Dear Monmia Families,
GREAT THINGS I NOTICED DURING THE PAST WEEK
1. Prep B visiting me in my office on Friday with Mika and Noah taking turns in the principal
chair! It was lovely having such excited visitors.
2. Completing the School Strategic Plan which was ratified by School Council on Monday.
Congratulations to Vineta for leading this project and to the leadership team and staff for their
contributions.
3. Congratulations to all teachers for completing their assessment schedules ready to have the
crucial data discussions.
4. It is so heart-warming to have children running into school in the mornings with huge smiles on
their faces. I feel so special when children give me hugs because it makes me recognise that
they feel safe and happy in our school and that is not just down to me but all of us in our
community. Thank you especially to Isabella (Prep) and Taylan (Year 4) who are spoiling me
with hugs at the moment!
5. It was lovely to watch Jessica, Eve, Juliette and Kira playing school (with Jessica being the
teacher at recess on Wednesday. They all received a sticker and bucket filler
acknowledgement. 6. Thank you to Keely, Natalia, Ella and Imana who were busily shovelling the sand back into the
sand pit to keep it tidy and clean. They were great bucket fillers! We love receiving feedback from our school community so that we can continue to improve and flourish. School Councillors on Monday provided us with positive feedback on the start of the year and also constructive feedback that we can work on straight away. This being that with the new names of the classes parents/guardians were not sure which teacher belonged to the A, B or C etc. So I hope the following information is helpful.
Prep PLC Mandy Peters (TaLL) Prep A Genevieve Vidmajer Prep B
Year 1/2 PLC Joanne Mavrikos (TaLL) 1/2C Rene Bernardo 1/2D Leanne Molony 1/2B Karen Slatterie 1/2A

Wishing all our families who celebrate Chinese New Year 恭禧發財 Gong Hey Fat Choy! a very
Happy New Year on Thursday 19 February!
This is the biggest event on the Chinese calendar and this year sees the Goat come into power, bringing with
it two weeks of celebration and festivities across the globe. The goat is the eighth sign of the twelve Chinese
Zodiac animals and is known to be creative, dependable and intelligent, making them very charming to be
with. Chinese New Year has its own traditions with each of the fifteen days of festivities having specific
meaning and customs, starting with New Year’s Eve and culminating two weeks later with a Lantern Festival.
Feasting, firecrackers and the awakening of the dragon are just some of the traditional
festivities on offer in Melbourne this Lunar New Year. Traditional and contemporary Chinese culture will be
celebrated as people across the city welcome the Year of the Goat. As well as celebrations and parties
around the city – and across Victoria – this Lunar New Year also promises a start to more prosperous times.
TWIGHLIGHT PICNIC
It was wonderful to see so many of our families attend our annual picnic. I was so pleased to have the
opportunity to speak to many parents/guardians and grandparents. Even with the sun only peeking out
every so often we still managed to entertain the children who were happily playing on the oval and
playgrounds. Thank you to the parents/guardians who spoke so positively about how they looked forward to
the picnic each year and gave me such positive feedback about our school and the opportunity to talk to
other parents/guardians and the staff. Thank you all for coming. Thank you to Lucy Vorpasso and Vineta
Mitrevski for ensuring the event was such a success. Thank you to all the helpers who put up the balloons
and staff who helped put things away at the end of the evening. As always, please let us know what you
thought about the picnic and any ideas on how we can continue to improve it.
Warm Regards,
Lorraine Bell Principal

Monmia Primary School Council Elections 2015
What is a school council and what does it do? All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within statewide guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students. Who is on the school council? For most school councils, there are three possible categories of membership:
A mandated elected Parent category - more than one-third of the total members must be from this category. Department of Education and Training (DET) employees can be Parent members at their child's school as long as they are not engaged in work at the school.
A mandated elected DET employee category - members of this category may make up no more than one-third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.
An optional Community member category - members are coopted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be Community members.
Generally, the term of office for all members is two years. The term of office of half the members expires each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections. Why is Parent membership so important? Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school. Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging. How can you become involved? The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term i each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant. In view of this, you might seriously consider
standing for election as a member of the school council
encouraging another person to stand for election. Do I need special experience to be on school council? No. What you do need is an interest in your child's school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school's future. What do you need to do to stand for election? The principal will issue a Notice of Election and Call for Nominations following the commencement of Term i each year. All school council elections must be completed by the end of March unless the usual time line has been varied by the Minister. If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can nominate yourself in the Parent category. DET employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not engaged in work are eligible to nominate for parent membership of the school council at that school. Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal within the time stated on the Notice of Election. You will receive a Nomination Form Receipt in the mail following the receipt of your completed nomination. Generally, if there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted during the two weeks after the call for nominations has closed. Remember
Ask at the school for help if you would like to stand for election and are not sure what to do
Consider standing for election to council this year
Be sure to vote in the elections. Contact Lorraine Bell for further information.

There are 3 vacancies in the parent section of school council. Three are retiring members who are due to finish in March 2015-Mary Papaioannou, Chantelle Polacsek and Satish Shettigara. Two vacancies are community members-Amanda Spiteri and Beverley Vanderputt. Julie Chitsos is also due to finish her term as she no longer has a child at the school. Julie’s term finishes on March 2016 so this creates a casual vacancy. We also have three staff vacancies-Vineta Mitrevski, Lucy Vorpasso and Kathryn Buttigieg. These parents and staff have all made very significant and valued contributions to Monmia School Council by providing important viewpoints and skills which have assisted the school to grow and develop. We sincerely thank them for their endeavours. If you are a new parent or a parent who is thinking about joining council please contact me for further information. If you would like to work in partnership with others to shape the school’s future directions I encourage you to complete and return a nomination form. Nomination forms can be collected from the general office. Nominations close 4pm on Thursday 26 February 2015.

