 22 inches. It is very clever monkey. However, the capuchins cleverness sometimes brings it to have conflicts with humans. They steal the humans’ food. They consume vast amounts of food in a short time, which naturally makes them unpopular with humans.
Capuchin monkeys are in bands of about 30. The group communicates through barks, screams, chatters and growls. They can jump nine feet and that’s how they get from one tree to another.

Bands made up of thirty monkeys raid crops out witting farmer’s efforts to keep them out.
The yellow-‐breasted capuchin is a fairly small monkey. The fur around the face is yellow and so is its belly but the hands and feet are black. The tip of their tail is also black. The males are bigger and fatter. The yellow-‐breasted capuchin is only found in Brazil.

Old World Monkeys The monkeys of Asia and Africa are called Old World Monkeys. The Old World monkeys form
the largest and biggest group of primates. Unlike the New World monkeys their nostrils are in the middle and point down like ours. They have tails but never have prehensile tails.
Old world monkeys travel in groups but most groups only have one male and lots of females. The daughters never leave their moms. The sons leave their moms and find their own group. They are omnivores. Their diet is mostly plants and flowers but they will also eat snails and insects.
There some unusual old world monkeys. The Colobus monkey has stubs for thumbs because it helps them live in trees. The proboscis monkey has a very long nose. The snub nosed monkey hardly has a nose.

Macaque Monkeys
The Macaque monkey is a type of old world monkey. There are 23 different types of Macaque
monkeys. They live all over the world. They live in Japan, Africa, Europe, and Afghanistan and all over. This is the most common one you will find in the zoo.
The lion tailed macaque lives in India. It has dark fur but around its head is a silver white mane like a lion. It lives in the rainforest and doesn't like to be around humans. The Japanese Macaque is known as the snow monkey.

The snow monkey can survive in Japanese winters because they spend their time relaxing in hot springs. It is very smart and it’s the only animal besides raccoons and humans that wash their food before eating.

Snow Monkeys roll snow into balls for fun.
Baby monkeys
A baby gibbon monkey spends its first few years holding on to her mother. It must hold on tight because their mother moves fast and it’s a long way down to the jungle floor. A baby monkey holds onto their mother but a baby Marmoset holds on to their father.
A baby spider monkey has trouble getting across gaps between trees so a mother stretches her arms across like a bridge so the baby spider monkey can cross.
When monkeys are born it is a different color then their parents but when there 6 months old they change colors to match their
parents. This is called camouflage.