SPOTLIGHT ON BOUNCE BACK
A WELLBEING AND RESILIENCE PROGRAM
THE FOCUS FOR THIS WEEK IS:
Values that underpin Bounce Back ! ACCEPTANCE
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This week, I would like to continue with the Core Values that underpin the Bounce Back Wellbeing and Resilience Program. This week we will look at ACCEPTANCE which is a Bounce Back value as well as one of Monmia’s community values.
Everybody is different. There is no other person that is exactly the same as you! Even dentical twins have differences. Whilst identical twins may look exactly the same, they do not always think the same, act the same or feel the same. Yes, everyone is different. Being different to someone else in the way you look, think or feel does not make you any better than that person or any less important either. It just means that we are all special in different ways.
Everyone has similarities and everyone has differences and that is okay! When you feel okay about differences in people, then you get to know people who are different, you include them in your games and conversations, you don’t tease or exclude them. When you accept people who are different you understand that everyone is different and that is a good thing and a very necessary part of our community. When you enjoy and learn about other people’s differences you grow to appreciate other people’s backgrounds and appreciate your very own background as well. You also learn how to accept the differences you may not like but don’t interfere with your friendship.
Whilst there are many differences that exist between individuals, there are also many similarities that we share and that it is equally important to recognise and celebrate our similarities.
Accepting and respecting similarities and differences are important beliefs to have in ensuring that Monmia Primary School creates a warm and positive school community.
FAMILY ACTIVITY: As a family, discuss the similarities and differences that exist between each of your family members. Discuss physical appearances, personalities, likes, dislikes, strengths and opinions on topics. Reinforce that everyone is special in some way. I hope you have found this article interesting and useful and I look forward to any feedback you might like to share with me.
Warm Regards,
Lucy Vorpasso
Assistant Principal - Student Engagement and Wellbeing
It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those
differences.

Thank you to all the families, students &

Monmia KidsMatter Twighlight Picnic such a
great success!
Student Engagement and Wellbeing
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I I am sure you will join with me in saying ‘WE ARE FILLING LOTS OF BUCKETS AT MONMIA PRIMARY SCHOOL! We have all noticed how excited our students are about the Bucket Filling Philosophy and how they are being proactive in writing ‘drops’ for others. I think Bucket Filling is catching on at Monmia Primary School!
This week I would to share important information about Bucket Filling. WHAT DOES BUCKET FILLING LOOK LIKE?
actions or words that you care about someone saying or doing something nice helping without being asked giving sincere compliments showing respect to others apologising having a ‘Glass Half Full’ mindset and respond in that manner. show empathy to other people being an active bystander when someone is being hurt by trying to help in some way
WHAT DOES BUCKET DIPPING LOOK LIKE?
making fun of someone saying or doing unkind things refusing to help failing to show respect or being intentionally disrespectful ignoring bullying
When we unintentionally dip into another’s bucket with a thoughtless word or careless action, we must repair the relationship with a quick and sincere apology. THE IMPORTANCE OF PROTECTING YOUR LID
Your lid helps you to protect the good thoughts and feelings you have collected. When you use your lid, you stop and think through a situation even though it may be hurtful or
embarrassing. When you stop and think though situations, you develop necessary resilience to work though
life’s challenges. You are using your lid the moment you stop, think and visualise a person’s empty bucket and
understand why he or she is dipping.
Happy Bucket Filling!
Kind Regards,
Lucy Vorpasso

I hope your child is able to tell you lots of amazing things about how they have settled in to school and the type of start they have had in 2015. Here are some of the comments I was able to capture from students as they left our school at the end of the day. “ I really enjoyed my day because I got to find out how I can improve on my reading.”
“I got to learn more about our school values such as being caring. Being caring is easy.”
“I like my teacher because she just wants us to do our best.”
“I wish I could stay at school longer but Mrs M is waiting at the gate for us all to leave so she can lock it.”
“We are learning to know what to do when we make a mistake.”
“ I like school so much. I want to be at school always.”
“The sausage sizzle was the best and they were free.”
“ I feel safe at school and am really, really happy.”
“ I like learning at school with my class.”
“I smile at school every day! It’s is great.” I look forward to hearing further feedback from you when I am out in the yard.

School Improvement
Monmia Primary School values the assistance of helpers within the classroom to provide support during the delivery of our
Literacy and Numeracy programs. Each year a training program is conducted which aims to equip
parents/carers with the necessary prompts and questions to support students in their Literacy and
Numeracy learning within the classroom setting.
This year the training session for the Classroom Helpers Program will be conducted on Monday 16th
March, beginning at 9:30 and finishing prior to recess at 11:00am.
As part of the training we will be discussing the types of activities that may be part of the program, the
procedures involved when assisting in the classroom as well as relevant questioning prompts which
support students and encourage them to think about and extend their strategies in Literacy and
Numeracy.
If you would like to be involved in providing classroom support it is essential that you attend this
training session. Those who do not attend the Classroom Helpers training session can support a
classroom teacher for administrative tasks only (making resources).
It is expected that parents/carers who complete the program will commit to working in the classroom
as a helper in our Literacy and Numeracy sessions.
The session will be facilitated by our school based Literacy and Numeracy coaches, Natalie Creasey
and Dean Squires.
If you would like to attend the Classroom Helpers training program please complete
the slip below and return to school as soon as possible.
Regards
Natalie Creasey and Dean Squires
